I'm not sure you are right on this one Mick, and I think Stu may be wrong. Lucas played well on quite a few occasions last season, and since being booed has played well in his last three appearances, with today obviously being the highlight. I think he has everything needed to go forward from this game and build himself a career at Liverpool. Remember he is competing for a place with 3 of the best midfielders in the country, so he's not being picked because we are short of a decent midfielder.

I still think he needs to show more confidence in his own ability, but if he does I think he could be with us for a good few years to come.

Agreed mate.

To me, the lad always looked like he had the tools to be a success at LFC. He's still a little too lightweight for my liking but if he can start to believe in his own capabilities, he's possibly got what it takes.

As you said, it can't be easy being behind the 3 of the best central midfielders in the world let alone the country. Can be very intimidating I'd imagine.

Agreed mate, good point about him being behind 3 of the best midfielders in the world, most players would pale in comparison but he didnt look out of place today.
And TBF to the lad he put in good performances last season, in big games too like against chelsea and inter plus he had a good run at the end of last season when our big players were being saved for CL, scoring and setting up a few while getting the chance to play closer to the Gerrard role.
The player who plays for Brazil is a confident forward thinking player, I think we are starting to see this now. Its also interesting to note that since he took a bit of lip it seems Rafa has given him licence to play his natual game, coming in for SG against PSV.
Dont judge a book by the cover, unless you cover just another, because blind exceptance is a sign,

Lucas sort of reminds me of Guti.  He does not dominate matches so well yet but he can put in some excellent through balls and he's great at getting into the opposition's box unnoticed.  He has been playing really well in the last few matches but I would just like to see him shoot more often.

He played quite well against Arsenal as well. To be fair he has been decent the last few games he has played, probably since the game he got booed when he came on for Keane. It's a good thing as well. Not that im trying to stir things up by suggesting Xabi is on his way but IF something did happen (touch wood) we would need Lucas to perform like that more often. I wonder with Lucas improving if Rafa really will entertain a bid from Arsenal for Xabi?

Whats your fascination with selling players and money to do this and that? Why do you want us to sell our best players? It doesn't matter how much money we have. What matters is quality on the pitch.

Alonso's one of our better players, PLEASE stop talking about selling him untill we know its going to happen.

Dont tell me mate tell Rafa. I dont want us to sell Alonso but going by what some people are saying a deal will be done. I was just saying if something like that even happened id rather he play well than shyte. Of course he is one of the best players at the club but Rafa came close to selling him in the Summer.

Rafa selling a key player to a rival in January is never, ever going to happen.  Paper talk and nothing more.  :no

The finish was great as well.

Anyone else find it funny how Babel celebrated for his goal? It was like he had run past 4 defenders instead of a scrappy tap in haha

Lucas looked very accomplished yesterday and had a great game IMO. I have stated on here before that I'd lost patience with the kid but I think we might just have something with the lad.

I think he wouldn't be able to win "brazilian footballer of the year" at 19 for being a bad player. I mean it is BRAZIL for goodness sake!

Coming to a new country, new league, new cultures, new language & new management philosophies... it is difficult to adjust.. more difficult than most people think. Some players just never settle down, esp now you are just "another player" in a big-name team. Most tellingly, you are now being watched & criticized by fans around the world.

So when you are under immense pressure and afraid to make mistakes, you naturally will not take risk in your game (hence all his easy square passes). But I supposed he was willing to make that killer pass to gerrard the other day because the game was already won. Besides skills, confidence & morale can also make or break a player.

I will speculate that in his old club in Brazil, he was among the best players and the team was "built around him". I will controversially say the same for Kuyt (top scorer in dutch football), Diouf (African footballer of the year), Cisse (top scorer in french football), Morientes (well-known striker that every liv fans approved), benanyoun (top-class "wizardry" player in west ham) , keane (there is a risk now), etc. We must not forget how good they were before they came to Liverpool. Even Henry is finding it hard in Barca now. And how about our beloved Rush who used to find life difficult in Juventus? Similarly for Veron (in manu), Shevchenko (in chelsea), Forlan (in manu) ... the list go on and on.

On the flip-side, we have players like Torres (in Liverpool) and Henry (in Arsenal) who came in and "suddenly" became world class. Besides their obvious talent, everything else just clicked for them.. and the star is born.

Some players are possibly more "adaptable".. who go around and still perform more or less well.. arguably players like owen & beckham.. and i honestly think they are the exception rather than the rule. But most good players don't move enough these days to really test my hypothesis.. no less bcos clubs hang on to their best players.

Basically everytime you decide to move (or buy a player, if you are the manager), you take the risk of being a flop (liv has its fair share!), be it knowingly or unknowingly.

In the end, if it works out for you in a new environment.. then Fine. If not, it is just too bad... and the wise ones must be decisive to move-on or U-turn (like rush).

another good post mate . Think and hope this is just the start of good things for lucas . While he has been here he has had some decent games , a couple of very good games , some ordinary games and a couple of poor games . He did really well against psv and did well against arsenal and finally was outstanding against newcastle so hopefully he is starting to adapt to the prem and team . Good sign for us for the rest of the season .
