why does moving to right mid have to change his massive influence. as i said for a while, pre world cup, beckham was the dominant figure in an england shirt from the right side

the only game beckham exerted his influence on the whole game was against greece,

and he wasnt playing right mid. well he was, but he was all over the place, and you might as well be centre mid if thats what yer gonna do. right mids arent meant to do that.

isnt there a case for saying that liverpool have suffered in the past for puting too much emphasis on certain players (owen) and building teams around them when the players weve got shoud be adapted to fit the style of play the manager wants to use???

so tell us what this system is "that the manager wants to use" where it means gerrard has to play right mid.

what system are you talking about? why would any system mean we have to pull our best player out of the position he plays best at?   i can sort of see your point, but what you're saying would conclude in gerrard playing centre mid, as i think any manager would have a system involving that, as thats where gerrard is amazing.

steven gerrard has gained a reputation over the last couple of years as being one of the best CENTRAL MIDFIELDERS in europe. you don't drag him out of that position just to fill a hole which is vacant. ok, he could do a job there. he's a superb crosser of the ball. however he will not have as much of the ball playing out there and will therefore not have as much influence in games. surely benitez should be able to see that we have no recognised right sided player? ???

guys im really not saying he should play there just a possibility.

the system im talking about would one where width is the key factor, the emphasis is on geting the ball wide as soon as possible and putting as many crosses in as possible, the wingers are as important as the centre of the midfield and if we use a system like this it could be important to have our strongest players and best crossers of a ball in these positions which unfortunately at the moment means gerrard and kewell.

im not suggesting this as a long term solution but we have cover (if unproved) in centre mid but no class right mid except gerrard.

maybe beni's influence can help murphy become more disciplined in staying wide??? or hopefully a youngster will come through which would be brilliant.

In my opinion that was one of the reasons we where so successful in the treble season, Gerrard and Murphy kept switching depending on games and they gave us different options in the middle and on the right.

Murphy gave us more intelligence and creativety in the middle and Gerrard gave us more pace and energy down the right and vice versa. I remember the Man Utd game at Anfield where Steve scored that screamer he played wide and had a blinder.

Its not something i'd do often but against the lesser teams where we need more craft in the middle and more pace and power out wide i'd give it a go.

Also remember though, in the treble season, we had McAllister.

Gerrard was played out on the right to accomodate Macca in the side, although even when Macca wasn't playing Murphy was often played inside with Gerrard out right, although as Stu says, they did interchange.

Don't forget that Stevie covers a lot of ground and he still ends up on the right quite a lot. Some of his best assists come from the right, such as his brilliant ball to Owen in the Middlesboro game at Anfield last year.

Gerrard is a top player and would do a job for us almost anywhere on the pitch, but at the end of the day every good side needs an engine, and there are few better engines than Steven Gerrard.

No really, Stu is like Ghaddaffi: once a brutal and vile terrorist who has turned over a new leaf by handing over his WMD and is now an elder statesman of the forum!!

Anyway, as bad as Stu ever was there could never be any comparison between him and Larry Flynt's W*nk mag, for example.  :Oo:

Why doesn't Rafa play Gerrard at right back...he'd do a great job.....but seiously I wish the boss would put us out of our misery and buy a class right sided midfielder.

3 Steven Gerrards. 1 in the middle, 1 on the right and 1 at right back. Now that would be a team!! :D

JBG... was that comment a wind up or serious?
