i think babu u mentioned u have a background in science or liked that sort of thing? this one is science/maths/ancient history cocktail.

read "Hall of the Gods" by Nigel Appleby.....some of the maths involved is baffling but if u can get ur head around it should be an interesting read.

i myself haven't read it fully but intend to, and what i have read of it is very interesting...

yeah i love science, but mathematics and physics are not my strongest points. I will check out that book on amazon.

I have just started the Dark tower by Ste king. has any one read it and is it any good.

Pretty spooky that, Just about to go and read the last chapter of the final book. An absolutely epic read. A little bit tough to read in places, particularly the first book but on the whole a brilliant set of books, quite complex and deep but as usual King writes the characters brilliantly. I've always liked Stephen King although he is not a great finisher of books (see The stand and It to name just two) so i'm hoping he gets this ending right. If you enjoyed Lord of the Rings (it's my favourite book by miles) or other epics like dune then you will love Dark Tower. It'll take you a while though, i've been reading the books for nearly two years!

just finished the first one took me 6 hours not bad.

Sounds like you will finish it all a little quicker then me then! I'm a teacher so i spend my whole bloody life reading,so books take a bit of a back seat. The first book is pretty poor compared to the rest. The 2nd book, 'The Drawing of the Three' (i think) is very good while the best one is called 'The Wolves of the Calla'.

I was very sceptical when i picked this book up (come from a science background, saw this as 'soft' science). But i must say, while i don't accept everything in the book, it has been very useful, especially in board rooms and when pushing through proposals.

Who should read it?
- Every single male on the planet (seriously, chicks have an innate advandtage over us, this book helps even the score)
- Any young lad in school and college (oh yeah)

Back to books. ' The damage done ' a true story about a guy called Warren Fellows, who got caught smuggling Heroin from Thailand to Australia.

F.ucking brilliant read, its only a short book I read it in two days about his time in a Thai prison, couldnt put the book down, gripping to say the least and quite sad at the end. BRILLIANT BOOK MUST READ IF HAVENT !!!

Reading a fantastic book at the moment called Air Mail by Terry Ravenscroft. This guy used to write material for loads of old school comedy shows from Morecambe & Wise to Not The Nine O'clock News. Then he started to write crank letters to airline companies and this book is made up of all of the correspondence conversations that he had with airlines across the world. It's brilliantly original and laugh out loud funny. From the 42 stone first time flyer to the man obsessed with stewardesses uniforms and the world class lasagne of Air2000, this book is endless fun. I recommend it most highly and you can get it at Waterstones in their 3 for 2 offer or cheap on the Amazon.co.uk marketplace.

Also, I have been reading the NEW Tolkien book. Be warned, if you expect the ease of LOTR, you will not find it in The Children Of Hurin. You have to remember that Tolkien was an English professor at Oxford and therefore liked to experiment with prose and language. This is much more like one of the olde oral folk tales that the Norse used to tell hundreds of years ago, such as Beowolf. It is a good read, but it would perhaps be better suited to being read aloud to a young child with a good IQ.

My favourite story about Tolkien is that when he was at Oxford he worked alongside CS Lewis (Narnia) who also taught English. The two used to proof read each other's work on numerous occasions. One day, Tolkien handed to Lewis the first draft of LOTR, and the very first thing that Lewis said was "Not another fukking elf." That might be a good way to think of The Children Of Hurin, a good read if you like experimental writing and an interesting case study on Northern Europe's early narratives, but not for everyone. By the end it though, you'll never want to read about fukking elves ever again.
