Good read that, Peewee, even for not that youngsters like me. Thanks for that.

I knew a few of the details but not most of them. Very interesting indeed. Can any of you explain me this a bit? I'm not sure if I grasp what it implies.

Shankly's influence in all this was crucial. A true Socialist, he wasthe ultimate believer in the concept a football club had a responsibility to perform a service not to the shareholders but to the ordinary man in the street who worshipped at its gates.

Others in the game recognised this, including that wise old Shankly contemporary the late Joe Mercer.

I think that paragraph means that Shankly understood that football was just more than a sport but it had to somehow educate and help the popular crowd, but I always thought football was the sport of humble people where as Rugby the one of rich people from the very beginning. Does that paragraph mean that until that point the club weren't that "humple people aimed"? I'm not sure if I understood that point well.

Thank you.

its not really talking about education mate, its more saying that the club is not strictly a business but its purpose is to entertain the supporters. i am sure you realise that without supporters then there would be no football club (well not a club of this stature anyway).

shankly always had a reputation as a 'people person', he knew what the fans wanted and on occassion would stand on the kop during games, he was aware how important the supporters are to the club and how important the club is to the supporters.

the club has always had a working class following,  i think the meaning of the word humble here is aimed at people who dont have much and live a humble existence, the working class, but shankly was the first manager i believe who identified with the supporters so thats were the link between club and supporters really started in ernest i think.

i remember shankly as a manager as i was born in 1967, in fact he was still manager when i went to my first game in 1973, still to young really to realise the importance of the man at that stage, but looking back i think he was the first manager who bonded.

i may be wrong with this, maybe woof or red baron know better than me about the earlier managers and their relationships

At the risk of turning this thread into a Shakly love in, try the new book written by his grandaughter for an insight into the workings of the man. I have not had the pleasure yet, but its a must read and I ordered it today.

I think it was Tommy Smith who remarked one time (I am not quoting by the way) "He (Shankly) left you under no uncertain terms fully aware of the fact that he felt the fans where the most important part of the football club and not the players."

Stories of him inviting kids into his home to watch the geam, passing match tickets out to people in his street and turing up at weddings, birthdays and baptisms are legendary.

There used to be lads pitch side selling sweets. They had a tray around there necks like a cinema usherette.People used to throw money down to the pitch, then the lad would stand ther touching all his products till he got the thumbs up.He would then throw it up onto the Kop.Believe it or not most of the time the person it was intendid for got it.A lad out of our school used to carry a tray, conseqently it was free sweets for us every week.

I've known some VERY OLD grounds and part of you describe, the pI$$ thingy though, shocked me when some months back, Dalglish (our poster) wrote that not everything was good in the Kop's past. I guess you really don't miss that part, do you? :D

Thanks for the insight. And yes, "humble" for me meant "working class" it's a respectful way we have here in Spain to refer to people who's not posh.
