Fickle - Stop the fickle calling

That's the whole point, though - change your opinion for a valid reason - no problem.

Say "So and so is brilliant" one week, then call for them to be dropped the next IS fickle.

It seems everyone in this thread is in agreement.

Nothing wrong with calling a spade a spade and criticizing the team when they play poorly (or the manager when he selects poorly), IMO.  That's not being fickle.  And, for what it's worth, I would never consider you a fickle fan, Peewee.

What gets on my t!ts are the over-the-top comments in the wake of a poor performance.  IMO, calling for Reina to be dropped is OTT.  He hasn't been immaculate this season but he's still our best keeper.  Dropping him shoots the team in the foot.  Ditto the 'drop Alonso' noise that seems to keep bubbling up round here, even though he's starting to play well.  Full-blooded venting, in the heat of the moment following a defeat is expected on this board and I just grit my teeth and get through it.  But, when it's a few days on and we still have people suggesting Dudek get a run of games or Bellamy play on the left, I lose patience.  I wouldn't call such reactions fickle, mind, just daft. :D

Fickle is to do with how fast fans change their opinion of a player over short periods.  It can be positive (e.g. fickle fans are now supporting Crouch and giving him perhaps more credit then he deserves when he deserved almost as much before), or it can be negative (e.g. Reina is getting a bit too much stick, while people seem to write-off what he did last season).  This behaviour shows a lack of football knowledge and bad character.  As the "best fans in the world" we should pride ourselves on being knowledgable supporters, and jumping on every band wagon that comes our way degrades the quality of this forum and pisses most of us off!

:veryangry

Nothing wrong with what Peewee is saying, as long as he provides his reasons he is entitled to his opinion.  Its very hard to tell if fans are fickle on this site unless they are constantly giving their opinion on the matter.  I would only call a fan fickle if I remember them stating something and changing in too short a time frame

^From the Reina thread.

People like to use this word because it is not only a insult to someones knowledge of football, its questioning someone's support of the club.

Fickle can only be used if people make dramatic changes in their opinion based on too short a time frame.  Unless someone is going to extract a quote from Peewee saying anything other then what he said in that thread then i think that someone deserves an apology

I think I've gone off you, Judge, and it was only yesterday that I liked you!    :D

(Ok, you could say that 'I have taken the bait' as it were, but I feel compelled to reply to your most UNFAIR outburst!...lol.)

I beg to differ. Some of the men I've known have been very fickle. Also, I think you will find that the posts Pee Wee is referring to are all posts BY MEN.
I rest my case (probably because I can't think of anything else to say   :D ).
We all know that it is women that really keep things running smoothly and without us men would crumble.
MEN ARE FICKLE - you never know where you are with any of them!

Anyways, I'm glad I've sorted that out for everyone!    :wwww

i dont need an apology mate to be honest, its just ironic that people call some of us fickle and then accuse us of jumping on a bandwagon when we win, whilst at the same time taking up the mantle of calling us fickle when one poster first mentions the word fickle, and therefore jumping on the fickle calling bandwagon

It's a case of most of thise calling for Rafa to drop Reina are the same ones who were calling him the best 'keeper in the league a few weeks back.

That, I think you will find, is a direct example of someone being "fickle."

I agree, to many people change there opinions week to week and dont seem to remeber past performances.

I think Riena is a great goalkeeper (Hense the name) but he has made a few mistakes no one can deny that, however he has come back and not dwelled upon those mistakes and turned in better performances. The sign of a great goalkeeper especially so in  one so young (23 is young for a keeper) is the ability to not let mistakes affect their confidence.

Every goalkeeper will make a mistake at some point, but if they let it bother them then they will be constantly looking not to make the same mistake again which will lead to them making different ones and loosing even more confidence.

Classic example Dudek: Made mistakes then became reluctant to come to claim/punch balls and then seemed to look out of position for certain goals.

If a goalkeeper doesnt let his mistakes effect his game it leaves him free from the burden and allows him to keep his mind on the game.

Classic example Reina in the FA fianl, cocked up for the second,  dupped for the third, but still saved the penalties, and made a world class save in the final minutes of extra time.

Also if the goalkeeper looses confidence it will show, then this will make the defence loose confidence in the goalkeepers ability and judgement and then may make them make strange desisions in order to "protect the goalkeeper" (i.e. Covering the wrong player, closing down on the wing rather than marking in the centre etc.) which will probably lead to leaked goals.

In my opinion Reina is a more mentally strong goalkeeper who will only get better with age, and a mentally strong and confident goalkeeper makes for a confident organised defence.

This is my opinion anyway.
