Liverpool submitted an improved bid of about £8 million for Philippe Coutinho last night and are confident of signing the Inter Milan attacking
midfielder, despite offering less than Southampton.
The South Coast club are willing to pay about £10 million, but Coutinho’s preference is to move to Anfield.Ian Ayre, the Liverpool managing

Liverpool FC increase offer for Inter Milan's Philippe Coutinho

LIVERPOOL have increased their offer for Philippe Coutinho to 9million Euros (£7.6million) as they look to wrap up a deal for the Inter Milan attacking midfielder.

The Reds have been locked in negotiations with the Serie A outfit since their initial bid of 6million Euros (£5million) was rejected last week.

Despite talks having dragged on, Liverpool remain confident that an agreement will be reached and they will finally secure the services of the 20-year-old Brazil international.

However, reports that managing director Ian Ayre flew to Italy yesterday to try to complete the transfer are untrue.

Coutinho, who has been hampered by a minor injury recently, was left out of the Inter squad for last night's Coppa Italia semi-final first leg against Roma as discussions over his future continue.

Talks will resume today and Liverpool are unconcerned about the prospect of interest from Southampton driving up the price as the player favours a move to Anfield.

Boss Brendan Rodgers hopes the exciting youngster, who can play in central midfield, out wide or in the No 10 role as a second striker, will become his second signing of the January transfer window following the arrival of Daniel Sturridge.

Coutinho signed for Inter from Vasco da Gama for 4million Euros when he was just 16 but remained in Brazil for a further two years before moving to Italy in 2010.

He enjoyed a successful spell on loan at Espanyol last season but since returning to Inter his chances have been limited. He has started just three Serie A matches this season and has made 10 league appearances in total.

Sky Sports understands that Bolton Wanderers winger Chung-yong Lee may well be the subject of a formal offer from at least one Premier League club before the transfer window closes.

Chung-yong is back to fitness for Bolton this season after being restricted to just two appearances last term due to a broken leg.

The South Korean had been one of Bolton's most consistent performers after arriving at the Reebok Stadium in 2009 and he has regularly been linked with other clubs.

It is understood that manager Dougie Freedman's resolve to keep the 24-year-old could be tested before next Thursday's transfer deadline.

Liverpool and Stoke City have long been mooted as admirers of Chung-yong and the Premier League duo retain an interest in the wide-man.

And there is every expectation that one of those clubs will make a bid for Chung-yong in the final week of the January window.

this club is in decline big time, here we are battling for superstar players with the likes of south fooking hampton and stoke :help

while the likes of barca and manure are circling our best players.
this coutinho is so good and such a great prospect that we are battling the mighty southampton for him. if he was so good he would be linked with bigger clubs than this but he isnt. we are a joke in transfer dealings and some how think we can offer 6mil for a player when inter want ten, then we increase to 8 and despite them accepting another bid for 10.2 we are confident we will get him :laugh:

as a club we are not being led down a path to mediocrity but rather, dragged down it kicking and screaming by incompetent owners and a numpty M.D.

Hold on there mate. It's not like we're after some must-buy player that would turn things around for us. We're after a gamble, and that's exactly how we're treating him, like a gamble.
When we were after Allen, Brendan wanted him and no one else. We did everything that was necessary to bring him here and even payed over the odds for him. Now we're dealing with a kid that's not a must-buy player. It also wouldn't be unlikely if the out of favor Inter player fails with us. That's why the club is very careful with Countinho and doesn't want to spend money unnecessarily. They've done terrible mistakes with Carroll, Henderson, Downing etc. so I don't think they want the same thing to happen again.

Mate - We have been in decline ever since Hicks and Gillette owned us. These owners, FSG are doing it the right way. You dont go into massive debt to try and climb the table.

We are slowly becoming financially stable, do you really want to risk that stability?

Next year we will have extra money from the new TV deal so we should be able to have a good transfer window in the Summer. January is never a good time to be spending a lot of money as you nearly always end up spending a lot more on players that they are worth as all the real diamonds and not going to be allowed to leave their current clubs half way through a season.

