For the past two years, Rafa has been working with limited resources. But now he has what he needs - two players for every position. On top of that, most of the squad can occupy several positions.
We saw Rafa field a 3-4-3 formation last year against Newcastle which paid dividends. I think this will be used more this year. But the basis of our assault on the league will be a 4-4-2 formation.
Rafa has never fielded a 4-3-3 formation, due to the nature of our squad, and it will be interesting to see whether he experiments with this during the season, now that we have Pennant and Gonzalez.
I'm getting quite excited about the upcoming season. The permutations of this squad are endless.

4-4-2
                                     REINA
   FINNAN            CARRA               HYYPIA           RIISE
   GERRARD          MOMO               ALONSO        GONZO
                             BELLAMY    KUYT

4-3-3
                                REINA
FINNAN          CARRA             AGGER          AURELIO
         GERRARD          ALONSO         MOMO
       PENNANT                                KEWELL
                               FOWLER

3-5-2
                               REINA
              CARRA        HYYPIA    PALLETA
FINNAN       GERRARD         ALONSO        WARNOCK
                              GARCIA
                    CROUCH        BELLAMY

3-4-3
                               REINA
                 CARRA      AGGER     HYYPIA
KROMKAMP    MOMO          ALONSO           RIISE
               BELLAMY   KUYT     FOWLER

Is anybody else wetting theirselves?

No but I've got wood!!!  :D

I hope we will stick to our best eleven as much as possible because we have many new players and they need time to gel. Therefore, if changing too much too often it would be difficult for everyone to adapt and not just the new players but the whole team. But just thinking of the depth we have, it is going to be an amazing season. Also, most of the players are young and full of potential. I'm sure these players are going to be the next new wave of stars for LFC. I think there isn't any weakness in our team now. But we could surely get another RM with speed just to cover. :buttrock:

Of course we can afford to play Gerrard in RM position. He played brilliantly in that position against Greece too. Enough to prove that he is comfortable in that position. Also, now we have enough players to handle the midfield IMO.

I prefer Gerrard right midfield because he doesnt stay wide but is intelligent enough to know when to drift inside as well. Especially now we have Bellamy who uses the channels very well, I think this will create some real problems for opposing defences.

Yes I know I'm getting a little bit greedy.  :p

Now just hope Diao will be gone soon.

I agree that yes he does know when to drift into the center but my real wonderment is will he be as effective i.e be able to get his wonder shots off as much as he would playing in the centre

Yes, this is also a concern because his last min. rippers have won some important games for us and chances of this happening in the future will be slim if he plays in RM.

If we're playing 4-4-2, I reckon this is our best line-up

                 Reina

Finnan    Carra  Hyypia  Aurelio

StevieG  Xabi    Momo   Riise/Gonzalez

            Fowler  Crouch/Kuyt

If 4-5-1 then

                Reina

Finnan    Carra    Hyypia  Aurelio

                   Momo*

Pennant  StevieG  Xabi  Gonzalez/Riise

                    Luis*

              Crouch/Kuyt

* Depending on who we play either Luis or Momo

3-5-2....

                          Reina

               Carra  Hyypia  Agger

Pennant    StevieG  Momo  Xabi   Gonzalez/Riise

                  Fowler  Crouch/Kuyt

my thoughts anyway.....

I'm so glad it's not me picking the team. We have so much quality in our squad now that it will be near impossible to keep all the players happy, definetely a good problem though considering Rafa's squad rotation system.

ConnO'var, you forget about Bellamy in the strikeforce?
4-4-2
Reina
Finnan  Carra  Hyypia (Agger)  Aurelio (Riise)
Stevie G    Momo   Alonso    Gonzo  (Kewell)
                  Bellamy(fowler)   Kuyt (Crouch)
3-5-2
Reina
Finnan      Carra       Riise (Aurelio)
         Momo  Alonso
Pennant                   Gonzo
              Stevie G (Garcia)
    Bellamy   Kuyt (Crouch)

I think the 3-5-2 allows us to put our most talented squad on the pitch.  It allows Pennany to play wide, Stevie to play forward and cover wherever he feels like going, Momo, to make tackles all over the pitch, Xabi to send in long passes, and if we play aurelio and gonzo on the left we have a very attack minded pacy left side, plus Kuyt and Bellamy to put everything in the net.  It is sad that the likes of fowler and garcia, and possibly pennant if Gerrard plays RM, will rarely see time on the pitch, but it is a testament to how much talent and depth the team has which will come into play as the season progresses.  Almost more dissapointed in how there will be even less time for some of the young stars to see the pitch, even the reserve team games should be exciting to watch.

Looks like Fowlers not going to play much this season, as Bellamy Crouch and Kuyt will all get the nod of Robbie. I expect him to get a bit part role this season, coming off the bench mostly.

i can see us playing crouch upfront by himself in away matches and linking him with pace on the wings, gonzo and pennant and stevie g in a 5 man midfield, possibly bellamy replacing pennant now and then. in europe too we may do the same but replace crouch with bellamy. at home i'm guessing kuyt/fowler may get more of a run out in a traditional 4-4-2. either way i think rafa will change formation as necessary, newcastle away last season is a great example of how to catch the opposition out. what a manager and now what a squad, very competitive and very hungry with competition all over and lots of options re formation - we have a real shot in every competition we're playing in this year.
