Two goals or not two goals - That is the question

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

So last night we scored two goals and, surprise suprise, won. So I had a quick look back at our Premiership record and that of the respective champions when scoring two goals or more. This season we've scored 2+ league goals in 10 games, P10 W8 D2 L0, losing all but one of the rest of our games where we've not scored 2+ goals

08/09

Liverpool P23 W21 D2 L0 PTS 65
Man Utd P18 W18 D0 L0 PTS 54

07/08

Liverpool P21 W18 D3 L0 PTS 57
Man Utd P22 W20 D2 L0 PTS 62

06/07

Liverpool P19 W18 D1 L0 PTS 55
Man Utd P25 W24 D1 L0 PTS 73

05/06

Liverpool P17 W15 D2 L0 PTS 47
Chelsea P24 W24 D0 L0 PTS 72

04/05

Liverpool P17 W15 D2 L0 PTS 47
Chelsea P20 W18 D2 L0 PTS 56

So neither we, nor the Champions, have lost a game we've scored 2+ goals in in any of the last SIX seasons including this one. We have scored 2+ goals 10 times this season, but seven times we haven't and haven't won a single league game (1-0 the only option) - P7 W0 D1 L6

So let's start scoring a bit more freely, Europe was pathetic in that regard as we didn't once in SIX games score more than one goal. We've scored only 12 goals in our last 10 league games, mirrored by 12 points in our last 10 league games (not much better than relegation form)

Have you absolutely nothing else to do other than generate meaningless statistics ? I mean, statistically speaking, when is the last time you got yer Nat King ? :D

I'm not sure the stats are "meaningless" or whether they deserve the derision which posting up a cartoon amounts to. The point they make is a sensible one, in that attacking football in the Premiership is generally rewarded. Only those with the most miserly of defences, those who defend set-pieces scrupulously well should be trying to see out 1-0 wins on a regular basis. We know from our own memories that the time when we looked at our best under Rafa we attacked with gusto and to hell with the consequences. That's what the stats tell you, simple really.

It's not easy to score two goals when you've got a dodgy defense/midfield.
