Anyone got any idea what the hold up here is? Last I heard from my position here in A'dam was that he was seeing how the mgr situation was gonna work out? That looks ok, plus Stevie is staying...what else is there for the little fella?

More money?
Captaincy back?
Number 1 striker position in Rafis' eyes?
Exclusive super striker pants only to be worn by him?
etc etc?

Michael Owen will edge closer to signing an extension to his Liverpool contract this week when his agent arrives in America to conclude talks.

Tony Stephens will meet Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry to thrash out a deal during the club's pre-season tour of the USA, which kicks-off against Celtic in Hartford at 1am British time tomorrow morning.

Owen is ready to end speculation surrounding his future.

Talks began last May, but Euro 2004 and summer holidays meant negotations were put on hold.

Discussions about the length of Owen's contract have also been a factor.

The 24-year-old has one year left on his existing deal, and negotiations have focused on whether he will sign a two-year extension to this, taking his deal to the end of the 2006-7 season, or add just one more season to his current terms.

The Reds want the forward to sign until at least 2007, and that is the most likely outcome.

From the outset, Owen has made it clear he will never leave Anfield on a free transfer.

A one-year extension, taking his current deal until 2006, would allow him to assess the progress of the club under Rafael Benitez.

But his value would be significantly reduced if he was transferred next summer with only one year left on his deal rather than two.

Negotiations will continue this week and could be resolved swiftly as both parties are eager for the deal to be struck ahead of the Champions League qualifier on August 11.

Liverpool will hope to announce a deal when they return from America.
