Schuster attacks 'ugly' reds

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby club_Levis » Wed Sep 05, 2007 2:11 pm

Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster has branded Liverpool "unattractive" and "ugly".

The German, who took charge at the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer, believes the Reds are one of Real's main rivals for the Champions League this season, but is not a fan of Rafael Benitez's style of football.

He told Spanish daily AS: "Liverpool rely on an unattractive style of football. They are an ugly team to play.

"Look how they really gave Barcelona a going-over last season, when they knocked them out of the Champions League. That's what I mean.

"I would rate Liverpool, like AC Milan, as our major rivals for the Champions League this season.

"They never tire of winning big trophies."

Schuster believes his side can retain the Spanish Primera Liga, as well as winning their 10th European Cup, after spending around £80million in the summer.

He said: "Signing (Gabriel) Heinze when he wasn't allowed to join Liverpool took a weight off my shoulders.

"We were desperate for exactly that type of player.

"As for Arjen Robben, the mess Chelsea made of allowing us to sign him has left him without a proper pre-season.

"Robben needs this international break to train hard and get ready for action with us later this month."

Not sure about how to react on this one!!!

Thats rich coming from a guy who's team last season (Getafe) went into alot of games intent on kicking seven shades of shite out of their oppenents. Just because he now manages Real Madrid he's suddenly an authority on attractive football.  :no

He's clearly not seen us this season then. In 2005 I'd have agreed with him, but last season was a reasonable step forward, and so far this season we've been playing some excellent stuff.

Dont worry what the other managers say, it goes to show that they are all affraid of the Mighty Reds, They all know that LIverpool this season are far better than the old liverpool last season, and that we will be a major force on all fronts.

I can't see anything too insulting in what he says.

He considers us, along with Milan, their main rivals for the UCL this season. Thank you sir.

But he feels we can only do it due to our "unattractive and ugly" football. I consider than an insult coming from a clown like him.

From his point of view it's quite a clever comment because he is providing us with a back handed compliment whilst discounting Barca as any kind of threat to them in the Champs League!!

Still only give him 6 months  :grinning:

That's good for us then, if we can win the competition playing unattractive and ugly football. Imagine what we'll be able to do when we play exciting and beautiful football.

I take what he says as a compliment, thank you Bernd.

I've been looking for the real thing in Spanish to grasp better the nuances of his words, because translations can be a bit tricky. "They're an ugly team to play" for instance, should be taken as a compliment, as it means that you can't possibly expect to win a team like that if you don't give 100%.

I'd love to see in context the "unattractive" thingy aswell, but I couldn't find it in the online editions, maybe the quotes appeared in the paper edition.

I'd be surprised if he slagged Liverpool to be honest, he's not that kind of coach, and he's not a lover of soft football. Good to know he respects Liverpool.

I've seen the article although he does call our football 'ugly' - I read the article as more of a backhanded compliment, he is basically saying he sees us a one of the major threats to Madrid winning the CL and considers us the hardest team to play against due to our style.
