The nineties - Any good memories for lfc

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Maybe its redknapps retirement but I began to think about the 1990s at LFC. We won the league with a very poor team in 1990, and then the slide. Won an FA cup in 1992 (only beating one premiership team on the way - Villa), won the mickey mouse a couple of times.

We had rubbish players like Nickey Tanner, Piechneck, Hysen etc. All our big buys like Dean Saunders, Clough, Stewart, Collymore etc were disappointing.

the "new breed" of Rednapp, Fowler, Mcmanamann etc had great potential but all thought they were "hot shots" before they won anything, lived the high life, thought they were superstars and never lived the life a professional should. All went to injury problems much younger than they should (Gazza maintains drinking weakened his body and made it susceptible to injury)

Are there any good memories of the 90s or shall we pretend it never happened?

The 1990s werw hugely frustrating. Whilst I wouldn't say the 1990 team was "poor" (Barnes in particular was devestating that year) it certainly wasn't one of our better teams and there was a need for a big overhaul. The Souness era, whilst short, was an utter nightmare. He was bringing in high profile players left right and centre and they were all failing. In fact, they weren't just failing, some, like Dicks and Paul Stewart, were failing miserably.

The Roy Evans time initial brought some promise but by 1998 the whole thing had left a bad taste in my mouth with all th Spice Boy stories and some abysmal performances against low ranking Premiership sides. It was frustrating as guys like Fowler, McMannaman, Ince, Berger, Redknapp etc all had oodles of talent.

Watching us fail repeatedly and watching Man UTD win the Premiership easily most years was heartbreaking.

I have some fond memories of Robbie Fowler in the mid 1990s but I'd rather forget the rest.

Both 4 3 games against Newcastle stick to my memory pretty easily the 1st for being the best league game ive ever witnessed and the 2nd one cos the 1st 45 minutes is some of the best football i have seen anyside play in the prem, we was 3 nil up but it should have been 10, macca and co were on fire, but typical of us back then we threw away a 3 goal lead i threatened to walk out but Dave (fella i go the game with) made us stay and stig whipped in an amazing cross and God made history repeat its self.....Other memorys i can instantly think of is carragher scoring on his debut, Fowler skinning staunton and scoring his best goal to date, Fowler sloting a pen against the blue scum then snortin the line ( or taking the p*ss out of rigobert by eating grass!) and the last 2 are Fowlers 4 minute hatrick and Collymores debut for the fact he was my favourite player in the prem at the time and i couldnt believe Evans made my dream come true and he scored a feckin whopper.....Worse memory is Wembley 96 (Need i say more).

Most of my good 90's memories regarding LFC involve Fowler. He's still my favourite player!!!! That goal in Europe (vs Ma Pa??) where razor tw*tted a long ball to Stig Inge, who headed it to God. He flicked it over his and the defender's heads, belted into the area, then smacked it on the half volley. Fricking amazing. I doubt another player would have even tried that!!!! Razor turning Cantona's collar down was a classic!!!! Robbie showing his ar*e to Le Saux vs Chelsea. That was hilarious, watching that gay boy lose his rag, and Rob just laughing!!!! (That cheating t*at shouldve been banned for the elbow in that game.) Rob's 4 minute hattrick, and the one vs Man U. Babb trying a DIY sex-change using only his weight and a goal post!!!! Beating the then Champions Arsenal 4-0 at Highbury. Goyts. Rob scoring winner in the first leg vs Middlesborough in the CC cup.4-3's. A few more, but I can't be ar*ed to think about it!

The 3-3 draw against Man U in Jan 94, when Nigel Clough suddenly remembered he could play, was some match. An injury time winner would have topped it off nicely, having come back from 3 goals down, but even so it was a storming game. The 92 Cup Final was a nice occasion as well, with Michael Thomas scoring a cracking goal before Rushie put the result beyond doubt. Worth mentioning that, even though we had three replays during that cup run, we only came across top flight opposition once - Villa in the Quarter Finals.

On the whole, the 90s was a time of wasted potential and some truly misguided signings. I'm sure I'm not the only one that was convinced Robbie Fowler was going to end up breaking Bobby Charlton's England goalscoring record.

So yeah, some nice memories, but certainly a massive comedown after the 80s. :)

Ivor - Villa comment already made in main thread :rasp

Thought it a bit pathetic that Robbie made gay vibes at the married with children Le seux because Le seux goes to museums and appreciates art- made Robbie look like an uneducated :censored: (albeit a very rich one)

Forgot about Babbs "tackle" against Chelsea, everyone in the bar crossed their legs.

