Arsenal are bringing in the sort of players we should be targeting. As things stand, Chelsea (3rd) have improved drastically. Arsenal (4th) have improved drastically. ManUtd (7th) have improved significantly. Heck, even City who had/have the best squad and won the league have improved their squad.

We have SPENT 40mill bringing in players WHO WOULD NOT MAKE THE STARTING 11 as things stand. On top of that, we are about to sell our (and the league's) best player. To say that I'm dissapointed with how things are going would be an understatement. As far as I'm concerned, this should have been the window where we go out and spend the money on 2 or 3 top players who are good enough to walk straight into the starting 11(what all the other sides around us are doing; Fabregas, Costa, Shaw, Herrera, Sanchez, etc.) instead of spending 40 fcking mill bringing in B- players to replace C+ players.

I know there's still time to fix things but I find it fascinating that a side that came so close to winning the title would go out in the summer window, spend big money, and end up with a weaker starting 11. That is the bottom line and any talk about the SQUAD being better is nonsense. We didnt come close to winning the title because we had a good squad. We almost won it because our starting 11 -led by Suarez- were fantastic. Arsenal, Utd, Chelsea, Tottenham all had better squads than we did and that didnt get them anywhere.

I always judge our work in the transfer window after it closes but got to admit, I do get a tad worried when I read stories of us bidding £20m for someone like Lovren. I am fine with the Lambert and Can signings as they are low risk signings and can see why they make sense. Lallana is a very good player even though I think we overpaid.

The key is how we go about things if, or when as it now seems, Suarez leaves. What top quality players are attainable. Looks like Sanchez is on his way to Arsenal.

In terms of attacking midfielders, not particularly excited by Shaqiri. Markovic has huge potential but at the moment I don't think he is a marquee kind of signing that would come in and hit the ground running but I may be wrong. Still one I'd like though. Can't see us realistically signing someone like James Rodriguez as he looks like he may end up at Madrid. Could we sign Di Maria from Real if they get rid of him to make space for Rodriguez? Could Tello or Pedro be options? Maybe Pastore at PSG?

Looking at the strikers we could realistically get, Balotelli is seriously talented but I don't think I could put up with the half arsed displays, even more so after being used to seeing Suarez running around for the whole 90 mins. Maybe Jackson Martinez from Porto? Would Benzema be realistic if real get Falcao? Origi would obviously be one for the future

I still can't believe we've offered £20m for Lovren, then again when I think of the likes of Cissokho, Aspas, Alberto, Moses and Borini yes I can believe it.
Unfortunately.

Liverpool FC have offered Southampton £20million for Dejan Lovren - but are being frustrated in their attempts to wrap up a deal for the centre-back.

The Croatia international is Brendan Rodgers' No 1 defensive target and he is desperate to join former Saints clubmates Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana at Anfield.

Lovren, who has handed in a transfer request, believes he had a gentleman's agreement with the South Coast outfit that he could leave this summer if a club paid £20million for his services.

However, despite Liverpool matching that amount, Southampton are refusing to do business and are holding out for a higher fee.

Lovren has been left fuming by what he sees as Saints reneging on a promise and is ready to go on strike in order to force through his dream move.

The 24-year-old is currently on holiday following Croatia's elimination from the World Cup in Brazil.

He is due back for pre-season training on July 21 but is prepared to stay away in protest - despite being warned by Southampton that he faces being heavily fined.

Lovren wants to play Champions League football for Liverpool next season and Rodgers is a big admirer of his talents.

The Reds boss believes his leadership qualities would help to shore up a backline which leaked 50 Premier League goals last term.

Lovren is just 13 months into the four-year deal he signed when he joined Southampton for £8.5million from Lyon last June.

He enjoyed an outstanding campaign for Saints and scored the winner when he faced the Reds at Anfield.

As well as Lovren, Rodgers still wants to reinforce his defensive options with a top class left-back.

Sevilla have claimed that Alberto Moreno is staying put after Liverpool refused to meet their £20million valuation.

However, the Reds haven't given up on their pursuit of the Spain international and could yet restart negotiations over the coming weeks in the hope an agreement can be reached.

Pepe Reina's agent says the goalkeeper will return to Liverpool FC for pre-season training later this month.

The Spanish shot-stopper spent last season on loan at Napoli and faces an uncertain future.

