Carra - Worth being international regular

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Recognition and reward have not come easily for Jamie Carragher. Undervalued by his own supporters at Liverpool, the 27-year-old has found his versatility a hindrance, rather than a help, on the international stage, with Sven-Goran Eriksson rarely keen to promote the Liverpudlian ahead of the specialist operators in his England squad. Overlooked in favour of the unproven Ledley King when Eriksson was without John Terry for England's Euro 2004 opener against France last summer, Carragher is in danger of becoming the nearly man among England's defensive riches.
But for the injuries that have led to the absences of Terry, King, Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell and Matthew Upson from the England party for tomorrow's friendly against Holland at Villa Park, Carragher may well have been forced to spend another international contemplating the log-jam of defensive rivals ahead of him in the pecking order.
England's wealth of defensive options, with the quartet of Terry, King, Ferdinand and Campbell as formidable as any in the world, has virtually suffocated Carragher's ambitions of becoming anything more than a bench warmer for Eriksson, and he acknowledges that he faces a stern challenge if he is to ever climb the defensive ladder in the England set-up.

He'll pass the ball 40 yards,
He's quick and he's f*cking hard,

nah carragher will never be ad never has been a good right back

neville is the right man for right back, last season i thought carragher was poor at right back and now hes at centre back im far happier and i think hes a better player now than playing at right back

i f#cking hate neville but he's the best of what we've got unfortunately. right back is a position we've always struggled with for england. just think, if rob jones hadn't had to finish his career early through injury, that manc tw@t would only have about 5 caps by now. :D

well i dont really have deep bitterness towards united players, thats y if they're better good luck to them, i dont suppose england myself, but at the end of the day if u are a england fan, u're not going to say anything if they won it with united players, euro champ or world cup, but not always have england m anagers picked the right players

erikisson is a ****** manager to be honest, i mean anyone who played heskey all those times and then when he had the guts to drop him, he made some ****** reason and just said hes still in his plans lol gutless

Carra certainly has his work cut out if he ever wants to make it into the starting eleven. As the article says, his progress has been hindered by the versatility that has seen him start out in midfield (tis hard to believe JC scored on his debut!) move to right back, then left, then right again before moving to the centre this season.
I think most of us would agree he has found his best position now but its unfortunate that it is also Englands deepest position. Carra's only been playing CB for 6 months - I would expect him to be better this time next year so maybe he can move up Ericksons' list of favourites which i figure looks like this:

1- Ferdinand
2- Campbell
3- Terry
4- Woodgate
5- King
6- Carragher
7- Upson

Carragher's major problem is the opposition at the back for England. Rio got into a world cup XI, Sol was in the undifeated team, Terry is in a current undifeated team and King LOOKS more the part as a big strong guy. Also, in the years of Hyypia and Henchoz, Carragher was seen more as a left or right back. However, if he puts in a good show against Holland, he will give Sven a serious head-ache for the continuing qualifiers.
Do I want Carragher to play for England? Yes for fortyfive mins, but for ninety? I'm not too keen, but what can we do about that? It's up to JC and Sven. Good luck to him though.

Following the match against Holland, the BBC website gave Carragher man of the match, saying "Again proved himself a more than able deputy in defence and was the best of an ordinary bunch."

Didn't catch the game but can anyone tell me why the Chelski lovin' Sven rested Lampard after 45 mins and played Gerrard for more than 80mins?

Yes. Frank Lampard was subbed at the half, but I don't think Stevie got quite 80mins. I'm not sure but I think he came off with Beckham after about 70 or 75. Still too much though