Re Robbie sniffing the line (not sure if 90s!) the funniest thing was GH saying he was pretending to eat the grass "he practices that in training".

I really feel that a few players especially Robbie could have achieved a lot more if they had discipline (maybe even GH) when they came into the team instead of the soft Roy Evans.

As for the slide - defo started with Dalglish, Souness just screwed up quicker.

Dalglish's team, while played beautiful flowing football, had one major weaksess which somehow was not rectified later - a very apparent weakness in defence at high balls.

It is rather confusing to me that while the defense has been the bedrock of the great Paisley era, had become so fragile to aerial bombardment by the likes of Wimbledon by 1988-89, even before Dalglish resigned. He reinforced with Hysen, a cultured player but not really equipped to handle the hurly burly of the English game and Alan Hansen was nearing the end of a magnificent career and it was reported that his knees were so dodgy that he only did light training then. Also, Liverpool did not find a replacement to one of the greatest defensive midfielders we had who was also feeling the effects of injuries - Ronnie Whelan.

Souness did not addressed these problems and his uncompromising management style did not endear the senior players to his methods.

The 95-96 were a great team to watch, and i think if that side had a good central defensive partnership they could have challenged Man U more than they did. I mean Fowler, Mcmanaman, Redknapp and Rob Jones were great players and the likes of Collymoore and even David James showed plenty of talent. It was just a shame about the defence which was pretty average, plus we all know about the spice boy culture now.

I'd rather forget most of the 1990s.....a lot of bad memories.

Losing 1-5 away to Coventry under Souness.

Losing 2-3 to Coventry at home under Evans....to Ndlovu hattrick.

Ronnie Rosenthal's shot off the bar against Villa in (?) 1992.

Jamie Redknapp picking up a bad ankle injury for England against Scotland in Euro 1996, thus starting a long slow descent into injury hell for a player with as much ability as David Beckham.

David James' howlers v. Man UTD at Anfield in 1998.

Phil Babb and Mark Kennedy getting arrested in Dublin in (?) 1998 after an Ireland international game for being drunk and disorderly and playing Starky n Hutch with a cop's car.

Don Hutchinson' tendency to get his kit off when :censored: and stick Budweiser labels to his :censored:. And let tabloid newspapers photograph him.

A young (and obviously impressionable) Jamie Carragher being very bold at a Liverpool Xmas party.

Robbie Fowler and Steve McMannaman telling FHM (?) "John Holmes" when asked who was the most influence on their career.

Bjorne Kharvme. Full stop. Who the hell let this guy put on a Liverpool shirt?

Letting Steve Staunton go in 1991.

Letting Steve Staunton gor cheaply.

Letting Beardsely leave while still in his prime.

Letting Ray Houghtan leave too early.

Bruce Grobellaar and the Malaysian betting syndicates.

The Phil Babb/Jason McAteer Roy Evan's daughter rumour.

Stan Collymore confirming in his biography that he shagged Roy Evans' daughter on the night of the 1996 FA Cup final.

Those stupid cream Armani suits in 1996.

Razor Ruddock's 48 inch waist and trying to find shorts big enough for him.

Roy Evans getting the big job and announcing on his first day that he was bringing "democracy" back to the dressing room, only to allow the lunatics take over the asylum.

Palace beating us 3-4 in the 1990s FA Cup semi final......particularly after our two league games against them gave us an aggregate score of 11-0.

An abysmal return to Europe after a 6 year absence......being humiliated home and away by CSKA (?) Moscow.

Jan Molby's gut.

Steve McMannaman being probably the first really big name footballer in the world to cash in on the Bosman ruling.

Phil Babb watches his mate Macca leave on a Bosman, so he decides to sit on his contract for his last year, doesn't play a minute of first team football, before walking out the door for zilch. Monkey see, monkey do.

Karl Heinz Reidle.....nice guy and a great player in.......1991. What was Evans thinking about?

Sean Dundee.

Torben Picnick.

Istvan Kozma.

Stan Collymore's temperment getting in the way of his extraordinary, unique talent.

"Turning all the corners".

Paul Ince acting the Guvnor in Melwood.

People give out about Houllier.....................looking back on the 1990s Houllier is a Liverpool hero compared to some of the fools back then.

The film Wonderland, with Val Kilmer, is the story of the "great" John Holmes' life.

Its all well and good for any of us to crack jokes about porn stars, but Macca's and Fowler's comments were indicative of the whole "We're young, we're super rich, we don't give a toss" attitude. Not exactly the frame of mind required in probably the most competitive team sport on the planet.
