Jermaine pennant - off to valencia on a bosman

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby god_bless_john_houlding » Tue Feb 19, 2008 11:10 pm

Jermaine Pennant, in his first five/six months at Anfield was mild and cold at best, really struggled to make an impact at the club.

Then from mid january to the end of last season, he was probably our best player. In Athens against Milan, he tore them apart and had a good chance to score himself. He was just starting to cement his position as the first and only right winger at the club.

Start of this season, he was showing these signs again, and then the injuries hit him. He's been out of contention for a while but his return from injury is a welcomed one by me anyway. If he can regain full fitness and get back to the form he showed at the back end of last season, then we don't need to break the bank and find a right winger. We have an outstanding one in Pennant.

Tonight against Inter, he may of only played the last 10 minutes or so, but he assisted two goals, as well as giving their full back a hard time. Fantastic to see him back in a red shirt and doing what he does best, running at people and crossing the ball for our forwards. He's our answer to any right wing problems, just needs to be given a sustained run in the side again.

2) pass and move is the Liverpool groove
3) FIRST WILL ALWAYS BE FIRST AND SECOND WILL ALWAYS BE NOTHING.
4) If Torres has scored 60 league goals for Liverpool by the start of the 2011/12 season, I'll say he's better than Owen.

I'm sorry John but you don't half talk tosh.

You've spent the past while here slating Liverpool and now reckon Pennant (who was ok, but far from spectacular when he came on) is the answer to our right sided problems?

The first goal came from Kuyt taking a chance by holding his position at the back post, those sorts of crosses where coming in all night but no one really took a chance up until then.

The second goal came from a basic 5 yard pass that didn’t even put Gerrard in a scoring position. That goal was purely because of Gerrard.

In Athens Pennant had more space than anyone else on the pitch but failed to do anything significant with it.

Pennant = decent squad player at best.

I wasn't talking about this particular game, but his form since his arrival. He's been as good as anybody in the Premiership as a right winger, since Feburary of last year.

If he gets back to that sort of form, we won't need to buy a right winger.

Sorry but I have to agree with that.

He has had his chances but I don't think he will ever be up to Liverpool class. He has plenty of flicks and nice little touches but his final ball leaves a lot to be desired.

He is not a bad man to come off the bench to try and win a game and Rafa knows that but I certainly don't think he is in his long term plans for the first team

Pennant is Sh*te i never like him !!!

He's too average for a winger and shouldnt be in a top club like liverpool ..

to see him back in a red shirt and doing what he does best, running at people and crossing the ball for our forwards

Ye running right into them , like seriously he doesnt have any skill and if try's to do some he fails and gives the ball away.
Crosses he's average to, sure anybody can cross a ball in except Aurelio <--- who equally shouldnt be playing for liverpool.

How is it that human nature dictates that we only looks at the past 10 mins and makes a stupid call based on that ...

How many goals has Pennant in liverpool? One?
He's a very orindary player, he's not the world class winger that we needed.

I agree. If anyone comes with a decent bid we should sell him.

Well imo he`s certainly the best crosser we have, if you bring crouch on you have to put Pennant on too and i think if Crouch got a decent run so would he, it was the combination of them both that Inter couldnt handle.
Dont judge a book by the cover, unless you cover just another, because blind exceptance is a sign,

One of the few things that I agree with GBJH on. I rate Pennant highly, and don't think we need a new RW. He will never be the best RW in the world, but he is of the neccessary standard, not well above it, but right at it

Lets put it this way.......pennant is our best winger in the club now...but that isn't saying much.

Its like saying Torres is the best striker in our team.....  :D

But have to say, getting a  RW should be lower down our priority at this moment...

We have to get :

1)1st priority - 2nd striker who is in torres' league
2)2nd priority - Left winger who is in christiano ronaldo's league..... I'm really disappointed with kewell (you guys never thought i would say that don't ya) & Babel for me is an impact player who should be playing upfront.
3)3rd priority - A left back who is in patrice evra's league. Not sure what has happened to riise... think he needs a new club and we can get pretty much a lot for him. Auerlio is a non-issue....i simply don't rate him because he is injured most of the time.

After we get these players...then we can buy a RW who is world class and a CB who is good as heading the ball like hyppia.

He came on last night and didn't look like he wanted to cross the ball, I was seriously worried the threat Finnan had carried was going to stop so Pennant could bugger about on the wing. He didn't beat anyone, did he ever get to the by-line? (not that I recall) And he never looks like scoring which isn't his entire purpose, but decent wingers have to pose a threat on goal - especially handy if they can feed off crosses from the opposite side.

According to FPL he has two assists and no goals all season in the Premiership (789 mins). I've never once had him in my fantasy team and if I do it next year or again then I won't ever have him in my team. That's part of our problem - creativity from midfield in particular. Gerrard is way ahead on seven, Kuyt and Crouch have three each and Pennant is one of three midfielders on two. Flip that to goals from midfield and none of Pennant, Mascherano, Kewell, Lucas and Leto (not really used) has even scored in the Premiership this season. Both of Alonso's came against DERBY and while Benayoun has three goals in the Premiership he has zero assists. That leaves Babel (3) and Gerrard (7) Even worse is only Hyypia has scored a goal from defence (in the Premiership), and yet Carra goes up for corners when I can't even remember the last goal he scored.

Too little from too many sums it up nicely, Pennant isn't necessarily the worst but he is way below Liverpool quality - something you could kinda figure from him moving from Arsenal to BIRMINGHAM. Will we be signing Aliadiare, Stokes and Cygan next?

abit harsh on pennant you guys are... I agree with GBJH to a certain extent here... I wouldn't say we dont' need a new RW... but Pennant on form can trouble any defender... he has more impact than any of our other wingers kewell and babel included... if he only go the byline abit more and cut back for our strikers to finish rather than just pump crosses then he will become a very good winger...
