Rick Parry today insisted Momo Sissoko is receiving the best care possible as the Reds wait to discover the extent of the midfielder's eye injury.
Sissoko flew back from Portugal yesterday and is currently being looked after by eye specialists in London.

The Mali midfielder sustained the injury after Beto's boot caught him in the face during the first half of the Reds' Champions League defeat to Benfica.

"We don't want to sound too pessimistic because it's too early to tell. What Momo needs right now is our support and the best care he can get," said Parry today.

"His right eye is closed down and it's been difficult to assess the damage because of the swelling and bleeding.

"However, it's too early to jump to conclusions. Obviously this is a very traumatic time for Momo and the club is in constant contact with his family and representatives. It's a very nasty injury.

"He's now in London being treated by the best specialists in the country."

I SUFFERED SISSOKO EYE INJURY

Mirror.co.uk's Chief Reporter Ben Rankin sends a message to Liverpool's Sissoko - you can come back from eye injury.
THE ANGUISH on Mohammed Sissoko’s face as he was stretchered off the pitch on Tuesday night brought it all back - just under a year ago I suffered a very similar eye injury in a freak footballing accident.

Like the Liverpool midfielder, my retina had been badly damaged and I stumbled out of a football match with the horrific sense of not being able to see through my left eye.

I had been struck in the face by a bullet-shot from, of all people, a team-mate.

The force of the blow knocked me off my feet and when I was eventually hauled up I realised I was blinded.

One second I had excellent vision, the next I couldn’t see two fingers held up just a few centimetres away from my face. It was as if a white curtain had been pulled across my eye.

There was no stretcher to take me off the pitch, though, and no doctors on stand-by to assure me everything would be okay.

The football I was playing – a friendly, but competitive, kick-about in north London - was a million miles away from the glamour of the Champions League.

A taxi took me to my local hospital and several hours later I was told the grim news – I needed urgent surgery or I’d lose my sight.

It was only then the seriousness of what had happened sunk in. I’d always taken my vision for granted and the possibility of having it snatched away in such bizarre circumstances seemed unreal.

My split retina was operated on the following morning and again two days later after the first attempt to repair it failed. I needed three weeks off work for the surgery and subsequent recovery.

The healing process has lasted months and has involved more surgery and heartache.

But the good news is that my sight has been saved - even though it'll never be what it was.

And now I’ve just been told that I CAN play football again - a fact I couldn't take for granted. I’ll settle for that. So, I hope, will Sissoko

I certainly think it's far too early to tell. Puts the game on Tuesday (and our season) into perspective. Sometimes football is not the be-all and end-all.

Iam portuguese and benfica supporter. I´am here to wish good luck to sissoko. He is a young player with the best moments in the future..

I wasn't talking about you or your coments. I was pi55ed off and annoyed about the Momo situation and was trying to express my didstaste in the most abrupt and succinct manner. To reiterate my views: Bollox.

Beto did raise his foot TOO high, but going after him is not one of my priorities at the moment. I'm far more concerned about Momo and his condition.

Parry: Too early to make call on Sissoko

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has moved to try to ease concerns over Mohamed Sissoko after a Portuguese medic suggested his vision could be severely compromised.

Sissoko flew back from Portugal yesterday following an overnight stay in hospital after a kick in the head by Brazilian midfielder Beto in 1-0 Champions League defeat to Benfica forced him off in the first half.

The Mali international suffered damage to the retina in his right eye and is currently being cared for by specialists in London.

Parry said it was too early to say what the extent of the problem was even though Joao Paco, clinical director of the hospital which treated Sissoko in Lisbon, said his vision could be compromised by up to 80%.

“We don’t want to sound too pessimistic because it’s too early to tell,” Parry told the club’s website, www.liverpoolfc.tv.

The 21-year-old Sissoko, complaining of blurred vision, was left behind in Lisbon on Tuesday night while the team returned home.

Paco had earlier said: “The prognosis is guarded but vision is going to be compromised on the right side, it may be 80 or 20%, but we can’t say yet. He suffered trauma with bruising to the eye but there was no apparent destruction of the structure.”

Liverpool Football Club have today reported an improvement in Momo Sissoko's condition as he recovers in hospital from a serious eye injury.
The Reds' midfielder is being cared for by top eye specialists following the injury he sustained in Portugal on Tuesday night.

A statement released by the club on Thursday afternoon reads as follows:

"We are glad to report there has been an improvement in Momo's condition over the past 24 hours, with the progress described as 'encouraging'.

"The player was examined this morning by a leading eye specialist who remains optimistic, despite reports emanating from Lisbon.

"Momo has been instructed to rest completely and will be examined again by the specialist next week."

Thats good news. I wasn't believing what was coming out of Potugal as it will have grown arms and legs by the time it reaches this forum.
