The support at the stadium... - Not good enough.

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby supersub » Tue Apr 20, 2004 10:25 pm

JBG I have to side with you on this one.The atmosphere at Anfield has been on a steady decline for more than a decade, with occassional great nights or the odd afternoon, appearing once and a while. Many of the fans who gourged themselves on regular success, like myself, became complacent in our attitude towards the game. The Kop was a vibrant, awesome standing area, but I noticed soon after the the first couple of European Cup successes the crowd became a viewing audience rather than a participating throng.I put it down to the fact that the fans were becoming complacent, the audience was getting older as the prices increased and then all seater  stadiums appeared and the days of the SINGING,SWAYING KOP WERE GONE FOREVER.I'm in my forties now,I still wear a Liverpool shirt to every game,I don't have a silk scarf attached to my wrist,I do sing "You'll Never Walk Alone" with a tear in my eye,I don't believe it's the fans that win you games, leagues and cups but the players and the way those players are instructed and guided on how to play the game.
THERE'S A GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL TOMORROW SHINING AT THE END OF EVERY DAY.
THERE'S A GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL TOMORROW AND TOMORROW IS JUST A DREAM AWAY.

I did not mention in my post that I thought that fans or good atmospheres win games or the league, my post put across that in my opinion the fans could do more to get behind the team.

As previosly stated the buck for us being meiocre of late stops with the board and management.

If we as fans can help the lads by showing our support, I am all for it. Are you guys not the same? Would you not do all in your power to make us great again?

In all honesty our powers will always be to support, and very little else unless we own redrow homes that is. This means we should back the club, and if that means singing the name of an underacheiving player to bolster their confidence and encourage them to play better so be it.

BUILD IT AND HE WILL COME

how can anyone expect the fans to sing for the most boring team in england. Were human beings! most people only feel like singing when the team is at least showing an effort and putting in a good performance which rarely happens at anfield these days. And whats all this s##t about out of towners not supporting propperly, Old trafford always has a great atmosphere and there are about 10 man u fans from manchester!

Exactly! We have done enough singing and supporting the team, it is time for the team to repay our faith and deliver and lift the Premiership title

You going the game on Saturday? Didnt think so.

I have been to the theatre of penalties for the last six years on the bounce, and they dont have an atmosphere there. A select few in the corner sing, but no great shakes. even when the ref sent Sami off after five seconds last year and they scored a few they all f##ked off early to get the train in time.

So you say you wont sing at Anfield until the team gives you something to sing about? Dont bother going then you idiot. 18 league titles, four European Cups the joy of Kenny Dalglish, the pain of scouser tommy and the feilds of Anfield road, do I need to go on.

"When you walk, thru the storm, hold your head up high", famous words immortalised by the Kop and copied by many.

It doesnt read " When you walk thru a small rain shower, boo jeer and dont support the club you love.

True right I am not going, I wont watch a game again until we sack Houllier and bring in a top class manager and start spending money on decent players and not going for the cheap option everytime.
If we keep Houllier this summer it will prove me right In my claim that our board has no intentions of challlenging for the title and if Liverpool dont have those intentions there is no point in even having a football club

I wholeheartedly support your sentiments regarding a change of manager, but saying you wont support the team until the board changes its mind, you remind me of a child cutting their nose off to spite their face.

Go the game, give your support and then at the time of reckoning, you can say you gave your all for the cause.

On the subject of this thread "The Support At the stadium" its a classic chicken and Egg scenario....do we sing and cheer FIRST or wait until the players play well enough for us to sing cheer ? I'm with Leon Mc in that the 6 Away games i've been this season from a  supporting point of view have far exceeded aything I've heard at Anfield and that includes the Man U home game which was pathetic this season. I might add of those Away games I've seen us lose 2 , Draw 3 and only win ONCE !!!!!! So obviously the AWAY fans dont see the result as being an indicator of whether they shoud sing and support or not, strangely just the HOME support it would appear ???

I don't believe loud fans get the team a single point, Sunderland had great support and got relegated as have Man City. if the team is s##t - you lose.

I used to go Anfield a lot when Evans was manager- the team weren't great so I'm not a glory hunter but they played exciting football and even when we lost it had been an entertaining game.

I cancelled a few trips this year as I'm bored out of my mind watching Houlliers millionaires lump the ball 50 metres up to that f##king donkey Heskey.

Its not instant success we're after but a bit of quality football.

The problem has been there at Anfield for a while but the disasterous anf boring football that we have seen for the past 2 years have really left a lot of people discontented and annoyed.

I was trying to point out the Newcastle home game of 2001 because even though we won that game comfortably, the atmosphere was subdued, so I don't know how much of a factor the current situation with the crowd has to do with the team's fortunes. It has an effect and I agree with Stu here, but its not the cause of the problem.

Our home form has never been hectic under Houllier and the main reason for this is simply the way he sends out the team at Anfield. On Fulham last week we rarely got bodies into the Fulham half, and under Houllier too many players are held back as "safety first".

find it incredible that big Niall thinks support doesn't gain a single point !!!!!!!! Shanks once said the kop was worth a goal start each ganme they played at Anfield. Maybe I'm of the old guard who happen to believe my main job is to SUPPORT , i suppose thats why they call us Supporters ??? I find it difficult NOT to sing and shout for my beloved Liverpool to be honest and no i'm not one of those fans berating others who choose not to but come on lads ......what have you got left if you can't have a sing and cheer your team ? I appreciate it has been hard this season but as Leon Mc pointed out the AWAY fans dont seem to have a problem getting behind the team.......???

Players and commentators alike reffered to Anfield as a fortress, but this was not only aimed at the players and results, this extended to the crowd and in particular the Kop.

I think it was Brian Clough who once said that he was sure that the Kop used to suck the ball into the net when he took his Forest teams there thru the 70's/80s.

I dont beleive that the crowd are in any way responsible for the inadequecies of our players, but I do think they could do more to get behind the boys.

If not to support Houllier, then just for PRIDE. Dont lets have Mancs, Cockney w#nk##s or Leeds Scum outsinging us in our own backyard, and lets not have people from slums like Newcastle and Birmingham outsinging us with their own version of YNWA refering to signing on and never getting jobs.

Having Pride in your team does not mean you back the Manager........

I AM A LIVERPUDLIAN, AND I COME FROM THE SPION KOP, I LIKE TO SING AND I LIKE TO SHOUT, I GO THERE QUITE A LOT, SUPPORT A TEAM THAT PLAYS IN RED, A TEAM THAT WE ALL KNOW, A TEAM THAT WE CALL LIVERPOOL AND TO GLORY WE WILL GO.
WEVE WON THE LEAGUE, WEVE WON THE CUP, WEVE BEEN TO EUROPE TOO, WE PLAY THE TOFFEES FOR A LAUGH AND LEFT THEM FEELING BLUE. FIVE NIL.
