maybe at that point the Keane sale wasn;t on the table and therefore no replacement was needed. It was too late once the Keane deal was coming together cos Heskey had gone to Aston villa.

Anyway if we need a back up striker, i.e. not one to play alonside torres, but as his understudy Heskey sint the man for the job becasue he doesnt score enough.

Stop worrying about all this now anyway everyones had their say just back the boys redgarless of allegencies with the manager / board.

Parry's been very busy lately and had probably used up his £10 annual phone credit.

I can't speak for the rest, but it is VERY clear to me that we will be using 4-5-1 formation from now on, and rightly so bcos it is how we are most effective.

So if we are looking for a cover for Torres, then Keane and Heskey are NOT what we need bcos they are not effective as a lone-striker..and don't score enough. I would argue that Babel, though not entirely tried and tested as a striker, is somewhat of a viable option, arguably even better than Keane (as a lone striker). I may get attacked for this, but even N'gog, though even more untried and untested, is "in the mold" of Torres.. tall, powerful and handsome

For some very very strange reasons, I do have high hopes for N'gog to slowly come thru.

Ideally, I would prefer someone like Rooney or Owen to backup Torres.. but it is never ideal and we have to now make do with what we have.

Honestly, I am not sure if anyone of you (like me) who sees a more pressing situation in Gerrard's second striker role? I really can't see any decent backup there except possibly benanyoun, who is also really stretching a bit too far! I would argue that Keane will be more missed here as a backup than the lone striker department.

I think we are left with absolutely NO margin for error now.. bcos our 2 superstars simply MUST stay fit for the rest of the season. Every match will be like walking on minefield from now on.

I think the 4-5-1 only works because of the quality of Gerrard and Torres, if either needs a rest or is injured I think we will have to revert to 4-4-2 and just keep our fingers crossed.

On paper yes.. But Rafa has shown time and again this season that 4-5-1 is his preferred formation by a long long mile, with Gerrard so far playing as a 2nd striker in almost EVERY match - even when Torres was injured.

Anyway, we are so severely stretched in the striking department, it will be an equally huge challenge to get 2 strikers for a decent partnership in a 4-4-2!

Jesus have some faith in NGog we have only seen him play like twice. We have seen Voronin play plenty of times and he is :censored:

I mean't to say in addition to Ngog. If Voronin was called back, at least this would give Rafa other options.

To be honest if he is here then he is a possibility and Rafa played him far too much that season. Id rather he not even be here so there is no chance of seeing him play. :laugh:

I know that sounds silly that we are cutting down our options but im glad in a way that we will be forced to blood younger players like NGog into the team.

The other problem Keane's absence gives us is really we should be seeing Kuyt just used as a striker now perhaps.
If that is the case who does he play on the right? Benayoun and El Zhar are options but they don't play regularly especially the latter.
Stevie G hasn't played there much at all this season.

Really Torres and Kuyt are now our only recognised 'experienced' strikers.

Do you not think though that 4-4-2 is our best option?

If Gerrard plays in central midfield he is still more than capable of getting forward and scoring, Alonso, Masch and Lucas don't carry the same threat at all.

At least then if you say play Torres/Kuyt or Torres/Babel up front you have a better chance of a goal from midfield too.

You could even play Benayoun just behind Torres - he played there for West Ham *realise this is pushing the boundaries a little too far perhaps*

I think Benayoun is a much better option then Kuyt on the right. He gets lost in some games but if he can come into a game, make a difference instantly (basically an anti-argument for babel needs to start consecutive games) while playing a bench role most of the season he should be looked into. Imagine if he can keep that form all season, would just need Riera to get back to his form. And El Zhar on the right hasn't been bad this season, no reason to doubt him yet.

However, there is reason to doubt Kuyt up top
