I'M NOT SAYING SELL GERRARD OK! Please read this bit first twice.
Right, now thats out of the way, Stu mentioned on an earlier post the consequences and potential benefits of selling Stevie. I thought I'd have a go at his scenario. Assuming we've just sold Stevie to Chelski for 35 million (less than he's worth in my view) and that the manager gets given all the money. What do you do with it?

First thing, we need a couple of strikers.

Morientes- I think you'd have to go to about 10 million to permanently aquire his services. Most would agree he's a top player.
Robert Earnshaw- about 4 million if you get in in january. We've done the arguments to death. I rate him and think he will continue to score goals whether we sign him or not. Almost everybody disagrees except taff but there you go.

We need a couple of midfielders.

I'd look at Graveson. Stop laughing! I think he's a good player and would cost around 2.5 million as he's out of contract. ManU are sniffing round him aswell.
I'd look at Scott Parker. I know most don't rate him but I've seen him play loads of times and think he's a good player. I think you'd get for about 6 million.
SWP would probably cost an arm and a leg. If they could be persuaded to take 11 million I'd take him. If not I'd take Pennant for about 4 million from Arsenal. This is probably the more likely scenario.

We'd need a defender.

Ledley King. I'd go to a maximum of 15 million and build my defence around him. A lot don't rate him but I do.

Total likely cost: Morietes  10 million.
                        Earnshaw  4  million.
                        Graveson 2.5 million.
                        Parker       6  million.
                        King         15 million.

                         total        37.5 million.

You would have three cast iron first-team regulars out of that. King, Parker/Graveson, Morientes/Earnshaw.

There, I'm ther to be shot at. Bring it on. And I'm not saying Earnshaw is better than Morientes either.

Obviously I forgot the 4 million for Pennant. that makes 41.5 million. FWIW I think he's the only gamble amongst the players. The rest are good-pros. Hard working, ambitious players who would do us a job.

BigMick,

I do agree with you about Earnshaw, I said so many times about him, most of fans disagree with me, so he is very good player, good technique, very fast as furious, would be great move for Liverpool.

I rate him highly and always admired since he played for Cardiff before went to W.B.A.

Thomas Gravesen would be good move for us, I feel that he is type of player that we need for midfield position.

I am not surprised about Man Utd have been sniffing around, you can see why cos he is very good player.

Jeez Stan, I wasn't expecting that. I also forgot to mention Damien Francis from Norwich. Now theres a bloke who will make a player. Point is though, keeping Stevie is great. Selling him is not nessecarily ludicrous. Depends how much he wants to stay, how much you get for him, what you do with the cash etc.
Someone earlier asked what you would do if somebody offered 100 million for him? well you sell him. Don't you?

Realistically i wouldnt sell Gerrard, and id get darren Bent for around 4 mil, Ze roberto on a free (left wing) SWP or pennant on the right and id take a chance on that left winger Arsenal have got Owusu Abyie who looks an awesome prospect but its unlikely they would let him go....Also id like to see morientes or Fowler on loan, and if there iis any change out the money id take a gamble on Danny Gabbidon from Cardiff, until we win the champions league, spurs get relegated and then sign Ledley for about 10 million
Chopper:Look, you're not still angry at me about the leg, are you?
Neville Bartos : Nah, forget about it.
Chopper : Because I don't know if you remember, Neville, but I had that bloody shotgun pointed at your head. I reconsidered and dropped it down to your kneecap. Remember?

Yeah, forgot about that...he played well for Wales against England at Old Trafford last month. I will keep eye on him but I am positively sure that he is ready to play in Premiership and would be good job but I don't know if he is good enough to play for us, but I would give him a chance to see how he go for us if he joined us.

I think he is a class act to be honest and would be a great buy but can see the doubts as he is a laid back kinda guy

The rumour is Blackburn down here which makes me think are we too far up the Premiership to risk gambling on a 1st Div player

Is this the future where the likes of Blackburn gamble and develop and sell on for a profit

Leagues within leagues eh

Bruno Zidane,

Danny have been strongly linked with Spurs last season but fell through cos of Glenn Hoddle left the job so also Danny has been linked with Blackburn and Newcastle this season, so i heard that Newcastle have been offered £2.5 millions to Cardiff for Danny, which is bargain offer.

I have to call you up about your maths BigMick.

Its not as simple as saying: we get x amount of money for Gerrard and then spend that x amount of money on players.

For a start, it rarely happens for any transfer over 10million where the buying club signs a cheque for 10million and hands it to the selling club. Some of the money goes to agents and to the player, and there could be other interested parties who get a cut. After these amounts are deducted, the fee would probably be structured in stage payments over a couple of years. You rarely ever get the full amount straight up.

Stage payments in some ways are good and allow most clubs to finance transfers, as probably only Chelsea of all the clubs in world football have the cash resources to automatically write a cheque. Every other club does it in stage payments, even Madrid and Man UTD. Stage payments allowed Newcastle to sign Shearer and Leeds sign Rio Ferdinand.

Really then, its a matter of balancing the books and clubs can sign players on the back of the stage payments.

The problem with your maths is that the transfer fee is only part of a players cost. Most people forget about wages and bonuses. All of those players you mentioned, if signed on four year contracts, could cost the club 25 to 35million alone in salaries over the next four years, whereas Gerrard's salary over the next four years would probably be in the 12 to 15million.

Thats the real cost: wages.

Spoilsport   We were planning a spending spree then  :D

Seriously though good point it is the wage thing although purchasing would inevitably see some being sold or released

I think come Jan we will have a pretty good idea on who will be here next season as a few contracts will either be offered or not and we will probably begin to see the nucleus of a Benitez side start to take shape

I think at the moment we are surviving but with the bonus of a few players i.e. Traore and biscan maybe giving Benitez some food for thought

Let me get this right.

You want to take Gerrard out of our midfield?

You want to sell him to Chelsea?

You want us to bring in Gravesen?

You want us to bring in Scott Parker?

You want this movement of players to improve us as a team?

Leon, this is the very first time I have had any respect for one of your deliberately outrageous posts.
I personally think that this Sell Gerrard correspondence is the work of the insane !!

yeah he is a good player who happens to play for everton, i guarantee he will still be playin for us next season aswell!!

tommy grav is settled and is one of the fan faves, he said he wants bigger things and possibly europe to tempt him to stay and without tempting fate i think thats a big possibility this season!
when you're 4-0 up..
you should never lose 7-1
