Liverpool boss Benitez rejected £65M Real Madrid offer for Torres
14.07.09 | tribalfootball.com

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez rejected a major offer from Real Madrid for striker Fernando Torres.

Benitez put a stop to Real Madrid's incredible spending spree - by rejecting a massive £65million bid for Anfield idol Torres, says the People.

Madrid swooped for Torres AFTER sealing deals for £80m Cristiano Ronaldo and £56m Kaka. It was an astonishing move from the Spaniards, given that Torres made his name at their bitter rivals Atletico Madrid and is as important to Liverpool as skipper Steven Gerrard.

But Bernabeu president Florentino Perez reckoned the cash-strapped Merseysiders would be vulnerable to a big-money raid and agreed the offer for Spain's No.1 striker.

what so we're signing seven players then? :D
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

WORD ON THE BOULEVARD: Real Madrid are closer to signing Xabi Alonso with the Liverpool midfielder ready to submit a transfer request, say the Spanish. The Reds are allegedly lining up Lorik Cana as a cheap replacement, while Real will swoop for Joao Moutinho if Alonso stays. Or not. Who knows what to believe coming out of Spain?

SPAIN: Marca have come up with the interesting proposal that Liverpool will sign Marseille's out-of-contract midfielder Lorik Cana if Xabi Alonso leaves for Real Madrid. Cana is set to move to Hamburg but would prefer an English club and talked of Everton as being an option. The Albania man, 25, is really quite good and it is surprising that big clubs have not gone for him already.

Madrid, meanwhile, are lining up a £19m bid for Sporting's Joao Moutinho, in case the Alonso deal falls through. This has been mentioned before, but with Gaetano D'Agostino set to sign seems unlikely. Villarreal winger Santi Cazorla is also being mentioned as an option, which is realistic as he would be happy back-up to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Arjen Robben.

Roma brace for Liverpool offer for Aquilani

Cash-strapped Roma are bracing themselves for a bid from Liverpool for star midfielder Alberto Aquilani.

La Repubblica says Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez sees Aquilani as an ideal replacement for want-away midfield schemer Xabi Alonso.

Roma officials are convinced Liverpool will make their offer either tomorrow or Thursday and know they have little room to maneuver given the club's cashflow problems.

An offer in the region of £18 million from Liverpool will be enough to land Aquilani. :D
