Rooney - How much game time

International Football/Football World Wide - General Discussion

I think most people would agree that England have little chance of winning the cup if Rooney isn't fit and sharp when the crunch games at the "business end" of the tournament are on. I think Sweden dropping points is a godsend for Sven as it means he can give Rooney more time on the pitch even if somebody else is better equiped right now to play.

I'd start him against Trinidad and if he is ok at half time play him for another 15 minutes. England should be able to win that game if Rooney has little to offer at this moment.

Then there is no pressure against Sweden and I'd start him again and give him 70 mins or so.

Even if he has no match fitness and contributes  little - running around and getting a few touches here and there will benefit him. How often in the WC do you get two low pressure games in a row?
