With the new season now a few weeks old the original question is even harder to answer now we've seen the new lads turn in some great performances and the rest of the squad upping their game . I think we all agree on the back four and Reina of course is a given but the permutations for the midfield are a real puzzle .

I'm not sure whether to go with an ever improving Pennant or give an impressive Benayoun the nod for a couple of games at least .Over on the left is there any longer room for Harry Kewell ? Riise slots in effectively at LM , defensively minded , decent cross if he gets a bit of space and always capable of getting us off our seats with one of his blockbusters. Then there's Babel , young quick and tricky , also with a powerful shot , or should I forget all three of them , put Benayoun on the left which solves the problem of what to do with Pennant .

If sorting out the best wide men is a problem, who to pair with Gerrard is just as difficult.Normally I'd go with an on form Alonso BUT (and it's only my opinion) he hasn't exactly been at his best recently , good performances yes but no great ones .So it's down to Mascherano or Sissoko , despite the rave reviews Momo got from some members for his last couple of games I still think that technically he is miles behind a very very impressive Mascherano who gets my nod.

Up front . (christ my head hurts  :D ) Torres (obviously) and Kuyt. Kuyts had some stick from many and much of it deserved but I still feel that given a decent run together he a Torres would form our best strike partnership. TBH I wouldn't mind either of the other two lads bt for me Kuyts the best option.

So I'm left with.

.                                 Reina

.       Finnan       Carragher     Agger      Arbeloa

.      Pennant      Gerrard       Mascherano     Benayoun

.                        Kuyt          Torres

:)

Same team..but if kewell is fit...he will be in there instead of Benayoun  :)

Should be 4-4-2 home or away, we need wins to win the league not scrap for draws. Maybe 4-5-1 for the very toughest away games like Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal but everywhere else we need to be looking for wins. If we play 4-4-2, don't win but come away with a draw then so be it, I'd rather we went for the wins and lost a few then came away with draws. In the title race, and I'm sure mancs and chelski view it this way, a draw is two points dropped not one point gained. You need something like 90 points to win the title these days, if you draw only 6 games that means you need 28 wins which is a lot and the most Liverpool has managed in the ENTIRITY of the Premiership is 25 wins. We can only win 19 at home and even that is unlikely

Most Wins 1992/3 to 2006/7

2005/6 P38 W25 Pts 82
2001/2 P38 W24 Pts 80
1994/5 P42 W21 Pts 74
1995/6 P38 W20 Pts 71
2000/1 P38 W20 Pts 69
2006/7 P38 W20 Pts 68

Most AWAY Wins 1992/3 to 2006/7

2001/2 P19 W12 Pts 39
2005/6 P19 W10 Pts 34
1996/7 P19 W9 Pts 32
2002/3 P19 W9 Pts 29

Most HOME Wins 1992/3 to 2006/7

2005/6 P19 W15 Pts 48
2006/7 P19 W14 Pts 46
1995/6 P19 W14 Pts 46
1994/5 P21 W13 Pts 44
1992/3 P21 W13 Pts 43
1997/8 P19 W13 Pts 41

Even if we win all our home games we'd still likely need 33 points from away games and that's likely to require nine wins on the road minimum.

So best XI playing 4-4-2 has to be :

GK Reina
RB Finnan
CB Carragher
CB Agger
LB Arbeloa
RM Benayoun
CM Gerrard
CM Mascherano
LM Riise
CF Torres
CF Kuyt

Pennant is unlucky, I like Riise on the left and I like Benayoun. Alonso has been as bad as Sissoko in giving the ball away and I am nervous with some of his passes that can lead to goals for the opposition as much as Liverpool. LB is still an area I'm not 100% happy with but Arbeloa has done well there. Agger is fitting in nicely so I'm happy to leave Hyypia's lack of pace to weaker opponents and resting the others. I think most of the rest pick themselves, perhaps some might argue a different front pair. Flicking up this page I think most have got over the idea that Crouch is one of our best two strikers, only a matter of time before most people who may have criticised me months ago come around to my way of thinking

Of course there is the problem that pennant played one of his best games vrs derby and he played 40% of match up the left wing and looked very good : D
