ROM WOULD PAY £85M FOR TORRES
ABOVE: Fernando Torres 1st July 2008 By Brian Woolnough Roman Abramovich would pay £85m for Fernando Torres if he thought he could get him.

Chelsea’s billionaire owner was an admiring onlooker here on Sunday night as the brilliant Liverpool striker dominated Spain’s European Championship victory over Germany.

Torres was man of the match in every way and how Chelsea would love to prise him away from Anfield.

Their first reported offer of £50m was laughed away by Liverpool and Torres has admitted he has no wish to quit Merseyside.

Abramovich, however, is determined to rebuild Chelsea’s squad for new manager Phil Scolari and the Russian has been a constant visitor to Euro 2008 over the last weeks.

He has put aside more than £250m for Scolari and those close to Abramovich expect yesterday’s capture of Deco to start a flurry of transfer activity over the next few weeks.

The Russian has certainly put Premier League managers to shame with his spying trips and has spent more time here than any other club. He has easily seen many more matches than England coach Fabio Capello.

Torres would suit Chelsea perfectly with the way Scolari likes his teams to play. The Spaniard is the best line leader in the world and his movement, guile and reading of the game was clear to all on Sunday.

It is ironic that while Manchester United are bracing themselves for Real Madrid to make their first official move for Cristiano Ronaldo, Chelsea would pay more for Torres if they were offered encouragement.

A weekly salary of more than £200,000 a week is not out of the question as Abramovich is determined to bankroll his club into European winners.

He is determined to overtake rivals Manchester United next season.

And what Abramovich has been impressed with is the quality he has seen at the Euros.

Teams like Spain, Holland, Russia and Portugal have played the kind of football he would love to see at Stamford Bridge.

He wants Chelsea to win the lot while being entertainers and that has been the hallmark of the European Championships.

The quality was exceptional and there have been so many lessons for England to learn.

Capello says he wants to transfer the pace and the tempo of the Premier League into England’s football but that will not be enough.

Not when you see how other teams passed their way through one of the best tournaments on record. There has been a refreshing change of attitude.

If Cesc Fabregas was English, the national team would be built around him.

With Spain, he is not even first choice. Had David Villa been fit, the Arsenal midfield star would not have started the final.

Fabregas in the Premier League is outstanding. To Spain, he is just a squad member.

It just proves the gap between the England team and what we have seen here in Switzerland and Austria.

As far as technique, passing and control, England is way off the required standard.
For instance, England has no one like Torres.

Who plays up front for Capello when the World Cup qualifiers start? Wayne Rooney doesn’t like being the lone striker, the coach is not convinced about Michael Owen. So we are down to Peter Crouch?

Crouch or Torres? Again, it just proves how big the gap is between England and the rest of Europe.

Realising how far England are behind the rest has been the most depressing aspect while enjoying a cracking tournament.

You certainly wouldn’t put money on England finishing above Croatia in their group and avoiding a play-off.

Capello’s job is to get England playing like Spain because that is the benchmark now.

He certainly won’t get any help from the Premier League who only think of club football.

If the Italian coach succeeds, he will be worth his £6.5m-a-year salary. And had he spent more time here, he would have realised just how huge his job is.

It has been a tournament to give the game heart with the attacking attitude of the coaches. Next season it’s over to England.

Oh for a Torres and that is just what Abramovich was thinking as he flew out of Vienna Airport yesterday.

Torres is worth his weight in gold and Abramovich would willingly hand it over – if Liverpool would only like to change their mind.

I know this is Goal, but it would actually make a lot of sense to move for him as the article has stated. He'd definitely upgrade the quality of our set pieces and our attack. This would really be a smart buy.

Very good set piece taker but his on the slide. He had a poor season last year and I dont think we should be looking at him. Nakumera at celtic has just as good as a free kick as juninho and younger.

Juinho 5 seasons back when he was 28 yes not now , would never get into the team and was inconsistent last season . As for chelsea well , like lee has said , they're ruining the beautiful , absolute disgrace

could be mate , too many stars and too many ego's in one team , i remember ballack and drogba fighting over a freekick last season , was against the mancs , clash of the ego's i really hope they falter and scolari is sacked . Chelsea are the reason why this 6+5 rule is going to be implemented , they're buying all foreign talent and how many homegrown players do they have? Lampard may not even be here next season , terry is getting older and that only leaves joe cole as a consistent starter , with wright phillips not even making the bench as well as wayne bridge

NEWS JUST IN!! Xabi Alonso will NOT join Juventus. Instead Rafa has struck a great deal with BARCELONA for Spain international Andreas Iniesta to come to Anfield plus £4.5million. Benitez will this week make a final offer of £14.5million for Gareth Barry, If this fails he will turn his attention to Valencia's David Silva. Peter Crouch + £4million is going to BLACKBURN and in return David Bentley will arrive on Merseyside. Transfer season does my f.cking head in, it's all just talk and sh1t all happens i would rather start the season know tbh.

The players we have will have played together one year longer and should be able to make that final push.
