He doesn't have "above average ability" at all. He's no different to Milner or Kuyt even, except that both have WAY more determination than him.

Like I said though, he had a good game yesterday. I know (myself included) that once a player annoys the f.uck out of you for so long, you can never see any good he does - see Thommo's posts for that.

What exactly do you mean by “good game”? He provided good cover for the right back but didn’t do nearly enough in terms of trying to create or score goals. It was yet another 5/6 out of ten performance.

i thought downing did well, i know he`s not exactly john barnes or peter thompson but on the other hand he`s not one of those frustrating wide players that lose the ball every single time they recieve it either.
he doesnt go down blind alleys or get boxed in and he keeps moves alive.

Youre wrong
I do see good things he does, but they are rare and inconsistent, which is my problem with him. If he had passion and heart he would do these good things more often.
Then I would be wrong...

i know there were some magnificent performances today (most notably from suarez and sturridge) but i want to mention this fella`s contribution.
he had a fine game this afternoon too and what`s more he`s been playing well for months.
he has shown a fair bit of character to turn around his liverpool career because he wasnt a crowd favourite by any means but now he is one of our most consistent performers.
i hope he doesnt leave at the end of the season.

He's been playing really well along with hendo past few months. Credit to him.

I have to say Rodgers deserves credit here too as he's managed to get hendo,  downing and Enrique looking like the players we thought we were getting.

I still think downing might be replaced in the summer but even if he does Rodgers has added value to him.

Yep Downing is having a good spell of football ,has ton of talent and can reach much higher. Should be shooting at goal at least 4-5 times a game has a killer kick.

I've never been slow to slate Downing but have to agree with the above.

I still think he's playing well within himself but his recent performances have been a definite improvement on his previous offerings.

I would say hes probably playing at about 25-30% of his capability.
Thats what annoys me, not that he hasnt got talent but he never gives 100%
