south american player ply their trade around the world - vietnam, fiji, sri lanka, india, arab saudi, malaysia, china, bhutan, nepal, mali, alaska?, everest coz they no they are going no where if they playing in their homeland.

They will get better life outside their country and they sing praise for their adoptive country where they play coz they are professional. They don undermine or look down their team mate or team ( maybe indian, malaysia, chinese, hong kong ) like their true fan back home.

We gonna be a world champion and nobody can stop us...sao paolo either and let hear what mourinho will say next...maybe he will say that world championship is not official coz the best team not around ( chelshite)

This is one of the dumbest things I have read on here. Clearly stereotypical views that don't reflect much knowledge about the actual issue..

That being said, though, most European leagues are clearly on a higher level than South American ones. There's no denying that. This is partly due to economic reasons, though. The best football talent in the world play in Europe, partly due to prestige and partly for economic reasons. I mean, don't you think if Brazilians, Argentinians, etc, we're paying 15+ times as much as European clubs did to their players - that they wouldn't come to play in South America?? And as the years went on, this whole "European clubs are better than South American clubs because the leagues in Europe are at a much higher level" thing wouldn't slowly start to become the opposite?? Money rules all.

Anyway, this tournament definitely means alot to these Sao Paulo fans. I could see why they would get offended by people telling them how it's on the low end of the list of importance to LFC. It is, though, to most fans. That's always been the feeling. But, a trophy is still a trophy. People just think of it as a headache because of when the competition is played. That's all, bambis.

Do you guys hate being called bambis or is that some other Brazilian team?? No offence, really. Just joking around.

Half time:

Sao Paulo 1 - 1 Al Ittihad

Sao Paulo have been average, their central midfield has been non-existent. Al Ittihad were the better side after Amoroso scored in the 16th minute and equalised through Mohammad Noor in the 33rd. Kallon has ripped Sao Paulo apart. Sao Paulo have looked best when they have got the ballwide through their full backs Junior and Cicinho (both very good players).

If we end up playing Sao Paulo their midfield's gonna have to be a lot better against the likes of Gerrard, Xabi and Sissoko. Al Ittihad could well win this.

You could argue that Al Ittihad would be disappointed they aren't 2-1 ahead. After they scored Sao Paulo were awful. I get the feeling their midfield is very lightweight and not up for a physical battle, the Saudi's are definitely more physical. I think Sao Paulo will struggle against the likes of Gerrard if we end up playing them.

Yes of course, I was talking about it's disappointing if we attend to both leagues' reputation. I expected an easy victory for Sao Paulo.

Well I hope Sao Paulo win. At least that way if we do win the thing we can say it slightly worth the trouble. Still say the whole thing is a waste of time though.

Liverpool boss Benitez hails 'unselfish' Gerrard

TOKYO (Reuters) - Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has hailed captain Steven Gerrard's "unselfish" contribution to his side's surge up the Premier League table this season.

Benitez made five signings after Liverpool's European Champions League triumph in May but the Spaniard acknowledged keeping Gerrard was his best decision.

"The first and most important was the player I re-signed -- Steven Gerrard," Benitez told Fifa.com.

"He was free as well which I thought was a good bit of business."

Liverpool turned down a bid of around $56 million (31 million pounds) from English champions Chelsea during a turbulent pre-season that strained relations between Benitez and Gerrard.

However, Benitez had nothing but praise for his captain as Liverpool prepared for their Club World Championship semi-final with Costa Rica's Deportivo Saprissa on Thursday.

"He is improving every year," Benitez said. "He can play anywhere. He is so unselfish in that respect. He always thinks about the team and not about himself."

Benitez had words of comfort for much-maligned striker Peter Crouch, who has struggled for goals since joining Liverpool from Southampton.

"Peter Crouch is a player who everyone knows about," Benitez added. "I am sure he will score a lot of goals."

Liverpool are on a 10-match unbeaten run and tied a club record of 10 clean sheets in a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough at the weekend -- their seventh successive Premier League victory.

Benitez's side are currently second behind Chelsea but the Spaniard said he was still looking to reinforce his squad.

"We are always looking to bring players in," he said. "But the priority for us at the moment is this (FIFA) trophy."

The superstitious Benitez had ordered Gerrard not to touch the trophy during a media day at Anfield last month.

"You don't want to tempt fate," the Spaniard said.

"It's a beautiful trophy and we want to bring it back to Anfield."

seeing how Sao Paolo hanged on to their dear life for a 3-2 win against Al Itthiad, don't looked like serious opposition to us. No shape, very little imagination for a Brazilian Champion???

Thanks for the article Judge. I agree Rafa. And I must admit I value a lot. Stars usually want to play in their position. The fact that he's appreciated by the whole world (the Chelski offer to unsettle us proves it) and the fact that he's ready to play in the right with no complains (unlike Cisse) tells a LOT about the proffesionalism of this guy. THumbs up.

nah they're not Brazilain champions, they won the Copa Libertadores though. They finished mid-table this season, and apparently have been in bad form since they won the Libertadores in July.

They were very poor though as you said, but credit to Al Ittihad, they gave Sao Paulo one hell of a scare, they deserved to take it to at leass extra time.

Assuming we beat Saprissa, if Sao Paulo play like that again we should beat them comfortably.
