Biscan to southampton? - Today's guardian

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

yet more transfer news in todays papers unfortunately involves the kop's no1 cult hero moving to southampton.

http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,1563,1380821,00.html

this comes at a time when igor has been producing some top class displays for us, most notably in deportivo where he was man of the match. hardly surprising now that he has been playing in his rightful position and not at centre back.

i still think he's a valuable squad member. certainly better than that muppet diao anyway. and why would he want to be playing in the championship next season?

reports also claim that he could be joined by stephane henchoz.

its catch 22 situation with biscan.

yes, he seems to be playing well now. But we have sh1tloads of central midfielders in the squad now (Gerrard, Hamann, Alonso, Aimar  :D , Welsh, Diao  , Garcia can play there too).

Liverpool negotiating with Southampton

Liverpool are reportedly negotiating the possible transfer of Igor Biscan to Southampton.

Former Reds boss Gerard Houllier shelled out £5.5million for the Croatian midfielder when he was signed from Dinamo Zagreb four years ago but he has failed to hold down a regular place in the side.

The quiet and popular member of the squad will be out of contract in the summer and Liverpool would allow him to leave for a nominal fee in January.

Saints want Biscan

Southampton boss Harry Redknapp is keen to make Igor Biscan his first signing.

The Liverpool midfielder has failed to impress Rafael Benitez this season and will be out of contract this summer.

Saints chairman Rupert Lowe held talks with Liverpool officials after his side's 1-0 defeat at Anfield on Tuesday and a deal seems imminent.

Redknapp moves for cut-price Biscan

Southampton have opened talks with Liverpool aimed at signing the Croatian midfielder Igor Biscan after the transfer window opens on Saturday.
Biscan, who has played only a bit-part role since joining the Merseysiders in a £5.5m deal from Dinamo Zagreb four years ago, is out of contract in the summer and will be allowed to leave for a nominal fee. However, he may prefer to consider his options on the continent before committing himself to St Mary's.

The Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe held talks with Liverpool officials after his side's 1-0 defeat at Anfield on Tuesday, with a view to making Biscan Harry Redknapp's first signing for the club. The former Portsmouth manager confirmed that he hoped to bring in "three or four more faces" during January, to be funded by the sale of James Beattie to Aston Villa, Everton or Newcastle.

Biscan has not featured for Liverpool since their Carling Cup quarter-final success at Tottenham early this month. The 26-year-old, who can operate in midfield or defence, has made 95 appearances for the club, scoring twice. He could be joined on the south coast by his Anfield team-mate Stéphane Henchoz, who will also be allowed to leave and has attracted interest from Manchester City.

Leeds United have rejected Liverpool's £250,000 bid for their 19-year-old goalkeeper Scott Carson. Chelsea have also expressed an interest in the England Under-21 international, who was the subject of a £400,000 bid from the Championship side Wigan Athletic this month, though Leeds are hoping to raise nearer £1m for the youth-team graduate.

David O'Leary last night played down claims by Redknapp that Villa had made a bid for Beattie in the past few days.

The Villa manager tried to sign the England striker last August - and will attend a Premier League hearing on January 18 after claims that he made an illegal approach for Beattie at the time - but Villa's £6m offer fell short of Southampton's then valuation of £8m.

O'Leary has made signing a striker top of his priority list this time around, although he is denying Redknapp's claim that he had followed up his summer interest with another offer. "I have not been involved in anything so far," the Irishman said. "Whether my chairman Doug Ellis has reopened negotiations or not, I couldn't tell you."

· The Premier League has announced that clubs will not be allowed to field players bought in the transfer window until January 5.

Although they can be officially bought and sold from New Year's Day, the registration and administration process means clubs cannot field new acquisitions in the Premiership on January 1 or in the next full programme two days later, Monday January 3.

Southampton and Fulham will be the first teams able to field any newly acquired talent when they meet at St Mary's next Wednesday.

I hope 'the mighty Biscan' stays, he was unlucky picking up his injury just as he was getting some decent minutes on the pitch and performing well :(

i heard Southampton will get Biscan and Henchoz.
Im a massive Biscan fan, alwaysh ave been, the guy rocks. But...
We do need to get rid of some players,a nd if offers come in for players who cant get games then we should sell them.
I remember being gutted when we sold Thompson, but it was better for his career at the time as he wanted to play first team football.
Thats the thing about our players, they are proper footballers, they want to play every week.
If Biscan and Henchoz go or not, they know that they will always get a warm reception from us

Have to give Igor some credit, he look's like a footballer these days as opposed to a big donkey!

Actually people often forget that we beat out pretty much every top club in Europe to sign the guy. Shame Gezabell couldnt comprehend the idea of playing a midfielder in.... well midfield!

Am I the only person that doesn't buy into this "Biscan is a cult hero" thing?

Thats what fans of clubs like Cambridge and Millwall do, not Liverpool.

Biscan is not an underdog. He came here for big money on a big contract after captaining his previous team in the Champions League. He was initially played in midfield for a year and was abysmal there. He had an attitude problem and twice got kicked out of the Croatian national squad for going out night clubbing when he was supposed to be on curfew.

Sure, he has put in two or three decent performances this season to which I say: about bloody time!

Liverpool FC are now firmly in control of the Biscan situation as he wants to stay at the club but will soon be out of contract, and I say the risk of giving him a new contract is too great.

Well if rumours are correct there going to be some incoming transfers and so some players have to be cleared out to balance the wages book.
While i rather see Diao go, Biscan handful of good performances have probably made it the best time to sell him
