Record-breaking Liverpool into World Club Championships final
Thu 15 Dec

YOKOHAMA, Japan (AFP) - Liverpool have overwhelmed Deportivo Saprissa 3-0 to book a place in the final of the World Club Championhips and extend their winning streak to eight games and a record 11 clean sheets.

A brace from Peter Crouch and a stunning Steven Gerrard volley Thursday shattered any dreams the Purple Monsters, as the CONCACAF winners are known, had of playing against South American champions Sao Paulo on Sunday.

The win gave The Reds 11 clean sheets, beating the record dating back to the 1987-88 season when Bruce Grobbelaar and his team-mates, who were managed by Kenny Dalglish, went on a title-winning run in the old English First Division.

Fueled by a desire to set the new mark and win the only trophy to elude them in their 113-year history, Liverpool scored the first goal after just three minutes.

Crouch started and finished the move, laying off to John Arne Risse whose cross from the left was knocked down by Djibril Cisse into the path of the former Southampton striker who half-volleyed it past goalkeeper Jose Porras.

Gerrard made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute with a cracking volley from just inside the box after Risse found him unmarked with a beautifully weighted cross.

Crouch put it beyond doubt 13 minutes into the second half when he shook off two defenders to stab home his second of the night and the fourth of his Liverpool career, leaving his barren run well and truly behind.

There were no signs of the jet-lag that some people predicted would affect Liverpool's game as the European champions produced some exhibition football in front of 43,000 fans that should have produced more goals.

Spearheaded by Cisse, who made a rare start after seemingly settling his differences with manager Rafael Benitez, Liverpool split Saprissa's defence wide open time and again.

Crouch fluffed a half-chance in the 16th minute and had a penalty shout turned down soon after, while Risse should have scored with a free header midway through the first half.

But to the credit of the Costa Rican side, playing their biggest ever match, they troubled Liverpool on the break.

Alvaro Saborio had a great opportunity to score in the 27th minute when he latched onto a long ball over the top only to fire his shot past the upright, while Christian Bolanos and Walter Centeno both went close in the second half.

Benitez has made clear the trip to Japan is not a commercial exercise but an opportunity to bring home silverware and boost confidence going into the second half of the season, and on this form Sao Paulo will struggle on Sunday.

i thought this was a good read :)

"Historic triumphs like these are part of the reason the Tricolores are considered to be one of the leading club sides in the world. Their phenomenal trophy haul, which includes 21 Paulista Championships and three Brazilian National Championships (1977, 1986 and 1991), has also made them one of the most popular clubs in the home of the Pentacampeão.

Though consistently a force in international football, many consider that the club's golden era was in the early 90s, when legendary coach Telé Santana was at the helm. A staunch defender of attacking football and the jogo bonito , Santana's tenure at the club coincided with that of such luminaries as Zetti, Cafú, Muller, Antonio Carlos and Raí, and together they set about writing the most glorious chapter in the club's long history. From 1990 until 1995, when the Brazilian-born coach was forced to retire with health problems, the Paulistas swept all before them on both the home and international front."

This is a litte part of Fifa commennts about Sao Paulo

Win the best!

Here's a bit of useless info for you, I had a dream last week that Liverpool were playing ( not any spacific team or match ) this team and their goalkeeper took a freekick, it hit the wall and bounced out to Alonso who run a clatter of yard's and whacked a shot from well inside his own half, the ball dropped perfectly into the open net and we won the match 1 - 0!

Here's the spooky bit, I have no knowledge of Sao Paulo but today during the Liverpool match I learned their keeper hit's all their freekick's and penalties! I'm not claiming to be a physcic ( SP? )here by any mean's, but it was just a tad weird don't you think?

I hope it comes true, or even better we win by a bigger margin.

When he takes a freekick, the defense stay in strategic position, to avoid things like this in your dream
And he not take all penaltys..Amoroso used to..

São Paulo is the favourite for one simple reason: the "Tricolor" treats this tournament as the most important oh the whole world, and the Reds see it as a disgusting "Mickey Mouse Cup".

I thought the score should have been about 7-0.

Scored three good goals, but squandered many other chances.

Cisse's final ball/ crosses are quite poor.
He had a chance second half to square it on the six yard box for crouch and it went nowhere.
Pongolle should have hit the Cisse back heel first time.

I think Rafa is only playing him to put him in the shop window for january, as mentioned by lawro.

Cisse is definately gonne either in January or June at the latest, which means the arrival of another striker maybe?

Stevie's goal, how was that for well taken!

Crouch. good finish in third minute from quite a tricky volley, could have gone sky high.

I would love to see sinama pongolle have more games, ii think he has a good touch.

Star man: Reina- solid as a rock.
I'm convinved the team for the final game will be:
                  reina
Finnan   Carra  Hyypia   Traore

Gerrard   Sissoko  Alonso   Riise
                Garcia
                   Crouch

maybe cisse in there. apparantly finna missed todays game due to not adapting to the time difference.

We don't see it as a "disgusting Mickey Mouse Cup" mate, although it isn't that important. Look at it this way, Liverpool haven't sat in a 15 hour flight to travel half way around the world to get beat in this tournement. It wouldn't do our moral any good either if we got hammered, so we will be going for the win, without a doubt - this isn't just a commercial trip for the lad's you know!

First of all, Cisse played excellent in today's game and was unlucky not to score. His crosses, passing and control were a lot better today compared to recent also. Probably one of his best all round matches for us!

And it's true Finnan missed the game due to jet lag.

youve only made 9 posts and already grinding. slow down and take it easy.

lfc played well as a unit bar none.

i bet youve never kicked a ball in your life. As a fan you can rightly criticise the team, but some of your comments are total bollox mate, and your treatment of our south american folk on here is wrong, even the wind up ones.

i myself have a go at folk from time to time, especially realmadridgalactico, but his treatment was warranted. Your treatment is one-sided

so my advice to you is get a grip, and stop using bold text, no one cares much what you put......so chill ok
