How much have we really spent? - And what does it mean?

Net Spend 04 - 09 Purchased    Sold            Nett         Per Season

1 Manchester City £171,020,000 £49,900,000 £121,120,000 £24,224,000
2 Chelsea £248,450,000 £117,300,000 £131,150,000 £26,230,000
3 Liverpool £212,490,000 £102,030,000 £110,460,000 £22,092,000
4 Manchester United £176,450,000 £76,050,000 £100,400,000 £20,080,000

If you look at this table, you'll see that since Rafa has been the manager, we have spent 212 million quid. Chelsea have spent 248 million quid, and Manchester United have spent 176 million quid.

The net spend per season is Chelsea 26 million quid, Liverpool 22 million, and Manchester United 20 million.

How the respective managers have chosen to use those funds has been up to them. That Rafa tried to have a massive squad so he could go on his rotatathon is his fault and nobody elses. That we bought countless 'options" and "possibilities" is something we are paying for with the team even today.

Whichever way you look at it though, the numbers, the FACTS, do not support your idea that we have been unable to compete in the transfer market.

Are you ignoring what im saying mick ? how many players has that money bought for man utd thou and how many players has it bought for us ? ffs chelsea spent over a hundred million in one season then spent the same again the next season then spent nearly 60 million the season after then stop spending cause they had bought loads of decent players with the bags of money they had . Man utd buy a 30 mil pound player every season or some to add to theor already top quality squad . WHEREAS WE HAD TO SPREAD THE MONEY TO BUILD A SQUAD UP FROM THE GROUND BAR A COUPLE OF PLAYERS . Do you really think we could go for the same players that man utd and chelsea have ? do you really think we could of gone into bidding wars with them ? we have done twice and lost on both accounts cause they out bid us - man utd for vidic and chelsea for malouda .

Sorry mick but Rafa is being offered a new contract so as much as people want him out it looks like he wants to stay and the owners want him to stay so i hope and i really do hope that when he is here next season that people support him . we all know there is some gaps , we all know there is some areas that need improving , we all know some signings didnt work but most of us also know that rafa hasnt been able to shop in the same places as other teams due to the fact while he has spent money there is only the odd few times he has been able to get a top player for top dollar - other times he has had to spread that money out over a number of players who werent world class - and he has had to do that to try and strengthen the squad to compete on more than one front . Its not like he has had the spending power off the mancs in terms of 30 mil for this player and 30 mil for that player . everyone has seen that . while we went and bought kuyt for 10 mil chelsea bought schev for 30 mil and drogba for 20 odd miland the mancs went and got rooney for 30 mil berbatov for 30 mil and tevez for a possible 30 mil . the mancs and chelsea havent had to thinly spread the money to buy a squad - we have .

I think the word missing from your post mate is CHOSEN e.g.  "other times he has CHOSEN to spread that money out over a number of players who werent world class."

First season we won the CL, so we obviously had a reasonable team, maybe he should have just spent his money on one or two top quality additions rather than trying to spread his money too thinly and finishing up with players no better than the ones he was shunting out the door?

Second season we won the FA CUP and recorded our highest points total in the prem........ again how bad could we have really been ?

Third season he again spreads his money too thinly, instead of buying the top quality right midfielder THAT EVERYONE knew we needed he brings in another load of players that are no improvement on what we were losing.

ETC ETC ETC

If he gets another £60million to spend this season, whats the betting he buys 6 or 7 average players rather than on two  top class players ?

If for example he hadn't wasted £7.5million on Pennant, £11.5million on Babel maybe we could have afforded a decent winger with £19million?

We have "the best midfield in the world" (Alonso, Sissoko, Gerrard and Masch) so he spends £5million (rising to £8million) on Lucas rather than trying to address some of our shortcomings?

I could go on, but whats the point, those who understand what I mean don't need to read it for the 100th time, and those that don't want to understand what I mean NEVER WILL.

Chosen or had no choice cause the players he had at the time werent good enough so he had to try and improve on them and there is no doubt the squad is stronger so he has improved on them - and you say he could of not signed pennant and babel and got someone else - well they were bought in different years saint . as for sissoko he was going to be back up to the other three - he didnt want that and wanted to leave - same with crouch . If both of those players wanted to stay and be back up then they wouldnt of been sold and we wouldnt of had to buy replacements - but they wanted to go both of them .

1st season - That team was poor - was poor in the league and performed miracles in thr CL to win
2nd season - Won the FA Cup and could do a bit better in the league due to going out of CL early yet were still miles of chelsea and even behind a poor man utd team that year
3rd season - was doing well in both CL and league but had to sacrafice the league to enable us to do keep doing well in the cl as we didnt have the squad to compete on both fronts.
4th season - same as the season before but this time we compete a bit better on both fronts due to the arrival of torres .
5th season - once again another improvement - doing far better in the league and still got a chance to win the thing as well as still in with a great shout of the cl .

If he had that sort of money like Utd and Chelsea he could have got Simao and Alves first time instead of going for other cheaper options. And those were only under 15Mil as well. Jeez I still cant believe people actually think Rafa has spent on par with the other top teams.

:D There does come a point S@int where you may as well just accept that people are going to differ. We spent 40 million quid this Summer and improved the first team to the tune of Albert Riera, who replaced a striker who we paid 11 million quid for who we had been playing out of position at left midfield.

40 million quid for Albert Riera? But we can't shop in the same places as the other teams    fecking hell.

TIP TO PRO'S- Why not steer the argument onto potential money we could acrue if we had to sell some players. Players such as agger, Skyrtel, Torres, Riera to an extent, Aurelio, Reina, Alonso, Arbeloa have a transfer  value today which exceeds what they were bought for. Why not talk about that? At least it would be possible to put together a sensible arguement on it anyway.

I'm even trying to help em out here.

It's true the bit of reiterating, because it's more than twice I've read something similar from you.

A "massive disaster" sounds pretty bad, so I would like you to explain a bit how is that. That is, do you see decay? do you see that under Rafa we'd go to massive disaster? how would be that disaster?

I'd like to know what massive disaster means, because I certainly don't see the club in a worse football position now than when Rafa came. So nothing in my eyes leads to a massive disaster when it comes to football.

That is, fair enough to read that sentence, but some explanation would be appreciated. I'm not very good at predicting future.

Lies, damn lies and statistics! Whatever guys look at the squad there are far too many mediocre players - it is undeniable. Shouldn't a manager be able to spot emerging talent also? If it was all about buying the most expensive players to be successful then we should have an accountant run the club rather than a football man.

We won the CL and got to the LC FINAL in his first season with the players that wernt good enough. We won the FA CUP and achieved our highest points total in his second season with players that wern't good enough, since then we have won nothing and failed miserably to mount any sort of challenge in the League. Maybe we should go back to having players that arn't good enough.......... at least we won things with them!

things like NEVER buying a decent right winger.

he had the choice, and chose to spread his money
