Liverpool inch closer to Henrikh Mkhitaryan after 'agreeing £25m fee' with Shakhtar

LIVERPOOL are on the cusp of signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan after agreeing a £25m fee with Shakhtar for the player.

The Armenian playmaker has been sounded for a move to Anfield in the past few weeks, as the Reds brace themselves for Luis Suarez's seemingly inevitable departure.

He has also been on Borussia Dortmund's radar, and has been made available for sale after he failed to report for pre-season training.

His manager Mircea Lucescu urged the 24-year-old to snub Liverpool, telling Ukranian publication Terrikon: ""I can understand the urge to leave if he has a chance to go to a club that surpasses Shakhtar, like Barcelona or Real Madrid, but not many clubs are beyond our level - not clubs like Liverpool or Tottenham."

But it seems Liverpool have made a significant breakthrough, with a report in Russian paper Sport Express saying Liverpool will make an official statement in the next few days.

They also note he will fly to Liverpool to undergo a medical and join up with his new team-mates.

Meanwhile, Kolo Toure formally signed a two-year contract at Melwood training ground earlier today.

he Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder has offers on the table from both clubs and will make his final decision on where to move in the coming days, with the German club the favourites

By Wayne Veysey | Chief Correspondent

Borussia Dortmund are confident of beating Liverpool to the signature of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Goal understands.
The Champions League runners-up have made a concerted push for the Armenia international and have joined the Merseysiders in activating his £19 million release clause.

Both clubs have made contract offers to Mkhitaryan, whose move is being brokered by super agent Mino Raiola.

It is believed that the 24-year-old is now edging towards choosing Dortmund ahead of Liverpool, with his final destination expected to be confirmed in the next few days.

Tottenham have also registered their interest in the versatile midfielder but are regarded as outsiders in the three-way fight for the player's signature.

Liverpool had lined up Mkhitaryan as a priority signing even before Luis Suarez began pushing for a summer move, with the three-time Armenia player of the year regarded as the most eye-catching target in a summer rebuilding programme that has already included the signings of goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, defender Kolo Toure, attacking midfielder Luis Alberto and forward Iago Aspas.

But the deal has been a complicated one to complete for the Merseysiders because of legal issues concerning Mkhitaryan’s ownership and the timing of his transfer fee payments, with Shakhtar keen for a single lump sum up front.

Mkhitaryan has failed to attend training in recent days, with Shakhtar chief executive Sergei Palkin admitting he does not know his star man's whereabouts.

Dortmund have money to spend after selling Mario Gotze to Bayern Munich for £31.5m and Palkin has admitted the German club have bid for his team's prize asset.

Jurgen Klopp's side are also on the verge of signing St Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with sporting director Michael Zorc admitting on Tuesday that they are "very close" to finalising a deal.

Robert Lewandowski has been told he will not be allowed to leave for Bayern this summer, and BVB remain keen to strengthen a side that finished 25 points behind the Bavarians last season.

Mkhitaryan scored a Ukranian Premier League record 25 goals last season despite operating from an attacking midfield berth, while Aubameyang netted 19 times in Ligue 1.

It would be hard to disagree with his view when you look at the competition Shakter are currently in with regards CL but the Prem is a big lure for players.

The test will be if he does have a choice between us and Dortmund

I would also buy Ryan Shawcross,in case Mkhitaryan deal becomes another Carroll. Then go to town buy a red marker cross out Mkhita and you have a instant LFC player. Ryan don't know about you but would keep the kids happy

Wrong, many of FIFA's regulations are legally binding and gender differentiation is one that ensures the two professional codes are separated, and for very good reasons.

Simply put, a "good" lawyer wouldn't even bother contesting the rules.
exactly, the fact that it has already been tried and failed is proof enough of the stance FIFA would take.

And for what it's worth I agree. There is enough outrage when a male player receive a harsh challenge or gets hurt, imagine the uproar if the recipient was a woman. Football, technically, is not a contact sport but the reality is contact is made. Putting women into that environment is both dangerous and unfair.

A few rumours about Shelvey going to Swansea for £6m.

Seems to have gone quiet on the centre half front, really hope we buy a commanding defender soon.

Do you mean in the same ways that the PGA golf rules were legally binding yet were challenged to allow a female to compete ( successfully challenged )

Plenty of "legally binding" rules have been challenged in the past and been overturned.

And  plenty of rules haven't been overturned. SCS has already pointed this out to you where this discussion is concerned.

Golf is a lot different to football obviously, a one cap fits all policy where gender differentiation is concerned is simply a moronic view to hold.

Mind you, I wouldn't mind seeing Katie Price thrown in a ring with Mike Tyson - that'd be fair.

The futures of Martin Skrtel and Stewart Downing also remain uncertain, as does Reina's who is no longer Liverpool’s guaranteed first choice goalkeeper following Mignolet’s arrival.

Liverpool would accept bids for Reina having been prompted to move for Mignolet amid broad expectations at the end of last season a deal to take the Spanish keeper to Barcelona was in place.

Interest in Reina from the Nou Camp has since seemed to cool.
