aCe' Posted on Dec. 25 2008,04:44for just one last time... i wanna know why almost everyone down here absolutely hates Jermaine Pennant ?!
he had his chance when he signed and he played ... check this out
2006..
played in more games than any other liverpool player making 52 appearances with Reina 2nd makind 51 appearances... joint top in most assists with Gerrard at 10 ... only managed one goal but played very well in many games and was probably our mom in the CL final...
2007
suffered a bad injury... only managed to play 25 games in total with 7 of them beig sub appearances late on.. scored 2 goals and was second only to Gerrard in our assists charts with 7 despite playing fewer games and minutes than almost everyone in our first team then...
2008
started 3 and came on a sub in 1... didt manage to score but has 2 assists and was our man of the match in the carling cup game he started accordig to many..
******************************************************
basically... the end product argument doesnt hold too well with me and i dont know where it comes from really... the whole 'he obviously has talet but he fails to perform' thing i just dont understand... when he played well everyone was calling for him to be icluded in the England squad... he was one of our better players in 2006 and in 2007 if it wasnt for the injury and then Rafa's decision not to play him after that, whos to say he wouldnt have doe just as well.. this season... he hasnt been given the chance as far as im concerned... you can question his attitude, commitment, etc etc all you want but imo theres little doubt when it comes to the guys talents... but then again same can be said about many many many excellent footballers
Whats most frustrating to me is that we always seem to struggle to use our wide areas effectively... the likes of Kuyt and Benayoun arent real wingers and will always struggle to make a significant impact from wider areas (before anyone trows kuyts 5 goals or whatever at me.. im talking about impact from WIDE areas and not when they play deeper inside or as forwards, second strikers etc).. why do we still keep picking them ahead of Pennant and even Elzhar... i know many teams dont play the traditional winger thing anymore but surely in many cases when you're trying to break down teams and stretch defenses its good to have someone who can actually run with the ball down the line and get some chalk on his knees...
He's no world beater but he isnt half as bad as some make him out to be either... in terms of right wingers i cant think of many in the english league who are better than he is.... Ronaldo,Young, maybe Bentley, SWP... but thats about it... probably as good as Milner, Valencia, Lennon and the likes if not better imo... defo the best option down the right for us given what we have...
Unless we go out and buy someone whos better than him i think it would be best if we just stick him down there in the right wing in a 4-4-2 and give him a few games to prove his worth...

people dont like him because hes an arrogant pi$$head whod rather earn £50k a week to run around London boozing and hittin on skanks than playin football. Then because he has no end product (his crossing is AWFUL FFS!)

Rafa watches players in training carefully, especially after the media start focussing on their England chances. Pennant did think it was god-given right to be in the England team when he played well during that stretch that you mention. Unfortunately, he's gotta realise that it takes more than a few months of playing well to earn a regular spot or even a call up. He lost his focus after not being called up to the squad.
Pennant runs into blind alleys far too often. This forces him to deliver fairly ineffective crosses. When some say that he has talent, it is true. It's just that he still hasn't figured out how to apply it to the extent that he could be considered for a top 4 side.
He does have talent, since as you rightly point out - he did chip in with a few assists. It's just that if Gerrard in his advanced role provides more assists that Pennant in his role as a winger who purely crosses the ball ... for me atleast, there is something not right in that.
If he'd learn to whip in a fast, mid-low height cross or even have the confidence to shoot a bit more - then perhaps he could be used more.
GYBS wrote:ace . You must be making things up . This season kuyt scored more from the right side in 15 games than what pennant has the whole time he has been here . Last season kuyt was second in assists behind gerrard . With yossi just behind . Pennant played with crouch a whole season yet hardly created anything due to his end product and crossing being for the majority of the time poor and wasteful . I really would like to know what pennant you watch cause its not the one we have a liverpool . He is basically not good enough and doesnt bring enough to the team and please dont go on about a half decent second half against a lower league team in the carling cup cause that counts for nothing. The sooner he goes the better .
GYBS wrote:everything you say kuyt doesnt do pennant doesnt as well . Can think of prob three games where he has done well for us couple games against chelsea and the cl final other than that ? ?. Three in his whole time that stand out the rest just the same , lots of ball but too busy cutting inside and too many crosses hit too high or not going past the first man . He has scored twice is it ? In the whole time he has been there . Not good enough .
