Why we can't score goals !

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

When i see that Fernando morientes is exceling with Fc Valencia when i see Crouch excelling with England team and Baros also with Aston Villa i wonder why all these players were not good enought with our team why we are failing to score goals !! i think that the problem in LFC is not the names and quality of strikers but the problem seems to be in the midfield or in the use of the appropriate midfield players by Rafa
that's the way i see it ! Do you agree with me?

Morientes didn't settle that's why he didn't excel.
Crouch has been scoring for both Liverpool and England.
Baros scored fewer than Crouch last year didn't he at Villa?

The truth why we don't score is because of tactics. Take the PSV game for example. If you are playing Kuyt and Bellamy you need to have Gerrard on as well. Bellamy goes out to the wing and Kuyt drops deep so you need a midfielder like Gerrard bombing through the middle. It's the same as Crouch. He drops deep so you need someone from midfield running on beyond him for his nock downs. Fowler is happy to stay in the box but then you need on running midfielders to be clever enough to play the ball into him.

Morientes came to the wrong club, in the wrong league, if he came back tomorrow I dont think he would fare much better than last time.

Liverpool have never been setup to be an attacking force since Houlliers arrival.

Thats not to say we have played defensive football but we dont get enough bodies in the box,and too many of our goals are edge of the area wondergoals rather than 2 yard tap ins.

Our forwards dont have the distraction of 5 players charging into the box as you see with the mancs. Scoring goals has been hard work for the forwards at Liverpool, but then again scoring goals against us has been hard too.

I believe Rafa is trying to change the balance, both with the players he has bought, and the way we play, to be more open and more of a goal threat, but we need to get players into the penalty box if we are going to become prolific scorers.

I would like to see us scoring a greater number of goals rather than great goals (I like them too )but still keep a strong defense.

were having a bad run like teams always do. You have to remeber we have had some difficult games so far.

I think we will come out of it.

under rafa we will never have a 30 goal scorer. but on the other hand we won't let many in. its what you want. do you want the roy evans team that scored in bunches but unfortunately mr james let them in faster? ???

I think this is an interesting thread, it touches an issue that is on my mind from a while ago.

We discussed thoroughly about Morientes last year. In fact, every single striker of the squad was questioned at some point of the season:

In a nutshell

Morientes: Either he wasn't good enough or he was in the wrong league (also that he lacked pace, he look depressed and a lot of things)

Crouch: He wasn't an out and out scorer, he had a terrible drought without scoring goals and some people said he even wasn't a striker

Fowler: "Past his best", aging and lot of comments more

Cisse: Well, tons of things were said about Cisse too.

------

I think right now Bellamy is under the protection of the patience that fans usually have when a signing up come. I'm happy with the guy, but many people are praising him big time. I do think though, that if a month later he doesn't score or scores just a goal, there will appear Bellamy shlashers here and there, and some of those slashers are probably praising him now! :)

Kuyt seems pretty impressive, but again, if he doesn't score a fair amount of goals, there will be people that say that he's not a real finisher really.

But it is a fair question: perhaps it wasn't / is a striker quality problem?

Saint admits that

Thats not to say we have played defensive football but we dont get enough bodies in the box,and too many of our goals are edge of the area wondergoals rather than 2 yard tap ins.

And I agree that. And I think that sometimes is a problem. I commented last season that so many times we end up the plays too early with a shot, or want to do the deffinitive pass too soon. That we have the quality to have a better use of the possession and we should do so. I think that making long rage goals or wonder goals is a good option, but it's not if you always want to finish the plays that way. A few tap in goals, are ok in my book. Ellaborated plays, that won't try the impossible flick of Luis Garcia, or the marvellous pass of Gerrard, and instead use the wings properly to put good crosses. I think we must build up our game more patiently. I don't mean with low rythm, I'm talking about making a wiser pass sometimes.

I think that in Benfica games and some other games we only drew instead of winning because we hadn't that patience.

Rant over.

I think we'd like to see other players weighing in with a few goals this season, the tactics referred to in the above posts seem to indicate that our midfielders should score more.... Obviously Stevie cannot be faulted for his return but Xabi really ought to get more than he does, Luis could be a little more prolific also, that's not to say I don't appreciate the vital goals he's notched in the past but I'd like to see a player of his undoubted scoring talent get near the 12 goal mark for the season....

On Morientes, I can't help but think how he would have fared now we've got Pennant, Gonzalez and Aurelio whipping in crosses left and right... :Oo:

If I eventually read a "bring back Morientes" from one of you, I'm going to fall from my chair!  :)

People who say Kuyt doesn't score goals or isn't a 'finisher' are just plain wrong. His goal scoring record in Holland is immense.

I think its approx 70 goals in 100 matches!

The balance isnt right yet, and these new players where obviously brought in to make the tactics Rafa has in his mind work.
Our new players seem far more fitter, far more agile, and more athletic.
We have new dormatorys at Melwood now for midday siesta's morning training, eat then to bed then back training.
Not like seasons before when its just been training in the morning then the rest of the day off.

The same tactics where used when Crouch could'nt score for 19 games and Morientes was deamed a failure, it wasnt that they could'nt score it was just the way that we set out to play.

With Kuyt and Bellamy more agile and less static than Crouch and Morientes.
Maybe these tactics will work.
Or maybe not and if they dont then its back to the drawing board.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.
