The natural succesor - Who can take the his place

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Ok he is gone, I hoped he would stay and I have my reservations about Baros as his natural successor. My point is tho that in my lifetime there has always been somebody who comes through the club to replace great Anfield strikers. In my lifetime there was Daglish, Rush, Aldridge, Rush again, Fowler, Owen. This list makes it easy to see how us as fans have been able to cope with the departure of some great players as we knew we could transfer that love to the new star. Has the line of succesion been cut, can cisse, baros or flo really make it onto that illustrious list. Bobby Robson recently stated that Kluivert was up there with Newcastles greatest signings so, if you dont think our current strikforce can live up to Owen, out of palyers who are available and who we could realisticly make an offer for who would you like to see at Anfield.
The man who came to merseyside from Newcastle, the man who says he's part of Liverpool as much as the Liver building. When he was needed Alan Kennedy was there. And with now just 8 minutes to go it could be that Alan Kennedy has made a little history.

I am confident Cisse will fill in the void just nicely. We will have to wait and see if Baros is cut out for the Premiership, otherwise just point him the direction to Barcelona. Pongolle and le Tallec will need another season at least but they sure are talented to play a significant role in the coming years.

This is the problem - there aren't too many strikers worth having that we can afford at the moment.

Instead of trying to replace Owen, the best policy would be to promote everyone up a spot, meaning Baros is definitely in the first choice 11 (if Benitez didn't have him there already), and then buy a fourth-choice striker. At the moment, we have Diouf, but seeing as though Benitez doesn't seem to like him, he's only an interim solution at best.

A natural successor in terms of pace would probably be Vassell, although obviously there are question marks over his strike rate. However, if we're talking bargain basement at the moment while Rafa shores up the rest of the team - don't laugh, but how about Fowler being brought back as cover? The few times I saw him last season, his movement and positioning was excellent, his touch was superb and against Chelsea in particular he was insanely unlucky not to score a hat-trick or even more. In spite of this, it looks like Keegan still has reservations about his fitness, and he looks set for a subs spot this year.

Someone like Benitez would be excellent for Fowler, I reckon. If he can sort out his fitness and get himself a bit of form, he'd be an excellent asset to have on the bench. Can you imagine the damage Pongolle and an in-form Fowler could do in the last 20 mins against a tiring defence?

Realistically though, I can't see Benitez buying anybody that isn't Spanish until the January window, when he's had a chance to look at other Premiership sides. He's probably got his eye on some youngster that none of us have ever heard of, I'd guess.

Some good points above.

I think Benitez has now trimmed the squad to leave a good first 11, and now will only bring in good players when available, as opposed to GH bringing in the next Zidane!

Baros is Class (euro top-scorer), Cisse is class (proven in stats), Pongolle is a potential highly-rated young player.
They can only get better (unless GH was still here, no disrespect GH, but, well okay,, it is in this matter...)
I believe there'll be no more mistreatments

Interesting choice there St Mike ,I also rate Tristan as a fine striker who would fill the gap sufficiently   :D  :D and would be available for a moderate price

Bring Robbie back what wonderful romanticism. Mmm Tristan now there is one I didnt think about. In fact he would be perfect, he prob needs to kick start his career a little, would know all about Rafa and is prob in our price range. Quick someone get Parry on the line and tell the muppet we can do a better job than him. Do you think though that the mirrors in the changing room would be big enough to get him and Baros in front off though, we dont want them to argue about it.

after owen leaving we will find it hard to find a replacement, think about it who is gonna want to join a club that sells their best players. It doesnt exactly signal their ambition does it?

I think our forward 4 meaning Baros, Cisse, Pongelle and Maybe Mellor are still a force to be reckon with. Look at the other EPL team and I don't see many team can match us. I would rather see Rafa bringing in a CB or another Midfielder.:)
