A COMPLETE waste of money and terrible return on investment - there's no way to justify him staying past January, we can't afford to be romantic, we have to look at the numbers.

have to agree....if a club came in the next few weeks with a 10 mill offer then i'd snap their arm off.  Poor player who shouldn't be anywhere near Anfield

You also wanted to get rid of Suarez after the Evra debacle and regarded him as an embarrassment to the club

Downing currently looks significantly better than a £10m player and I never thought I would say this but let's just see out the season and see how he does with better players around him. He is a key reason why we are winning at the moment.

You're right, it was a 'debacle',  instead of selling Suarez we fired Kenny and Clarke.

I don't understand peoples reluctance to accept the financial aspect of buying and selling footballers. If you bought a car to drive you to London and back every day you'd sell it after a week if it only got as far as Sandbach before breaking down on the first few days. You wouldn't hold onto it hoping that one day it'll defy the odds and make it to its destination would you?

Downing is not performing the purpose we bought him for.  Is that a fact, or not a fact?

It is not always practical to sell the car. Sometimes you have to find out what the problem is and fix it.

Not when you've paid top whack like we did for Downing, he wasn't a discounted bargain!

I had a 200 quid Vauxhall Viva once, I had the chance to study so many motorway hard shoulders I could have written a book on them!

With our thin squad I don't think we should be selling Downing this month.  Unless a better player is lined up and the funds are needed.

I had a 1976 P reg MkII Escort that cost about 200 smackers, 'burnt gold' colour though it came out of the factory green. I was doing a steady 60 in the middle lane one day when the engine just suddenly died when alongside a truck in the slow lane. That was fun as well.     Feck me, they nearly banned me from the motorways when I was a lad!

It sounds like you're a bit of an old woman behind the wheel reg, with your luck and cars.

I did drive a s.hitty horrible old Citroen work van, I used to fly down the M1 and bits and pieces of it used to fall off, like the plastic trims down either side. I drove this French piece of sh.it on another day through some suburb, when I heard this almighty clunk. I drove on about 100 meters only to see the whole of the exhaust system lying in the middle of the road behind me. Fecking ugly piece of s.hit it was, weeks later I wrote the thing off driving through Epping forest, best thing I ever did with that.

Forty years ago I had a Simca 100 and I guess my tainted opinion of the French goes way back to that period. The car eventually caught fire. Fortunately nobody was hurt but to be frank cremation was too good for such a diabolical piece of French engineering - what a bunch of inept fkrs !!

To think that this is Downing's thread perhaps says it all !!  :D

I agree with reg that we need to look at the numbers but he is looking at the wrong ones. You should never make decisions about a player's worth based on what you originally paid for him. That money has been spent, it is meaningless.

The question is are his performances worth what he is costing us now, in wages? Also, what would it cost to replace him versus what we could get if we sold him? Personally I doubt we would get enough for him to be worth it (10 million? Who are we going to replace him with for that money?), and with the improvement in his performances I'd happily keep him around till the summer at least.

At the risk of sounding like a Downing fanboy, which I'm sure none of us are, players and cars aren't exactly the same. Training, man management and changes in personal circumstances and motivation tend to have a much bigger impact on the performance of players than of cars, even French ones.

i dont see the point in shipping him out now in january, for a start we havent got the biggest squad anyway so i dont see the point in weakening it further and to be fair to downing his recent performances have been good.
i think the best idea would be to keep him here until the end of the season and re-assess the situation then.
he wouldnt be the first player to have a slow start at a club but eventually come good.
