Pretty sure that's the league cup. I have one of the illustrated history books and there is a pic in it of Thommo with it on his head

Was it paraded at the next home game before K.O ?.

League cup paraded before the kick off of the next league game...but which team did play at Anfield that day, what was the date, what was the score, who scored and what was so unusual about the fixture at that time and why was it played at that time ? Some detective work needed but all the clues are in the picture for you to investigate.

Were they trying to recreate Gordon Milne and Geoff Strong parading the FA Cup around the ground before the Inter game? 25 year anniversary of that game or something?

Yep, same here. Tried googling some games that happend right after winning the League Cup a few times in the early 80s but found nothing too strange about them.

Guess you'll have to tell us yourself supersub.

It wasn’t the 81 League Cup final replay at Villa Park was it? The 2-1 game?

You have the correct year...we won the league cup in a replay against West Ham...but the cup was paraded at the next game at Anfield ...what was the opposition, score, scorers and what was so unusual about the game and why ....remember it was 39 years ago ....

So it must be the home match against Man U. which we lost 0-1, defender Gordon McQueen scoring the winner for them. Is that right?

Can't find what was so unusual for that game though. Maybe the fact that the scum beat us at Anfield haha?

Edit: Just googled the date, 14 April 1981, it was a Tuesday and looking at the picture it must have been played during the evening. Maybe that was the unusual thing?

I know mate, I thought the trophy might have been paraded around Old Trafford before the replay, you just said the trophy was paraded around the ground before kick off, you didn’t specifically state what ground it was.
I don’t even recognise the 2 (I assume) ex players parading the trophy, the smaller one looks faintly like Brian Hall but if I had to put money on it I’d say it wasn’t him.
Got me stumped this one.

We drew 1.1 with West Ham in the final and then beat them in a replay about 3 weeks later.  3 days after that we hosted stoke in a 3.0 win with the scorers being Whelan and a brace from Mc Dermott.  What was special about that day was Whelan made his debut and scored ?.

Everything correct ....the only thing missing is ..what was unusual , was the game was a Friday evening because the grand national was on the Saturday....back in the days when Saturday 3.00 was kick off time

Really tough that one.  Thought it was one of the European games for a bit but couldn't find anything about them that stood out ,Didn't know the national thing either.
Enjoyed the trip down memory lane all the same. Bruce Grobbellar was a former soldier  :Oo:

Out of curiosity SS who is the lads in the photo?.
