I'm surprised that Bascombe has decided to go to a sister publication of the s*n but at the end of the day it's his choice and I personally won't lambast him for it. Don't get me wrong though as I hate the shit wrag and wouldn't even let me auntie's dog take a crap on it. As stmike says the boycott should remain focussed on the one wrag and not spread to others just for their association.

My personal view of Bascombe has gone right down though and I certainly won't be reading any of his stuff again whether or not it's in the NOTW or the local free paper that comes through the door.

Maybe he is going to shaft them from within. If he prints a massive apology for all the cr ap the s*n has ever come out with then I doubt the S*n do anything professionally and wouldn't notice before going to print!

Who knows he may even turn it into a paper worth wiping your Rs on, it can't get any worse than it is

Don't forget, the editorial decisions the Sun took over Hillsborough were led by Kelvin McKenzie, not Murdoch. Even Murdoch was shocked at what McKenzie did (KM had a long leash then and did whatever he pretty much liked). remember Murdoch saying, 'Even you've gone too far this time' to Mckenzie.

I don't recall the NOTW at the time echoing what the Sun did and said - correct me if I'm wrong. But the problems were mostly confined to McKenzie's red-top, not the whole Murdoch stable.

He's not done anything any of you wouldn't. In any walk of life, if someone offers you a job doing half what you currently do, for twice the wage, you'd accept it without a second thought.

The NOTW is not the S*n, and anyone who gives that lad stick for thinking of his own welfare and family is a c*nt.

Now then - debate that if you wish.

IMHO its the Sunday S*n.

Its the S*n and I refuse to read it. However I won't lambast the lad for moving up in the world, its just I won't read his opinion again. Simple.

I believe Steven Gerrard should have got a lot more stick when he serialised his book in their but we covered all that up for him with "it was his agent" and "its not the s*n" etc.

While not totally agreeing with Bascombe's move, I can understand why he did it. I've been a fan of his reports in the Echo as he is an excellent writer and obviously he's an ambitious individual with ambitions to write for a national. Obviously with starting a family, he's got to put that first and if anybody was in his situation, I think they'd be a liar if they said that their heads wouldn't be turned by an increased salary, a company car and a good pension. It's easy for us to sit behind a computer screen an label him a "sell out" and say things like "I wouldn't do it in his position" when you know that you never will, so it's obviously a case of easier said than done. As I said, I'm not totally comfortable with Bascombe's move to NOTW, but obviously, he has to do what's best for his family.

For the record, I have never bought the s*n and the NOTW in my life. Obviously the Hillsborough boycott is the fundamental reason behind that, but if they hadn't spread their lies 18 years ago, I still wouldn't touch that foul rag because even scooping up dog sh#t would be too good for it.

Personally, I've always regarded the NOTW as a taboo of sorts. I've frowned upon reds who read it, but I wouldn't condemn someone for reading it in the same way if I saw somebody reading the s*n. I think in this case it's a personal choice, seeing as you have to draw a line somewhere. I'm aware of people boycotting all of News International given Murdoch's ownership of the s*n, and while that's not something I would do, I respect the views of those who do.

What I'm trying to say is that it's all about personal opinions on where you draw a line with the boycott. As I said above, I'm not entirely comfortable with the NOTW and I personally would never buy it, but you have to make a distinction somewhere along the line and obviously that's what Bascombe has done.

Spot on Lando, no one would turn an opportunity like that down, It just means no Liverpool fans will be reading his columns, and If anyone thinks he'll be allowed to issue some sort of heart felt apology to the fans, wake up, that would be tantamount to him print a piece admitting that their company was wrong, and I think 20 years has proved there is NO CHANCE of that happning

The Sun and NOTW run offers where you have to buy the papers for tokens, as well as bingo and the like.

Anyone who disassociates one from the other is either stupid or lying.

As for people saying fair enough, the principle of doubling your wage is all well and good, but when you have been as close to both the people and club as Bascombe has, you must understand people will be pis.sed.

For those that have fogotten what happened, they printed stories depicting Liverpool fans stealing from dying members of their families and friends, urinating on dead bodies of loved ones as well as pointing the finger of blame at "drunken yob fans without tickets".

Court cases proved the blame was not the fans but the police.

Imagine losing someone at a football match. Imagine now reading stories about how you stole from them as they lay dying.. Imagine people printing stories about how you where responsible for their death.

Now tell me the boycott should not extend to the Sunday version of a paper that printed that bullsh.it.

Dont buy either papers never have never will. Was to young when Hillsbrough happened to understand the situation, but as ive grown up I have come to understand that assocoation can be just as bad as being the culprit!

Gotta weigh the options here, new salary better job vs alienating most reds fans. Hes obviously made his decison based on circumstance.

Its a pity that he made this decision it really is.

Fair do's he has a family, though you're not telling me the couldn't manage on the wage he's already on! Christ...whats more important - £££ or loyalty and the respect for them that perished. Never mind 'nearly 20 years ago now...' There are lines that don't even need to be considered easy to cross. I wonder at the wisdom of his coming to this decision whether lightly or well though out. The fella KNOWS the implications of this...

If he was better in the job he wouldn't even have to consider this offer. They'd be battering down the door if he was up to scratch. Cheap move for me. Whichever way up you call it.

personally i agree with adam and leon, the notw IS the sunday s*n.
imo liverpool fans should have nothing to do with the rag, and i'm shocked that bascombe has made this decision. i can understand his personal reasons for the decision, but couldn't he have just waited for an offer from a respectable paper??

not to mention the fact that the notw is on a par with the sport in terms of journalism.

Well, anyone who doesn't associate the NOTW with the S*n has their head burried between their cheeks. It's like boycotting Coca-Cola and walking into a shop and buying a Sprite or Fanta. Different drinks, yes, but made by the same head company. In this modern day and age, people do tend to sell their souls to the Devil for a better way of life.

I fully understand our antipathy towards the Sun but before I comment on Bascombes "defection" would/could somebody please tell me how many of the Suns current personnel were employed by the Sun at the time that they made their disgraceful accusations about LFC fans .

I'm not looking to excuse them (far from it) , but not being a Sun reader I don't know who writes or edits the paper and now find myself wondering are the people we vent our spleen on actually the one's who deserve it ? .

Born just after WW2 I grew up hating all Germans , it wasn't until 20 years after WW2 that I realised all Germans weren't in fact Nazis.

Like I said , I'm not looking to defend them ,it's just that before I comment on Bascombes decision I'd like to know how many of the journalists who wrote such sh'ite about us and the editors who allowed it to be published are still actually working for the Sun .

It assumes everyone is motivated by money, which is a complete fallacy.

Irrespective of the NOTW's association with the S*n, it's a pile of w@nk anyway. He may earn more money at the NOTW, but I would hardly call it a move up in the world.
