Morientes - Misses out on spain squad

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Just seen that Mori hasn't made it into the Spanish provisional squad.

IMO he hasn't done enough for LFC, and Aragones has got it spot on. Having said that though, neither has Raul this season, and he's still going.

Your thoughts anyone?

can't disagree with you.  The final (for me at least) was his last chance and he still looked off the pace and out of the game.  Hopefully (with his reputation in Spain still quite high) we can get 3 million back or use him as a make weight in a trade.  Sadly its not worked out.

I am not in teh slightest bit surprised, his form has been awful for 2 seasons now, i was surprised that he was getting in the squad in the qualifiers when he was so poor for us.
The only downside in him not being picked is that it might of put a bit of extra value on him if he managed to have a decent tournament.

I'm outraged. Spain is going to Germany with 3 strikers, Raul, Torres, and Villa. Only the latter is a proper striker.

Raul has been out months, and he hasn't recovered his best games (not that he had it before the injury) yet he's still going. In the last minute Aragones decided to pick another defence, it's not that some other striker goes instead of Morientes. Aragones has defended his choice saying that Luis Garcia and Reyes can play as a second striker, yet I don't agree the decission.

Some thing people must be aware of, is that the typical Spaniard game plays FOR the strikers, unlike Liverpool's nowadays game in which Strikers work for the team. The work that both Crouch, Morientes and Fowler does for the team is as huge as not acknowledged :(

I'm gutted for Mori. I wish he went there, because I truly trust him and because of course, in case we have to sell him, he would be more worthy if he went to Germany.

It's cases such as Raul's the one that I can't stand. It takes ages to acknowledge in my country a new star, and it takes ages to stop using players in decline.

Surpised. Morientes has always produced the goods for Spain despite not producing it for us.

It's a joke that Raul gets to go.

Slightly surprised he's been left out to be honest.  Although his performances for us don't really warrant a call-up, he always looks better in the Spanish side.  Clearly the guy is a quality player and playing in a side that plays to his strengths he is still capable of being very effective, unfortunately for us, Liverpool and English football just don't suit him.

I take it Garcia's in? I suppose he'd be used in a supportive role, like he is for us, so maybe a more defensive Spain this year?

Sabre are there any other forwards that you would of taken ?

I would of thought Spain could pick a player in better form than Morientes and Raul, neither has performed for ages now for one reason or another.

I agree nando might be better suited to playing for his national side but if a player is so obviously out of form then i wouldnt of taken him.
I would rather play Reyes centrally the lad has always impressed me, and he offers alot more to morientes imo.

Agree with that, Spain will do sweet F.All in Germany, They are a threat when Morientes is playing with Raul, minus that and they're average up top. I'll be surprised if they make it to QF's.

Plus Torres and Villa have no experience at the biggest stage of them all, where as Morientes does.

Spain always seem to have a great squad but choke at every oportune moment.

Spain have one of the easiest groups and will definately come through it.
They are notorious for under achieving but this year they aren't bein given a chance by most pundits that should help them.
I know sabre is disappoined but i dont think the forward line is as bad as people are making out.
Villa has had an unbelievable season and Torres although somethink is overrated, he is still a dangerous player that will score goals, then you have Raul, he looks like he's had enough and is close to retirement (a shade of the player he was imo) and then there is reyes garcia and joaquin, not too bad, and players capable of causing problems for any nation.
