Benitez involves Gerrard
by Paul Higham -  created on 6 Mar 2005

CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE
lRafa Benitez says that he is involving Steven Gerrard in his plans to bring in new players in the summer.

The amazing step comes in a bid to keep the Liverpool skipper at Anfield, with almost daily speculation surrounding his future.

Benitez says that he is discussing potential new signings with his skipper, to assure him that he is building a side capable of challenging for major honours.

The Spaniard says that he discussed his move for Fernando Morientes with Gerrard to emphasise that he wanted to bring in quality players.

"I always talk to Steven about my ideas for the future and he knows that we want a strong team around him," said Benitez.
"Sometimes I have told him about players I am looking at because I want him to understand we are working very hard for the present and the future.

"When I decided to sign Fernando Morientes I asked Steve what he thought.

"I asked him if he liked Morientes as a player and what he thought he could bring to the team."

It is a strange move for a manager to discuss his new signings with members of his squad, and it emphasises how important
Gerrard is to the Anfield outfit.

However, Benitez is quick to point out that he did the same with his old club Valencia, discussing team strengthening plans with senior players.

"When I was in Spain at Valencia I spoke to some of my key players about what we would do.

"That is important and I have done that with Steve. We are working now to bring in players in the summer.

"We have to watch them all around the world because that is what others are doing. I don't want to say how many I am looking for, it is not the right time to talk about that, but we are looking.

"Steven understands how important he is to us and he has a clear idea about the things he wants. He wants to win with us and he will do the best for his club and that's the most important thing."

Benitez could have a cash boost for the summer as speculation mounts about David Moores' position as majority shareholder.

Anfield chief executive Rick Parry has been leading the search for fresh investment into the club, with the cost of the new stadium escalating alarmingly.

It is thought that Moores has reluctantly accepted that the best step for Liverpool is for him to sell his controlling share in the club to bring in more investment.

Local businessman Steve Morgan is still interested in pumping some cash into the club, and Moores realises that Benitez needs cash to spend to build a quality side - and convince Gerrard to stay.

that is too long of a list.  i think you are getting too overly ambitious.  im sure if we do offload gerrard for 25m and over, we could sign 3 or more of those players. i wish this wont happen though. cash injection at the end of the season would allow benitez to strenthen anyway.

im afriad our weakest positions are the wings, then the center back. garcia and riise are both not quality enough to be in a top 4 side. garcia is too lightweight and tends to give the ball away way too cheaply. in fact, nunez would be the better right winger than garcia. although riise's goal scoring capabilities is realised, but he still lack the pace and the technical skill (e.g. Robben) to pass defenders and swing in a decent cross. if you notice riise carefully, he tend to always cut to the middle and tries to take a shot. he does that too often. why cant he fill a supporting striker role than?

as for center back, carragher has improved loads under rafa's guidance but hyypia has gone the other way. hes prime time is over and he can only run half the speed of a striker nowadays. i do not need to mention pellegrino, though he was superb yesterday. we need a center back to partner carra that is strong and fast. notice, we havent got a clean sheet for quite a while already.

as for other positions, it is fine at the moment though i thought baros's performance yesterday was abysmal to anyones standard. but it wasnt really his fault as he was forced to a lone striker role due to morientes's last minute pullout. it was very hard for him and he generally lacked support from the equally abysmal midfield.

midfield is fine should alonso come back. we would than have gerrard (if not gone yet) and alonso, our two major midfield partnership as well as hamann and biscan whenever we need them.

That's a good list of players but I think we need to define the club's identity first such as their prefered and realistic style of football. For example, if we want to play more on the ground and emphasize on possession then we need select that kind of players. It will not work if we have a bit of everything which is what we have now. We need to have a certain style so the players are comfortable and can relate to the way they play. Otherwise, its just impossible to do. That's my 5cents worth of advice. :)

A lot of names in there are pure mediocre!

neimi, bridge, upsom, gray defoe??

hardly gonna set the world alight are they?

How about Kaka from Milan, seedorf?

what about Ronaldhinio? Davids, (short term)

may sound far fetched, but if you think we can win the premiership with your list, then think again.

kaka? maybe very expensive, 20m or more, but you know your money is safe!

Reason why Mourhinio has been so successful with his team and signings in his first year, is that they can actually play the game correctly.

It aint rocket science

Goalkepers
Robinson - will probably go to Man Utd
Kiraly - not good enough for us
Niemi - will probably go to either Man Utd or Arsenal
Abtiati - Don't really know much about him.
Cudicini - Would love to have him but Moaninho will tell us to fook off!
Given - Good goalkeeper but will be too expensive to get him
Hilderbrand - Class goalkeeper but I heard he want to stay in Germany for another year.
Frey - He has up/down but too expensive to get him.

Defenders
Upson - Reliable, wouldn't mind to have him.
Chivu - Will probably go to another Italian club this summer.
Mexes - Should have gone to Liverpool last season but he is not the same player as before signed for Roma.
Cesar - Who is he and where he play for?
Woodgate - if he gets fit - Love to have him and he will do well for us but I hope he will get better.
king - Too expensive.
Bridge - Now he is out of 10 months.
Mellberg - Solid, I think he is type of centre back that we need and he want to play European Football, why not to have him.
Evra - No chance to get him because Real Madrid, Top Italians clubs are after him.
Metzleder
Gray - Are you having a laugh, he is not that good player and now he is on loan with Leeds!!
Kuffour - Would be good bargain because he is out of contract this summer but there will be alot of stiff competitons from clubs to get him.

Midfielders
David Pizzaro - milan will prob get him tho...you are correct!!
Jankoluvski - ditto Who is he? Where's he from?
Rothen - Fantastic player, fantastic crosser...is he type of the player that we need..I would say yes.
Igabaza - Never heard of him,
Yeste - Never heard of him.
Parker - Yes, he is hardworker and I believe he got great attitude and he doesn't seem to me that he never let the club down. Would have him.
Ballack - if sg fu*ks off No comment
Vincente - Will be difficult to get him now because Valencia are doing really well and so he might change his mind to stay with Valencia.
Baraja - Same as above.
Albelda - Same as above.
Fiore - Overated player.
Rosicky - Class player and he is a tricky winger and always enjoy watching him as player.
Fabregas - very doubtful tho - NO CHANCE
Iniesta - Does he play for Barcelona? Well, too early to say about him. I think he has signed long contract with Barcelona.

Forwards
AJ - NO WAY
Defoe - Good player and it will be VERY EXPENSIVE to get him.
Owen - I can't see him to go back to England this summer.
Torres - now im dreaming.....yes you are dreaming lol!!!
Bojinov - Already signed for Fiorentina in January Transfer Window.
Mista - No need to get him.
Gilardino - Yeah, dream on....AC Milan will probably get him!!

Jankulovski is a full Czech international winger and was an important part of their Euro 2004 team.
He is currently at Udinese but has signed a 4 year deal with AC Milan i believe.

Ibagaza is a very good player, Atletico Madrid's best midfielder for sure, would have him here.

Yeste is a Spanish international now and he is an excellent player for Athletic Bilbao, would love to have him here as well.