The Reds are looking to find a buyer for Reina, who still has two years to run on his lucrative contract.

Most of Brendan Rodgers’ squad will report back to Melwood next Monday but Reina and all the club’s other internationals who were on World Cup duty have been granted extra time off.

“I’m aware of the rumours circulating regarding the future of Reina, but I can confirm that Pepe will play at Liverpool next season,” said his agent Manuel Garcia Quilon.

“Is a return to Napoli completely ruled out? Yes, Reina will respect his contract with the English club.”

Liverpool will renew their interest in Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen if the club's move for Southampton defender Dejan Lovren fails.

Brendan Rodgers had reportedly earmarked Spurs' Belgium defender at the start of the summer, but would need to bid in excess of £15million to prise him from White Hart Lane.

Southampton will be reluctant to lose Lovren after already seeing three of their star players - Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert - leave St Mary's this summer, so the Reds may have to switch their attentions to the Belgium international.

Vertonghen has said at this World Cup that he is happy in north London but previously claimed he wanted to move on to a club where there was Champions League football, so he might be persuaded to leave.

Meanwhile, Liverpool could battle Arsenal for the signing of Schalke's £10million-rated Netherlands striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Can you imagine what it would be like to deal with Levy when he knows we have a stash of cash from the Suarez sale? If Southampton want £20m for Lovren, Levy will probably ask for £30m for Vertonghen. Huntelaar always seems to score scores wherever he goes. More of a in the box kind of striker and getting onto the end of things

DUTCH striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar wants to speak to Schalke before deciding on a possible move to Liverpool.

Huntelaar has just one year remaining on his current contract and Schalke could be forced to sell unless agreement over new terms can be reached.

But the 30-year-old says he is still negotiating with Schalke about an extension, and wants to see how those talks progress before deciding on a move.

He told De Telegraaf: "Regarding the rumours about Liverpool, it would only be fair to speak to Schalke first.

"I've talked with Schalke about an extension for a while. After the World Cup I am having a holiday. Then I will speak to them again.

"I'm not talking with my agent about the interest from clubs right now. I'm fully focused on the tournament."

It now remains to be seen how the talks with Schalke progress and whether Liverpool step up their interest again should negotiations stall.

After finishing second I really thought we would aim high this summer and bring in some top players, we fell at the last fence in the title race because we just didn't have enough match winners and I really thought we'd address that this time around especially with Rodgers saying he was prioritizing quality not quantity.
But we are on the verge of spending £50m on 3 players from a club that finished 6 places below us, what's more in my eyes  not one of them is a cast iron guaranteed starter, Lambert wont be picked ahead of Sturridge, Lovren is no better than Agger/Skrtel/Sakho and will have his hands full trying to make himself a regular and Lalana is a decent player but with the likes of Coutinho, Sterling and probably Markovic/Shaqiri to contend with he'll have a job on himself to make himself a fixture in the side.
For the price of those 3 we could have put in a bid for James Rodriguez or Falcao or someone who would have walked into the side and made a shirt his own.
Rodgers has been the best thing to happen to this club in years but we do have a habit of frittering away good money under him, the last 2 summers we have spent near £60m and all we really have to show for it in the first 11 is a keeper and CB (Sakho) who is in and out of the side.

There's actual quotes there so we must be interested in him.
Stinks of a panic buy to me, we've bought Lambert as a back up to Sturridge and now we are looking at another 30 something striker who will probably spend most of the season on the bench.

Sky sources understand Southampton have rejected an £18million offer from Liverpool for Dejan Lovren.

The Croatia international is reportedly keen to link up with former team-mates Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, who have both left St Mary's for Anfield this summer.

But Southampton are refusing to do business and are holding out for a £25m fee for a player who joined them for £8.5m from Lyon last June.

The 24-year-old, who is currently on holiday following Croatia’s World Cup elimination, scored in Southampton's 1-0 win at Anfield last September.

Liverpool have spent around £35m this summer on Lambert, Lallana and Emre Can, while negotiations are continuing with Barcelona over a possible deal for Luis Suarez.

Totally agree, the doom and gloom merchants on here are doing my head in, FFA the window has only just opened, we have made a couple of astute signings and are being linked all types of players at the moment as we are every window, even more so with the potential Suarez money. Let's see what happens and who we actually sign before you start predicting armegedon.
