Don't think Garcia would solve any of our wide midfield problems. His position is just behind the front man, he just hasn't looked as effective for me when he's been on the wing

Totally agree,

Play Garcia just dropped behind our prime striker .

Assuming we still have Gerrard next season I feel the only area's that need to be addressed are ...

Immediate ......Right Mid
Longer term .... replacement for Sammi

Woof, Can't really disagree with any of that! But, I wish he could develop that extra bit of skill to really make the forward position his own.
Can't agree with Kop about his touch, the number of times he loses the ball between his feet is painful and frustrating.
But really don't like criticising the lad, because there are more positives than negatives.
Pity you couldn't put match Riise's head and heart with Kewells skill and pace !! What a player you would have then.

Then we'd have some player !

But short of going out and spending a load of money ,based on what we already have ,at left mid I'd go for Riise every time .
Kewell is a luxury we can no longer afford . (pity ,but Harry hasn't done the business at lfc ,even sammi is looking more of at threat at scoring

Why are people saying Riise doesn't have pace please?

Kewell lacks pace these days. He's simply lost it.

Riise is a quality player and just as good a left back as a left mid. I never rated him as a midfielder untill this season, now i feel he can operate in both areas successfully. As can Warnock. We do need another left winger... a Vicente of Duff, but that isn't the main area of concern right now.

We need a class goalkeeper a right sided midfielder and a striker.

Goalkeeping we've got Dudek,Carson , Kirland .
Strikers we've got (at least) Cisse ,Morientes ,Baros .
I wouldn't therefore consider Goalkeeper or Striker as a priority .
Right side Mid would get my immediate attention.
Longer term. A replacement for Sammi and a centre mid if Stevie G is not planning to stay.

I think Scott Carson can fill the gap between the stick's Stu, I truly believe that. However, he still has to develope more which will come with more games. Dudek look's so unsure of himself these day's and I think it's time he moved on. Scott first choice and Kirkland for back up.

I don't necessarily agree with you that we need a striker, but if we can bring in a quality player, bring it on. I do feel however that Cissé will prove loads of peopl wrong next season!

I agree with you on the right sided midfielder.

I agree with Woof Woof. We don't need a keeper, if Dudek is sold then Carson will be given the green light by Rafa, like he has when Dudek hasn't played.

Despite the blunder he made, he's much more cool when balls are crossed into the box by the opposition where as Kirkland and Dudek sh1t their pants.

I also agree with Woof on the Warnock/Riise partnership, however I don't think that Traore will be sold but non the less it will be good to have some competion in all positions.

Luis Garcia has scored 11 goals in his first season, two less than Baros so yes he needs to play behind the striker IF we get a good right winger.

I often think about that myself woof woof lol! Another one I alway's think about is fitting in Hamann, Gerrard and Alonso in one frame, doesn't leave much possibilities though! Can't be bad having Hamann as back up though.

It would be a huge work load for Riise and Finnan bombing back and forth to give width.

answer - yes you could, and i would be prepared to try it.

cisse looked great raiding down the flanks just before he broke his leg, it gave him a new lease of life when he went wide because he was struggling through the centre.
in fact it was on one of those forays that he broke his leg.
the only problem is that you wont get much tracking back out of him i suspect, but garcia being fair to him has started to do his fair share of the dirty work since christmas.

Interesting proposition .

But my question was posed assuming we could also retain some defensive credibility .

Riise - I really don’t think he is a long-term answer on the left side of midfield. His first touch, technique, lack of compusher and his passing is not of high enough quality. Defensively he is fairly solid, though sometimes he does jump into tackles too easily and let the player get past him. On the plus side he is quiet quick, can beat people, put in decent crosses, takes good corners and can score goals. I would like to see him as are first choice left back overlapping with a new left sided midfielder.

Warnock - Defensively he is the best left back at the club, better than Riise or Troare. Offensively, though not brilliant, he can provide sufficient support. He may not be particularly quick and his delivery can be hit and miss, but he is more comfortable on the ball and a better short and long passer than Riise and Troare. I would keep him as cover on the left, and sell Troare.

Garcia - Not the permanent answer on the right, has been earmarked for the 'special role' playing off the main striker, and does it well.

Dudek/Kirland/Carson - Dudek will be on his way. Personally I would still keep Kirland as my number 1, he seems to be completely ruled out by most on this forum. You have to consider he was playing with a back injury. Carson could provide good backup for a number 1.

Good question.First of all, I think we know that Baros will be on his way. Second off all It will be intersting to see how he will fit those players into his system. I think it will be something along these lines:

Kirkland

Finnan Carragher Hyypia Riise

Alonso Gerrard

Cisse Garcia Kewell

Morientes
