Looks like we've beat the likes of City and Arsenal to get this lad from Charlton.
Signing next week apparently.

Yaba dabba doo...

Lets play 'How Many Mediocre Players Can You Sign in One Window' !
The Liverpool Edition; Season 4

Its quite simple really. People talk about us traditionally going for the players who arent household names. Bar Torres and to some extent Suarez who were both highly sought after from the biggest clubs around (and funny enough probably our best 2 signings of the past decade or so). My question is, why do we say it like it has worked wonders for us ? We haven't won the league in forever and the more we persist with it the deeper we plunge.

As far as I;m concerned, signing players from smaller clubs has an added risk to it. The players not only need to adjust to playing at a higher level, they also need to develop that winning mentality that separates the top sides from the teams in the bracket below.

Looking at BR's signings, I can honestly say that only 3 out of the 23-25 players he has signed are good enough to start for us. That's Sakho, Coutinho and Sturridge. Signed for a total of 38mill. Considering we spent between 200-250mill during his time here, these numbers are a little embarrassing. Looking at these 3 players, they all came from top sides who were winning things while the players were there. Sakho was captain of PSG after they went out and bought some of the best in the world. Coutinho was getting games in an Inter side that was dominating Italy and winning the CL under Mourinho, and Sturridge (the relative unknown we signed according to some) had started 40 games (28 league started, 47 appearances in all comps scoring 11 playing mostly down the flank) the prior season in a CL winning Chelsea side.

Point is, the signing we are making are a much bigger risk than going out and spending a few extra mill to get players from top sides around the continent.

Which sort of top players are you talking about though ?

Last summer we were going for Sanchez - offering good money etc but still decided to go to Arsenal

London or massive wages is a big draw for a lot of the top European players

There are a lot of very talented players that aren't as well known as the highlight players - but highlight players will be players that right now we would struggle to compete - if it's a top European player then the top clubs with CL and money are going to be in for that player and location is a big thing right now for the players - London , Barcelona , Madrid , Paris and Munich are big draws for foreign players

We need to be realistic - we can't give out the wages some clubs do , we can't offer the location some can , we can't offer CL ( even when we did we struggled to attract players )

We need to look at the Coutinhos and the Sturridges and the players who are looking to break through into the Top level. And there are lots of very good players around.

Players like Kovacic , Lacazette and Aubegeymang are exactly those players who will improve our squad.

Sure, Torres was the only transfer that went through but look at the big picture(if you can).
1st of all how many star players have we even gone for from the top 4?

Answer, none, not even close never even looked at or approached cause it's futile.
On the other hand, Suarez was chased by Arsenal the whole summer and only cause the owners finally put the foot down did we manage to hold onto him for 1 more season.
But have you forgotten the letter he sent out to the media???
Which star player from the top 4 clubs would do such a thing?
Answer, none, would never happen.
And now Sterling seems to be the next one. Our most coveted asset, a star player, being courted this summer and probably bought in the end.
And this is just the beginning as this will picking up pace as soon as we get a decent layer in the future.
When will the opposite happen??
I can't really see us courting Hazard, SIlva etc.
Wake up ffs, yakka is in the right and you seem completely deluded!

Firstly we took Sturridge from Chelsea. Paid a lot less then they did for Torres and Sturridge has a better return for us then Torres did for Chelsea. Sturridge is younger as well

We are discussing teams taking our better players and my point was none of the current top 4 have taken any of our good players since i can remember even Torres was having a poor poor season when he left.

But please... Sturridge? A chelsea and City reject who alot of people had given up on pinballing to loans to Bolton and stuff.
It's not about what was a better return in the end, it's what was Sturrifge to Chelsea and what was Torres to us!!
And once again you are missing the big picture.
You don't see a huge difference if for example Chelsea courts Coutinho the whole summer, makes bids and where the player sends in a letter explaining why he has to leave for Chelski.
Or if Arsenal and City for example comes in for Sterling, courts him, makes bids for him etc. hence they are actively chasing our top performers/best players seeing as there is a good chance they might snap them up.
And then for example if Chelski and City have a players who is sitting on their bench playing some sub min or out on a loan and we come in with a bid for them.

And then states the excuse, that.. ehhhhh at least the deal for our star player was off in the 11th hour. Completely missing the point altogether....

LIVERPOOL will look to solve their right-back problem this week by increasing their bid for Nathaniel Clyne and completing a deal for Joe Gomez.

The Reds have a big void in defence to fill after the release of England international Glen Johnson last week.

They have already had one offer turned down by Southampton for Clyne but will return with a bid of around £12million – although Saints are holding out for £15m.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is also closing in on Charlton youngster Gomez, 18, and expects to complete a £3.5m deal – with significant add-ons that could take it beyond £5m – this week.

The England Under-19 defender is seen ultimately as a centre-half, but he played most of last season for Charlton at right-back.

Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko has rejected the chance to join Liverpool as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Raheem Sterling.

City are expected to make a renewed offer for the England forward after having a £30m offer rejected by the Anfield club last week.

They hoped to include Dzeko, 29, as part of the package but the Bosnian striker is not keen on a move to Merseyside.

We are well and truly fooked. The standard of player's who will sign for us are the likes of Ings and Austin FFS

To be fair mate this Gomez lad is quite highly rated and has been compared to a young Rio Ferdinand (hence the interest from the likes of City and Arsenal) but you are right in the sense that signing 18 year old CB's is not going to improve us in the short term.
No matter how good he is I can't see him being a regular in the starting XI for at least 3 years, that's at the very least.

Nathaniel Clyne and Brazilian Roberto Firmino linked.

I suspect we will get Clyne too if we shape unless Man United turn attentions to him and whilst its another player from
Southampton I do think he's a good  player.

Well, not only that, when he turns out a world beater at 22-23, the top four clubs will be like hyenas snapping him up.

I put up a list earlier in the thread of the caliber of player we should be going after:

-Dani Alvez
-Pedro
-Higuain
-Lavezzi
-Lucas Moura
-Hamsik
-Wanyama
-Jovetic
-Gundogan
-Khedira
-Falcao
-Lacazette
-Fekir
-Aubameyang
-Walcott
-Icardi
-J.Martinez

Obviously, some of the names on the list have since re-signed with their clubs or have already agreed moves. I dont buy into the mindset of us no longer being able to compete with the sides above us for THIS BRACKET of players. The likes of Reus, Pogba, Cavani, etc. will move to the top clubs but we can realistically expect the club to be able to put up decent offers to the likes of Jovetic, J.Martinez & Aubameyang who are all much better than the Ings and Austins we've been linked to. I agree with your list of player, now watch us target Jay Rodrigues and Saido Berahino instead.
