Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Just seen on www.liverpoolfc.tv that a 1 nil win in are final group game will put us through, its very complicated so i wont try and explain. Just trust me or visit the offical liverpool website and it explains all there.
Chopper:Look, you're not still angry at me about the leg, are you?
Neville Bartos : Nah, forget about it.
Chopper : Because I don't know if you remember, Neville, but I had that bloody shotgun pointed at your head. I reconsidered and dropped it down to your kneecap. Remember?

From liverpool.tv

A 1-0 victory over Olympiacos in Liverpool's final Champions League match on December 8 will take the Reds into the last 16 of the competition.
Despite many reports indicating the Reds can only progress by virtue of a two goal success, UEFA's criteria for separating teams who finish on equal points says Rafa's men will progress if they win either by 1-0 or a two goal margin.

If Liverpool beat Olympiacos at Anfield then both clubs will finish the campaign on ten points each. So how do the Reds finish ahead of their Greek counterparts with a 1-0 win?

After points gained the next criteria is to see which team has the superior goal difference from games played between the two sides. In this case it would be level as Olympiacos won 1-0 in Athens and Liverpool will have won 1-0 at Anfield.

Then UEFA look at the number of away goals scored in the games between the two teams. Again, we didn't score over there and they won't score over here if the match finishes 1-0.

Next, it comes down to goal difference from all the games played in the group and this is where Liverpool would prosper with a 1-0 victory.

Liverpool's goal difference would be +2 while Olympiacos' would only be +1. So the Reds will go through.

However, a 2-1 or 3-2 success is off little use to Liverpool if Monaco also win their final game in La Coruna as Olympiacos would then have scored an away goal, taking them through instead by virtue of the earlier criteria set out by UEFA.

A two goal winning margin will see Liverpool qualify from achieving better head to head results against Olympiacos over the two games.

It may seem confusing, but so long as we win 1-0 or by two goals then we are definitely into the last 16.

The full scenario becomes more interestnig if Monaco draw their final game, then we have 3 teams level on 10 points and the UEFA system in order is then ...

4.05 If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group
matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:
a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the
teams in question;
b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams
in question;
c) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches
played among the teams in question;
d) superior goal difference from all group matches played;
e) higher number of goals scored;
f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question,as well as its association, over the previous five seasons (see paragraph 6.02)

So that means they take just the 6 games played between Monaco, Liverpool and Olympiacos. At present the table from these games is

                  Played     Points   GD
Olympiacos       3           6       +1
Monaco            4           6       -1
Liverpool          3           3        0

- If Monaco draw a win by any score (even 2-1, 3-2, etc) we are through as it would make our goal difference better than Olympiacos.

- If Monaco lose then any win will do.

- If Monaco win then we do have to win by the 1-0 or by 2 clear goals if the score is not 1-0

Cheers
