Pfffft - I may comment later after work.

But deary me - a front 3 of Kuyt, Babel and El Zhar. Oh no.

I guess the match thread is exploding :D

Potentially 10points behind the Mancs!

And I think from here we will struggle to even get the same amount of points as them. This could get real ugly if we are thumped at Old Twatford and potentially be 13+ points behind.

That ain't progress no matter how you see it!

Looking at the bigger picture. Have we progressed in terms of the quality and style of football we play? I don't know about the rest of you but sitting back when we go 1-0 in front and let the opposition come at you does not make enjoyable viewing for me.

How many young players have come through the ranks? Last season the ressies won the league but this season they are having a bit of a nightmare. How many of the Youth Cup winning team a couple of years ago will make it?

How many players have improved since we signed them?

Has the scouting system improved? Judging by the number of bad buys that are recognised as such and subsequently shipped out (or still at the club) then it would suggest that the scouting system is still not what it should be. To me this is such an essential factor in any club's success so if your scouting system is poor then you will struggle.

Let's hope that some of the latest batch of youngsters make it - Nemeth, Paceco, Simon, Dalla Valle, Huth, Spearing, Darby, Kelly - to name a few. Then we can say that the scouting has improved. If none of them make it then we can say that either the scouting system is still poor or the coaching when we get the players is poor - which brings us back to the original question.

Does the manager get the best out of his squad? Sure enough he seems to get his act together for the one-off European Cup matches but, let's face it, it's not uncommon for him to be out-smarted or matched by whoever is managing Fulham, West Ham, Stoke, Middlesbrough, Birmingham, Wigan and others.

So it would seem, progress has been made in some areas - Europe in particular but in other areas there are still some question marks.

Personally I don't think Benitez has improved his understanding of the Premiership. How do we draw against City, beat Real Madrid who have been brilliant since Ramos took over and then lose to Boro. It is laughable in the extreme and to think Benitez is being offered a contact that is worth £25m over 5 years - I really am beginning to think that he should leave along with Parry. I have said before that he was incredibly lucky to win the CL in 2005 against Milan. God knows what would have happened if that pathetic sick note Kewell hadn't thrown the towel in as soon as he felt a slight twinge and Steve Finnan's injury making way for Didi?

Benitez's buying record apart from possibly four players has been awful.

I have said all season that we have no strength in depth and I now believe that more than ever. IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE!

I for one dont see much progress aswell fair enough we are really brill in the champ league but comparing it to our domestic league it puts that form in shame... There are alot of similarities with houllier regime and rafas.. We are slowy bridging the gap with the top teams in prem but its been a slow and long process.. IF we continue like this id say we could win the title within the next 5-8 years.. Cant wait that long

Just Deserts....that is probably what we have got this season. We was up there for a good slice of the season but it's fair to say most of us were wondering how for much of it. Late goals and unlikely comebacks, winning ugly, winning games we had no right to win and of course, beating our top four rivals for the first time in years (don't think this gets as much credit as it deserves some of the time). All this without our only quality striker and (for much of the season) our charismatic Captain. Get them back, play a little more aggressively and surely it's there for us to win it??? Tbh I never really thought we was gonna do it but I reckon that's 18 years of conditioning as much as anything else. Truth is our owners up to it, our Manager hasn't been up to it, and our players aren't up to it either. Not really sure where i sit at the moment, hate all this pro and anti shi.....t on these boards. I've lost a lot of faith in the manager BUT I can't fuc......kin stand the cu.....nts in charge and I wouldn't trust either of them to bring in and fund a new manager should they go down that route. THEY WOULD F>>>UCK IT UP AND NO MATTER WHAT YOU THINK OF RAFA DON'T TRUST THESE WAN.....KERS TO MAKE THE RIGHT CALL EVER. Not sure what that makes me, pro or anti? i'm so fu....c....kin drunck i hate being such a slave to the game...it's sucks as....s   :(

Mate you just summed up how most of us feel here.. The picture is more bigger than rafa and the players.. For me main factor is the fecking owners.. Huge problem with us at the moment.. Really regret the DIC refusal...

I think that is letting Rafa off the hook a bit dude, no doubt he's had an opportunity here this season and we've not taken it. Course, we might still go on and do some damage (again) in Europe but we had a real chance on the home-front and we blew it BUT I would still urge anyone who wants the manager out to hold fire, sit tight and see how things pan out on the ownership front coz these two clueless pr....icks don't give a flying fu....c...k about our club, don't have a fu....ck....in chance of keeping hold of it (thank fu...ck!) and need to go BEFORE ANYONE ELSE.

This may not go here but it's a random thought, another thing that is going against Rafa atm are the players.  I think some are slightly turning on him as he has driven the season into the ground.  DISCLAIMER I'm not putting it all on him but unfortunately when these things happens it falls on the manager.  If he loses more and more players in the dressing room he may decide to walk.

I honestly don't think Gerrard and Carra are at all happy about what has constantly gone on with ownership and Rafa over the past few years and on top of that the way we have thrown away the prem, Keane being sold with no replacement leading to a very weak squad etc etc..  These things do not go unnoticed with the players.  I think it would mean a hell of a lot to everyone involved if Gerrard backed Rafa throughout all of this but he hasn't to me that is bad leadership on his part.

I say being second and 10 points off is only important relative to who is first. Look at the money, players and stability that Man U. have. Does that not explain any of the 10 points difference??
I actually think Liverpool (with the help of Rafa) have been outperforming for years. Can anyone really say we have a better set of players than Chelsea or Man U.??

Hashman, we were top of the ladder only a few weeks ago.

We were still that "unstable" club that we are today, with the same owners and we were first! The Mwancs were the same "stable" club they are today and were 7pts behind!

Im sorry mate but ur clutching at straws with the way ur trying to defend the indefensible. The reason why we arent first ISNT just because of this so called "unstability".

It has largely to do with the manager as well!
