Have we started taking things for granted?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Lol Sabes - yes, I'm sure the '90's were a period that we'd all like to remember for more success.  Unfortunately (or furtunately depending on how you look at it), my earliest memories as a fan stem from the 76/77 season and for the immediate 10 years following that we were "THE" team, winning 8 league titles virtually on the trot. Hence, the whole time I was playing junior/youth football from U8's to U17's it was us that did the laughing at the other team's supporter's plight and not the other way around.

And so, my belief system was built around LFC success and Liverpool as undeniable champions and the best team in Europe was/is not just an expectation, it is the way things are meant to be!

My first LFC memory is a joke.

Literally.

It was an old bantering joke that RS fans made to Bilbao fans and Viceversa, concerning that Bilbao players put the men in the barrier looking towards their own goalie. And then asked by the journalist why they did that they answered that "just for once Liverpool comes, I don't want to miss it". Stupid joke, but might give you an idea of what Liverpool was in 1981. I was 6.

And the thing we disagree is that "that's what is meant to be". No, LFC was great, in times that being great was a matter of being a great football club. And since LFC was a great football club, LFC was great. But we're in times now, that started in the mid eighties in which loads of money of different sources (legal, and illegal) are in football, and you can put with money a team with no past like Villareal or Chelsea, in the place that was occupying Nottingham Forest in the past: Europe appearances.

And those are not easy times for classic football teams like Liverpool, if we think that we win because we're reds, then we're going to have lots of dissapointments in the future.

We have won the fifth one, because we have done things extremely well. For me, reaching the semifinal was good enough already to put Liverpool's name where it should be. And because we're doing a good work, we're in a decent EPL position. Rafa even has learnt that in England the CUp is a more serious thing than in Spain, and has taken it seriously with his line ups this year.

My point is that we're making a big mistake if we think success is coming because it's meant to come. No, success comes when things are well done.

I was thinking yesterday how nice it would be to see us stick 3 or 4 past City, if only to be able to enjoy the last 10 minutes without worrying about the injustice of the opposition grabbing an equaliser after Traore came on.  :D

However, fantasising about winning by a bigger margin shows how far we have come this season. For the last 2 or 3 years, any f**king victory was to be welcomed. Would always take 4-0 over 1-0, but I'm not complaining.

No .
Liverpool FC the champions of Europe (yet again), deserve to be back at footballs top table .That may sound arrogant to some but to me it's just plain fact . AC Milan ,Bayern Munich , Barcalona, Real Madrid and even Manchester United, is it arrogant of their fans to EXPECT their team to be at the top and winning things ? of course not .As clubs they are football giants AND SO ARE WE ! Perhaps it's been to long for some to remember how LFC put the fear of god into every team that ever had to face us ,but certainly under Benitez we are regaining the respect that was once our due.

Speaking for myself , asking for more from a team that has performed so well this past year is not arrogant or "taking things for granted" ,it's just the natural reaction of a supporter who see's a very very good Liverpool side not far away from becoming once again a great one .

The clamour in recent threads primarily about our failure to put more than the odd goal past teams is not "arrogance" it's justified frustration . Nobody expects us to thrash Chelsea , Man  U etc but it is not unreasonable of some fans given the quality of our play in recent games to bemoan the fact that our superiority in some games has not been reflected in the scoreline.

Walk On   :kungfu:
