Lots of reports before the weekend claiming Anzhi had accepted our bid. Then more reports came out saying Anzhi had accepted both ours and spurs bids and it was down to the player to decide.

Now it seems the player prefers Spurs (possible due to AVB being after him previously?)

By all accounts, from the little we know of such tranfer dealings, and the supposed "ITK"'s on twitter, I believe we've done all that we can in trying to secure the player.

If he chooses another team over us, there's nothing more we could have done.

Players turning us down it seems is happening too often these days - why do we seem uncapable of closing out transfers at the moment when we are in competition with other clubs - and its not like we are fighting teams like Chelsea or City or the Mancs for players. Players turning us down for teams like Spurs never used to happen - now its happening more often and its worrying. I have my obvious reservations about Ayre - he has a track record of royally f*cking things up. Is the pull of our club that diminshed at the moment. Also i do worry that BR also doesnt have the pull to get the better players - but thats down to not being a name in Europe because he is unknown in Europe ( because he is very new at the top level ).

They're on steroids.

More news coming out of Italy, with Roma's director of football Walter Sabatini reported to have flown into London this morning. Tottenham and Arsenal have been linked with Roma forward Erik Lamela, with Spurs said to be closing in on the highly-rated Argentina international.

Could be different in each case.

This summer we’ve tried for 3 marquee signings and lost all 3.

Mktariyan – Opted to go to champions league finalists

Costa – Opted to stay at Atletico who are in Champions league on improved contract

Willian (though not concluded yet) – AVB has been after him for years which could be a deal breaker with neither us nor spurs in CL – plus spurs are in A European competition (and by-all-accounts are more likely to get 4th above us if neither team had Willian) and also one aspect we don’t think about so much is that London is a big draw for foreign players.

That said it’s still a big worry. What more can Rogers do – what more can the owners do in each case here?
I know a month ago, Benny mentioned the term ambition – in relation to our owners needing to spend big. It’s true we need more than one marquee signing, but at least they are stumping up the cash each time and showing that ambition.

Do we need a DoF (who’s not Ayre) to get the job done quicker? – Would that have made any difference to any of the above?  (possibly is Willians case, but still not definite as AVB could bid as soon as our bid accepted and turn his head to them regardless)

We always knew it would be hard to attract top class players with no European football – and now we are finding out just how hard it is!

Breaking news: Bale to #RealMadrid is imminent. (Spanish media)

.... And that how they fund it all.

Paulinho, Soldado, Willian in -  Bale out.

And again, net transfer spend in the minus figures.

Also rumoured to add Lamela to replace Bale - that would massively improve their squad overall

All valid questions mate, I have no idea.

All I do know is, and I'm sorry to say, as a team we are paying for our poor showings in the league since 2008/09

Most of what the owners could have done should have been done last summer - they made a choice to go down one path - a path that hasn't ever worked in the prem if you want CL football.

Liverpool are poised to win the race for highly rated Derby midfielder Will Hughes with the club set to lodge a £6million bid this week.

Hughes is considered one of the best prospects in England, and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to bring him to Anfield this summer.

Arsenal, Chelsea and even Manchester United have all been linked with the 18-year-old, who has already racked up nearly 50 first-team appearances.

But it is Liverpool who lead the race, with Rodgers ready to bid after sending chief scout Dave Fallows to check on Hughes during England U21s win over Scotland last week.

The elegant midfielder impressed in that match, and the talk on Merseyside is that a £6million bid will go in within days.

Derby have always maintained that they want to keep the player, but manager Nigel Clough confessed over the weekend that he might go if the price is right.

"There is interest but at the moment nothing is happening with Will," said Clough.

"But at the end of the transfer window anything can happen."

Hughes still has three years left on his contract at Pride Park after penning an extension last summer.

That was last summer though.

We are where we are. Rodgers and all.

What can we do now, this window - or next window? DoF time?

Yes definitely a DoF - bin Ayre back to sort out commercial income and bring in a Football Oriented DoF. That is must IMO

Spurs are clearly spending the proceeds of a due to complete Bale transfer.

They are reinvesting money coming in, not new investment. Exactly like our strategy, we just don't have the luxury of a £85M transfer coming in. Besides I think Spurs, if they had the choice, would have kept Bale over reinvesting the funds.
