Would you give JAR a new contract?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Probably the most debatable out of all the players who are set to sign new contracts this summer. Finnan, Carra and Stevie are all set to sign but on JAR, I think he'll pretty much split opinion.

I mean I'm not the guy's biggest fan, especially as a defender but he's probably worthy of a new deal, if only for his versatility. I would think that Aurelio will be first choice next season, but if Riise is willing to stay then he should be given a new contract.

Ideally we'd probably want to be bringing in a new left back next season who's top quality defensively first and foremost but you have to wonder if that is really a priority, given our glaring shortcomings in other areas of the pitch.

Anyway, Riise. Deal or no deal?

Deal.

Like you said not the greatest defensively, but a handy versatile player who I wouldn't like to see in the opposition lineup. If somehow we do have enough money to strengthen the left back position after our other signings I might be inclined to let him go, but seeing as that's highly unlikely I say keep him for at least one more season.

Yes, I would.

There are not lots of LB in Europe, and some teams have aged players in that position or playing players out of his natural position.

Riise is a decent LB, and a good option for LM. He's versatile, he provides the long throw in (that's important aswell), he provides goals, he provides stamina, and he's rarely injured.

Vastly underrated player.

Keep him for his versatility and because we don't need to be adding LB to what's already going to be a significant shopping list this summer.  The lad sweats blood for LFC so re-signing him shouldn't be too tricky either.

I'd definitely keep Riise, there aren't many left backs with his talent and workrate in Europe.

IMO this is a stupid question.

JAR has been superb for us for a long time now and offers great balance down the left side of defence or midfield. If we were to get a player of equal or better quality in today's market and today's prices we'd be playing serious £££.

Absolutely 100% deal - no question.

Yeh, deal!

I guess he is not a quality player, but he has done well with us and gives a 100% commitment to the club.

John Arne Riise has admitted he dreams of linking up with his brother Bjorn Helge at Liverpool.

The duo played together for Norway in Saturday's win over Malta as Bjorn Helge made an impressive debut for his country setting up three goals in the 4-0 victory.

The two brothers are close and Reds defender Riise revealed he will try and engineer a move to Anfield for his younger brother.

"I will make my agent Struan Marshall aware of Bjorn Helge now," Riise told Dagbladet.no.

"The dream is that we both will play for the same club."

The younger Riise admits he would relish a move to England.

"To get to England I have to work hard in every training and play very good for Lillestrom," Bjorn Helge Riise told Dagbladet

"It's in Lillestrom I make the foundation for how good I can become as a player.

"If I do good for my club I will continue to do good for my country as well."

Well it is kind of related.

OSLO, Norway: Bjorn Helge Riise set up the first three goals with crosses from the right flank and Norway beat Malta 4-0 in a European Championship qualifier on Saturday.

Norway moved to 10 points in Group C and kept alive its chances to qualify for next year's championship. Malta has four points, also from six games.

Norway dominated the first half but had problems finishing off its chances and many Norwegian fans jeered as the home team left the field with a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The opening goal came in the 31st minute when unmarked Kristofer Hastad headed in Riise's cross from the far post. It was his first goal in 18 games for Norway.

Thorstein Helstad made it 2-0 in the 73rd minute, just one minute after coming on as a substitute. Riise set up unmarked Steffen Iversen for Norway's third goal only five minutes later.

Riise's brother, John Arne Riise, scored the last goal in the 90th minute.

Norway had plenty of other scoring chances in the second half, including a shot that hit the post by John Carew in the 51st.

Riise is proven in the premiership though. We'll be good enough to challenge for the title next season if we keep the backbone of the team and just add a couple of players in positions we're weak in (attack and the wings). Adriano is not that much better than Riise and we know that, on his day, the latter is a top player who has the right attitude towards playing for the club and is used to the premiership game.

Deal.
