It's not in there, but anyway, I can understand him being non-committal about Andy's future. Once he issues a confirmation/denial, he then faces pressure to answer in respect of every other player who has question marks over their futures and that's not a helpful position to be in. I do still doubt whether he'd be non-committal in answering those questions if it was Suarez or Gerrard, Pepe or Lucas who was the subject of speculation. In fact, hasn't he already been very clear about where Suarez's future lies? While not wanting to read too much into these things, that could give us some indication of how he sees Carroll, and it might not be in that category of players he definitely wants to keep. Even if we did receive an offer I don't think we're in a strong enough position to let go of our only out-and-out striker. Borini alone won't do, so unless we plan on brining in another striker in addition to him, I can't see Andy leaving. I would much rather we just kept hold of him and see if he can buld on the improvements he's already made. He's a completely unique option to have in the squad if nothing else.

wouldnt surprise me if dempsey came in to do carroll`s job, or try to do it.

I am bemused why anyone would be ok about the prospect of losing Carroll, who is finally showing what a player he is and potentially bringing in an ageing average premiership player in Dempsey.

If that happens i will be gutted and fuming in equal measure.

Dempsey isn't the answer for Liverpool scoring 18 premiership goals for Fulham doesn't mean he would do the same at Liverpool and he's only done that in one season at Fulham. The guy is just a football journeyman who's reaching the end of his career maybe ok as backup in some games but not in terms of adding any great quality to the team.

That said in view of how our fortunes have regressed so much in the last three years it's where we are now in terms of attracting genuine talent. Carroll showed at the end of last season what he can when given a chance I'm disappointed that the new manager is even contemplating getting rid.

I'm also as unconvinced by his plan for 4-3-3 as I am by the future under him to be honest. I had high hopes when he was appointed but now I'm not so sure about him. He does need to realise that he's managing Liverpool now not Swansea and tinkering around with loans and the like is not the way forward. Is it the Liverpool way to go around telling the media that he's got a 'big signing' lined up and then at the press conference refuse to name who he's negotiating for?

It's still early days so I still want to give him a chance to get it right but there are a few things about him that worry me.

If Dempsey arrives it will have nothing do with Carroll staying or leaving. Dempsey can play wide as part of front 3, or wide and behind the striker in a 4-2-3-1. Carroll leads the line, Dempsey doesn’t.

I’m assuming there is a budget that Rogers is working with in regards to 3 or 4 players he wants to bring in so they can’t all be big buys. If Maxi wants to go back to Argentina then Dempsey would be a decent replacement, and command a much lower wage. He arrives in goal scoring position well from the wide areas and scores plenty of goals, and with both feet. He may not be as good as Maxi when it comes to build up play but he will provide a decent goal return and is superb in the air.

The prices quotes are way too high for a player who is 29 and in the last year of his contract but if we could get him for around 5 million as a replacement for someone like Maxi, Downing, Bellamy or Kuyt, it would be a decent bit of business.

That's a big IF, i never believe the papers but 7-10 million is the figure i am reading.
I hope not.

By the way i wouldnt say for one minute he could play wide in a decent side personally.

I’m bemused that people are already having a dig at Rodgers, calling him a “yes man” and what-not, despite the fact he hasn’t sold/bought any players or taken charge of any games. He hasn’t even confirmed which players may be bought/sold. As far as I am aware there isn’t even a source to the Carroll loan story.

He has only been in the job a few weeks. People seem quite happy to stick the boot in based solely on media speculation. Give him the benefit of the doubt for god sake.

Depends what you mean by decent and do you think the wide players we have now are more than decent? If I was trying to build a side to get ahead of Spurs and Arsenal and in the top 4 I wouldn’t want Dempsey in the first team but would be happy with him in the squad. I would certainly prefer him to Downing on left.

if dempsey arrives here mate rodgers will look like a yes man.
if carroll goes then he has to be replaced with a similar big name striker. if this signing thats going to `knock us off our feet` turns out to be a winger or a midfielder and the plan is to replace carroll with borini and dempsey then this club is f**ked.
i wouldnt mind but when you think of some of the disinterested performances some of our players put in last season (and i`m not just talking about the likes of downing here, even gerrard had his moments, that game away at old trafford after the handshake thing, he may as well have not bothered turning up, he did absolutely nothing! he didnt even run around a bit) and rodgers manages to (at the very least) unsettle one of the few players in the squad that showed any sort fight and heart! it`s unbelievable.
rodgers is not impressing me early doors to be honest, our tranfer targets all seem to have played for either chelsea`s youth team or swansea and he spends half his time eulogising about carragher and gerrard, he`s supposed to be the f**king manager not their best mate and truth be told as great as they have been (and i mean great, especially gerrard) their era is coming to an end it`s the likes of suarez and carroll he should be trying to win over, they are the future of the club.
in a way i hope carroll goes on loan because if he has unsettled the lad for nothing and has manged to get carroll`s name splashed across the back of every newspaper in the country and have his future discussed on every radio program in the country because rodgers was missunderstood in a press conference then those fears about the job being too big for a rodgers or a martinez might be true.
you say something as swansea manager and no one gives a sh*te, you say something as liverpool manager and it`s huge headlines all over the place.
he cant be that incompetent, then again deciding to loan out one of our best players from last season and a player who looks like he`s developing into a collossus isnt exactly the work of a genius in my book.
rodgers is probably p*ssed off that carroll made his best mate JT look like a divvy

I wouldnt have him in a wide position at all.
He could JUST do a job as a back up striker for me, but wide ?

No chance, Downing is miles better despite last seasons struggles.

It looks like he wants to play Downing and Bellamy either side of Suarez in a 4-3-3. I can't see how that will move us on in all honesty. I was hoping that there would be improvement and expansion with 4-4-2. Bellamy can't play on the right he floats around the place Downing is best on the left it's not a system that will work with those three players up front in the way that Chelsea have got it to work in recent years.

I really thought we were going back to 4-4-2 pass and move controlled possession. The 4-3-3 Chelsea hoof most of the time on the counter is not the way forward for Liverpool. Chelsea's 70 points joint second with City and sixth with about 65 points last season is surely confirmation that 4-3-3 is not the way forward.

it looks like the club have caved in over media pressure on Carroll's price tag and decided they can't have these stories again during the course of another season.

If he can't fit into 4-3-3 or whatever tactical system Rodgers is going to impose why would he possibly be able to do that after a year in Italy of all places? The Italian game is even more negative and pedestrian than Liverpool were last season. The position on Carroll strikes me as one of fudge, indecision and playing a waiting game because they just don't know what to do with him.

I suspect that when Rodgers said he told Carroll what he thought in reality he's probably told him that he won't get many games and they''ll take an offer if it comes in.

I didn't get it anywhere it's my guess based on the available personnel. Henderson isn't a striker, Kuyt has gone, Sterling is too young, Maxi will probably go but wouldn't be ahead of those guys even if he stayed.

No sign of any right winger coming in then a player Liverpool desperately need to improve their creativity and complement Downing more. Another difficult season looks on the cards.