Mate - We have been in decline ever since Hicks and Gillette owned us. These owners, FSG are doing it the right way. You dont go into massive debt to try and climb the table.

We are slowly becoming financially stable, do you really want to risk that stability?

Next year we will have extra money from the new TV deal so we should be able to have a good transfer window in the Summer. Exactly, for some reason red thinks we are still a CL thoroughbred who an attract Europe's top talent.

seems couthino has told inter he will only move to liverpool and if
a deal cannot be struck with us he will stay with them.

looks like an open goal unless a new club enters the bidding, or we
go in too cheap and upset inter or the player and they pull the plug
on negotiations.

im not denying that we werent in a bad financial situation under h&g but they are long gone and so is the bulk of our debt. if our owners were footing the cost of a new stadium or a refit of anfield i would understand why we are trying to do things on the cheap but they arent. we have mega deals with warrior and standard that rivals any of the big clubs deals so its not like we are not making money.
we are the 7th most valuable football brand in the world ahead of other giants like inter,ac,juve,ajax,city etc. we are also the eight richest football club in the world with an operating income of $45 million.thats profit from april 2012 even after the mega spending on carroll,hendo,downing etc. our standings have increased under fenway and our outgoings have been slashed considerably and continue to be.
we have never been more stable and those figures prove it.
im not saying we should go out and pay over the odds for players but surely 10mil for a top prospect that the manager wants is achievable. this business of offering trials and whatever valuation they feel like for players will never bring success and thats my biggest gripe.
what they are currently doing is not befitting of a club like liverpool.
you have to speculate to accumulate and again we find ourselves with an outside chance of making the top 4 but they wont speculate and if the manager feels that it will only take 20 million to achieve that then he should be backed especially seen as that investment will make a quick return and more if he makes 4th.
get 4th and you keep your best players but if we fail to do that then we face a summer of uncertainty, fail to achieve 4th next season then we are looking at a complete rebuild again and so begins the vicous circle.
that money from the tv deal is guranteed so id hope we will see a better level of spending than last summer but i wouldnt hold my breath. anyway when was the last time this club was linked with any real diamonds.
oh yeah its coutinho but man we couldnt pay that extortinate fee now could we

no scs, i believe that our club is one of the biggest in the world and should be behaving like one. if you believe having a high ambition is cloud cuckoo land then thats your perogative and i hope you excuse me for not believing the same.
what player in the world doesnt know who liverpool football club is. granted we would struggle to attract the likes of ronaldo,messi,xavi,rvp,aguero etc but thats because we wont pay the wages.
if you really think that all the top talent only play for the big clubs then more fool you. players will play for a club with ambition im not saying we pay every player 200+ a week but we are on a mission to rid ourselves of anyone even close to half that.
southampton obviously believe that this coutinho lad is worth 10million and will help them stay in the league never mind cl so why is it cloud cuckoo land to expect us to pay the same and maybe reach the top 4 this year.
lets face it though 10mil is hardly an extortinate fee now is it and surely you know what happens when you pay peanuts.

We are a club with a big legacy. I'm not saying we are small but we are clearly not big enough to attract Europe's elite. The vast majority of top players will only join clubs who participate in the CL.

As we do not, I do not expect our ability to attract Europe's top talent to increase any time soon.

maybe thats where we differ as fans then.
i believe that players will sign for a club that shows ambition to make the cl and thats where we are failing. we are showing no ambition by going around preaching poverty, offering international footballers trials :laugh:

and trying to get players below their clubs valuations. what kind of message is that sending out to the players already here?.
i really hope you dont think we need to attract europes elite just to catch up on the mighty european stalwart that is spurs with their outrageous un-catchable 7 point lead with half a season left.
its been spouted on here enough that coutinho is in fact one of europes top talents and we can sign him if we meet his clubs valuation of him so that logic of yours is total c'rap.
they have appointed a manager and given him a big task without the money to back it up and i dont think he is being unrealistic asking them to sign a player in this day and age for ten million quid which isnt going to bankrupt us now is it.
