Thailand's ex-PM flies to China

Mr Thaksin has been living in London since the coup
Thailand's ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra is in China - the first time he has left the UK since taking refuge there in the aftermath of September's coup.
He is rumoured to want to return to Thailand, but the new administration has said he is not yet welcome.

There is speculation that Mr Thaksin went to China to meet Thailand's new premier, Surayud Chulanont, who was attending a regional summit there.

But both Mr Surayud and a lawyer for Mr Thaksin denied a meeting took place.

Under investigation

Rumours that the former leader is holding negotiations to try to return to Thailand refuse to go away.

Last week Mr Thaksin's wife, Pojaman Shinawatra, met Prem Tinsulanonda, the top adviser to Thailand's revered king, in what reports suggest was an attempt to ease the way for her husband to fly back to Bangkok.

But Mr Thaksin's legal adviser, Noppadol Pattama, insisted his client had no immediate plans to return home.

"Thaksin is in Beijing to meet with friends. He just arrived a few hours ago, and that was after Prime Minister Surayud returned to Thailand," Mr Noppadol told reporters earlier on Thursday.

The former leader's family originally came from China.

Both the coup leaders and Gen Surayud's government have said Mr Thaksin will not be allowed to return to Thailand until the situation has become more stable.

Various investigations into Mr Thaksin's term in power are currently under way in Thailand. Two separate bodies are looking into corruption allegations involving his family and close government aides.

The guy has been ousted and has no chance of funding a purchase now.

Case Closed.

You've both missed the point of actually getting to a serious talk stage with the guy when any proper due diligence should have weeded him out at the first hurdle.

But thats ok........... :kungfu:

i think you guys are very unaware of what actually happened when thaksin tried to buy into liverpool.

it wasnt actually thaksin buying into the club personally, it was the thai government that would have bought into liverpool by way of a thai lottery.

thaksin however is a billionaire, this is money made from his communication business before he came to power in thailand, whilst in power he performed great things for the country, especially for the poor (the people of bangkok however are not interested in the poor in the north and south of thailand).

anyway thaksins family sold his company shin corp to temasek holdings (a singapore company), people complained because they said it would affect national security (shin corp also owned sattelites), and they complained that no tax was paid on the sale (thai law made before thaksin was PM says that notax needs to be paid on a deal of this type). this has been investigated and the only wongdoing appears to be on the side of temasek holdings who used nominees to buy shares. they have found no wrongdoing against thaksin or his family in this deal however they are still investigating.

they are also investigating thaksin promoting close aids to positions of power, he used to be a police man and the guys he went to police college with were promoted to higher positions, they are however proving that they had the ability and deserved the promotions. (who wouldnt surround themselves with allies?).

it seems at the moment in thailand the coup was bought about by mere speculation that thaksin was doing wrong as no proof is forcoming (and believe me they are searching). the coup leaders at the moment have a bit of egg on their faces trying to find proof.

also thakisn has stated that he will not return to thailand while its under martial law, the anti thaksin press are reading too much into things at the moment, his wife met with a guy called prem, he is an aide of the king and the press claimed she was trying to get favour to allow him back, however they are also just family friends.

also dont read too much into thaksin being in china, he is in fact of chinese descent, also its not the first time he has left the UK, last week he was in singapore.

the problem with thaksin is that he 'got things done', the new airport was talked about for 40 years, thaksin came into power and built it, he helped the farmers, he helped the taxi drivers and the hoi polloi didnt like this, he clamped down on drugs resulting in a few thousand dealers being shot and killed (mostly by other dealers although some were killed by police).

dont believe everything you read in the press guys. its not always true.
