1. A cash injection to boost the squad, placate the fans and create a feel good factor.
2. To quantify the financial damage done to the club by H&G and restructure the finances to get us on an even keel.
3. To bring in as many new sponsers as possible to raise revenue.
4. To provide a financially sustainable solution to the stadium issue.
Looking at those one by one:
1. Hodgson was give wedge and brought in a 'useless bunch'. Kenny wasted a massive sum on very average players. We owners provided the funds and kept their part of the deal but were let down by local management - the fact that Hodgson, Comolli, Kenny and Steve Clark have all left demonstrates their failure to achieve what was expected of them.
2. Balancing the books has been more difficult as I'm sure after H&G left, further scams were uncovered, I don't think the 60 million spent on a new stadium drawing was the only effort to milk the club. High priced players were unsellable and high wage players weren't prepared to break their contracts - hence Cole at 30 years old is on a massive contract, Aquilani has gone effectively for nothing and the likes of Carragher remain despite being past their sell by dates. If Skittle and Agger want to leave its probably because their wages are seriously below what our clubs are paying and not really becuase they've lost confidence in the club.
3. Commercial: Sponsership has been only partially successful as the Standard Chartered contract for example is linked to success. Needless to say we got the base value last year and probably no bonus from failing to qualify for CL and not winning the FA cup etc.. However undoubtedly the club has become more successful in attracting sponsers - Warrior and Jack Wolfskin are good examples.
4. The stadium has to be linked to the preceding 3 points. Only when a manager buys in successful players at economical prices to generate success and therefore revenue on the field, when commercially the books are balanced and we have a positive cashflow from competitions, commercial and a wider fan base (with resultant regional sponsership opportunities) with the potential to maximise the income from a larger capacity stadium can it go ahead.
The team must be self supporting -> transfers + wages covered from revenues earned on the field (league, cups, tv rights directly attributed).
Commercial must be set goals to pay for a % of club costs (academy, worldwide adverting/promotion, scouting etc..).
The stadium must be self supporting - naming rights, matchday revenues etc.. to pay for constructions and annual overheads.
When each of the three main parts of the club - team, commercial and stadium and performing as they should and covering their designated costs will the club be fully recovered from H&G, back on a level footing and then and only then can we start dreaming of buying in world class players.
The owners are doing what was expected of them on day 1, provide funds and turn our club back from the brink of bankruptcy. Lets applaud them for that.
