Luis Garcia Leaves Anfield - He Signs for Athletico Madrid

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I’m quite saddened by the departure of Luis; he is a fantastic talent and played an influential part in our recent successes. I felt at times the criticisms Luis received were overly harsh, though I understand the criticisms as Luis often had me screaming at the TV screen or in the stands.

There were times where he tried to be flash and lost the ball, or had his passes intercepted, as well as giving the ball away cheaply, he was and is a special player. It’s easy to forget that without his contribution we wouldn’t have made it to the Champions League Final and without his goal against Chelsea we wouldn’t have made it into the final of the FA Cup.

I oppose the notion that Luis was too lightweight for the Premiership, sure he had problems adjusting at first, then again he had his feathers ruffled for a while, which was to be expected. There were many occasions where Luis went in for tackles and for all his faults, which isn’t many, he played with his heart on sleeve. In most of his matches he tried his best and more often than not, he delivered. When the chips were down and the team needed a bit of magic or a spark, who delivered it? Luis Garcia.

This season will highlight just how much the club will miss Luis and for all the frustration he caused and for all of the wasteful passes Luis made, there is no doubting he has been an influential player during his short, but promising spell at the club.

Good luck, Luis and thanks for the memories.

More than rubbish, it was propaganda for Atletico fans consumption. Luis Garcia was clearly wanting to come back to Spain and they reached an agreement about him sooner.

The Atletico board wanted to sell Torres aswell but it takes more time to sell your best player as the negotiations are tougher so saying it was independent deal was necessary to win more time to negotiate on the torres front, as the fans were pressing.

Being independent links is quite unlikely because I can see many teams paying that money for a Spanish international (after all) that comes from Liverpool and has good goal numbers. Maybe not Madrid or Barcelona, but definitely 5 or 6 mid-big teams like Sevilla Zaragoza or Villareal.

IMHO Luis Garcia would be a good addition to most if not all primera division squads.

Personally I'm quite sad  :(

this is disgusting.
parry better sign more skillful players now that Garcia is gone. we lack flair so bad! i m sure chelski and manure and other teams will be smiling.
!@#$%^&*
and Heimdall, what has ''Riise's piledriver shots'' have anything to do with flair?
i wont mind seeing Benayoun now that Garcia seems to be leaving for sure. :(

I think this deal has to go into the file marked: "One of those things"
We wanted and needed a player like Torres and Garcia clearly felt the time was right for him to head back home and so it all seemed to tie up quite neatly in the end for everyone concerned.
Whether he has been sold cheaply is hard to say without knowing the deatils of what is obviously a fairly complicated deal involving cash and player exchange BUT I for one will miss little Luis.
He has consistantly scored goals in a crucial games at the highest level and I agree with some comments that we wouldn't even have been in Istanbul to perform the miracle without his contributions. He had a flair and selfishness missing in a lot of our other players and while he did have weaknesses I was always pleased to see him come onto the field.
All I can say is thank you for the goals and that superb "thumb-in-mouth" celebration and all the best at your new club Luis.

I'll missing saying "F**king Hell Garcia!" during matches, wether for some brillance or more than likely laying off a bad ball or losing posession. Would never get in Man Utd or Chelsea's team, not good enough for Liverpool and their persuit of the prem tital, sorry! Good luck though Garcia!

I'll be disappointed if he goes but it remains to be seen whether it will be a mistake or not, if it is necessary in order to sanction the Torres deal then it could turn out to be a good move. If he is homesick then you cannot say it is a mistake on Rafa's part - it's just the way it goes.

I suppose you're right. Whether or not it turns out to be a mistake or just unfortunate circumstances a matter of time, I suppose. Depends if we get an equal to better replacement (which is a must). That will soften the blow for me personally.

All the best Luis.  Sad to see you go but best of luck for the remainder of your career.  Hope you make it back to Anfield on the odd occasion to sit with your pals on the Kop...
