Well said GBJH...............

I don't think this was what JBG intended when he wrote his  article at the start of this thread and the content of his original post is excellent.

Benitez has spent 48.5 Million on players and recouped £33.5 Million from selling players which gives a net "spend" of £15 Million. The club got £30 from their CL run last season alone........ So the idea that Benitez has been wasteful does not hold true. It's obvious and well stated from JBG that he hasn't always bought the right players but on the whole he's been quick to remedy that situation .i.e. Bellamy, Krompkamp, Numez , Sissoko etc.....

So what has he given us for £15 Million ?

2 CL Finals, one of which goes down as possibly the greatest European Cup Final of them all and 1 FA Cup win, another epic final.

A Carling Cup loss and a couple of 3rd places in the League in the 4 seasons in charge completes the silverware ......

What hasn't he given us for £ 15 Milion spent ? Well obviously the Title which appears to be on the wish list of pretty much every Liverpool fan on here and to some degree thats understandable.

The way I see it is this. There seems to be 2 polarised opinions that are diverse and as different from each other than they could possibly be.

1. Sack Rafa and give someone else a chance to win the Title but are you prepared to give up your cup ambitions to achieve this ?

2. Keep Rafa based largely on the realisation that for the club at present and because of his achievements in the past he is the best option we have.

All i will say is to sack Benitez now based on a freak result against Barnsley in the FA Cup and inparticular on the eve of a last 16 CL tie would be sheer stupidity. We are Liverpoool Football Club FFS not some knee jerk club like Spurs or Newcastle !

And one final thing .............

I made the mistake of breaking my golden rule and coming on here less than 3 hours aftere the end of the match earlier tonight and I regret it profoundly. A lot of members lost the plot and their heads and some disgraceful things were said about the club, each other and the manager inparticular.

I got caught up myself and exchanged a couple of unpleasantries with "The Rock" for which I will apolgise publicly.

Whatever your viepoints and I KNOW that it's a difficult and frustrating time for all of us who love this club could we not for the sake of the LFC and the forum try and agree to disagree without being "disagreeable" (there is a difference)

I don't know where you got your figures Dalglish, but if you are going to include his achievements from 2005 surely you should include all his spending mate?

Rafael Benítez bought 47 players for £133,066,000

Rafael Benítez sold 49 players for £71,575,000

Not including Mascherano

Apologies Saint................ The figures are what he has spent in the TWO transfer windows since Hicks and Gillet took over.

An oversight on my part.

Dalglish I'd go for your first option. Forget the cups and concentrateon the league, I'd even be prepared to accept Benitez as manager if that was the case. If we went for the league alone, under him, then I'd support the fella the whole way.
1) You'll Never Walk Alone
2) pass and move is the Liverpool groove
3) FIRST WILL ALWAYS BE FIRST AND SECOND WILL ALWAYS BE NOTHING.
4) If Torres has scored 60 league goals for Liverpool by the start of the 2011/12 season, I'll say he's better than Owen.

I think most fans want what they have never had and we are no different. We have never won the Prem so it becomes like the Holy Grail. Throw in a few Shankley quotes about bread and Butter and we all get whipped into a frenzy akin to the Emperors New clothes...............

Lets face facts here, even if the unpalatable Mourinho arrived or Scolari or the Dalai Lama for that matter without the massive funds required to mount a serious challenge we are NOT in a position to challenge for the title and recent seasons have bourne that out.

There are others who have urged Benitez to give some of the crop of promising young players we have in the reserves a run out and build from within the club. I happen to think there is something to be said for that but not in the present climate where there is a frenzy of impatience surrounding the ambitions of the club !

No problems mate, one thing I would like your opinion on, do you still think Rafa can win the league with Liverpool?

I know he will win cups with Liverpool, but the League?

Rafa has been trying to win the league, but he's smart enough to know that unless he can do well in the champions league he will not attract the foreign imports he requires to strengthen the squad.  We are in a new era of football.  The champions league is everything weither we like it or not.  that why these tosswers are talking about extra matches. Yes many countries watch the premiership but the world watches the champions league.  So let me spell it out to all of you so you can get your brains in gear, the Champions league is the biggest prize in world football, it is the dream of every professional player, world wide, to win it. If Rafa can either win it or get to the to the final, there will be a multitude of players who will look at this and think, hey this guy has something here, some ability to get his teams to the big stage I might just take a chance on this wee Spanish man he needs to find a way to atrract players who don't know or don't care about Liverpool's history.  I will say this however.  he is avery brave man because either deliberately or by fortune he has put all his eggs in the one basket.

Here's the old money arguement again. I'm getting bored of it to be honest. Does money stop at the top three? If it does fair enough, if it's the same rule for the rest of the Premiership and footballing world then it's a load of bollox. We've spent more than Everton but they're above us. Spurs and Newcastle spend more than us but we finish above them. Sunderland have spent massively compared to the rest of their rivals, but still find themselves in a relegation fight. QPR have been bought by a man richer than Ambrovich, yet aren't even the Championship's top half. Stoke don't have two pennies to rub together yet are top (maybe second now, not sure on goal difference, certainly same points as Watford) of the Championship.

Now for Benitez personally. One thing I hear about him is this "he broke the monopoly of Barcelona and Real Madrid with Valencia" Now I don't know Spanish football all that well, so forgive me if I'm a little out here. But Barcelona and Real Madrid spent close to 50 million every season correct? Like Chelsea and United do now correct? So if he can win the league with Valencia under similar circumstances (from what I've gathered) to what he has here, where's the difference? Those who support Benitez constantly bring up his Valencia days, well can they answer me that?
