SAMI TO STAY AT ANFIELD
Hyypia is lined up for coaching role

By CHRIS BASCOMBE, 17/01/2009
SAMI HYYPIA has been earmarked for an Anfield player-coach role at the end of the season.

His contract ends in July and he is a target for several Premier League clubs but Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez wants Hyypia to remain in his plans on and off the pitch.

Benitez sees the 35-year-old as the ideal role model to younger players.

Hyypia’s Euro limbo is also set to be ended with a recall to Liverpool’s 25-man Champions League squad — but Benitez will have to axe Philipp Degen or Andrea Dossena to make room.

I thought amidst all the doom and gloom of the mancs overtaking us in the league we could all do with a little good news. I think its a great move both for Liverpool and a good reward for long and distinguished service by Sami.

Makes you wonder about the Agger situation, if Sami is being brought into the CL SQUAD. Then again with the way Dossena has been playing maybe not.

Who wuld have thought a 35 year old defender and a player that was surplus to requirement in the summer would have been our two best players this season Sammi and Xabi Buttrock it is  :buttrock

:censored:, we'd have to drop Degen?  Thats a tough choice

Excellent news.  Sami's been majesterial for us down the years and he's been immense so far this season.  He'll be a huge positive influence on young defenders. :nod

Still good enough to play another season at least IMO... I don't think there are many defenders who are better than him in winning aerial battles..

Beleive it when  I see it.

Bascombe now writes sensationalist bullsh.it for hte Sunday Sun.

This is a strangely themed story that doesnt follow his apparent Anti-LFC stance since joining the NOTW.

Oh shame, Degen was doing so well not being fit for Europe!

I hope Sami ends his playing career on a high, one of the best CBs not to have a Premiership winners medal. I must admit I wondered if he'd play enough to get one, he would now (IF we win the title that is) as would all the CBs.

CB* Appearances 08/09

Carragher : P29 W18 D10 L1 (Conceded 18, Clean Sheets 15)
Agger : P17 W10 D5 L2 (Conceded 14, Clean Sheets 8)
Hyypia : P15 W11 D3 L1 (Conceded 12, Clean Sheets 8)
Skrtel : P10 W7 D3 L0 (Conceded 7, Clean Sheets 4)

*as in our CB options, not necessarily playing CB

Carra has played in all six of our 0-0s this season. Interesting Hyypia has played in the highest percentage of winning games while Agger has played in the lowest. Skrtel has yet to taste defeat this season, Agger played in both defeats.
