Dear @OptaJoe, how many PL assists has Stewart Downing got this season? The 'two' against QPR surely weren't assists were they?

Duncan Alexander* ‏ @oilysailor
@username no - we didn't give them. He has zero for the season so far.

The decision to bring Carroll on and Downing off today left me perplexed a little. Yes, Downing is an average player but he gave us width and was whipping in some decent crosses I think Carroll would have thrived on. I don't think we should have brought on Bellamy to tell the truth.

Most shots in Europe's top 5 leagues this season without a goal: Downing 69, Dani Benitez 68, Jose Reyes 65, Wright-Phillips 54, Riise 50

All the others have assists as well

It's strange the season he's had given he always used to get at least 6 goals a season at Boro who were usually about 12th when he played there. It could have all been so different had his shot in the first game against Sunderland not hit the bar. He's a confidence player who needs to believe in himself more.

He came on against Fulham and ponced about like an overpaid prima donna contributing absolutely fk all. Unfortunately he seems to have lived up to a lot of people's lowly expectations.

He has to be sold.  Sterling, Bellamy, Kuyt and Maxi all do better jobs on the flanks.  And all of them together cost less than 20M.
If we sell him now we might get 10 - 12M  for him.

I am convinced that Downing would have been a strikers dream in any one of the top four teams ,because his crossing is behind the
defence and practically impossible to defend against ,and he does this in every game .

I would definitely keep Downing ,because if we get a proper poacher he will reap the dividends from Stewies crossing .

Stewart Downing does not think Liverpool's most recent recruits should shoulder all the blame for a frustratingly inconsistent season.

The former Aston Villa winger was among the players to move to Anfield last summer as more than £80million was spent on new players.

Liverpool were as a result expected to challenge for the Premier League title, but, despite winning the Carling Cup and reaching Saturday's FA Cup final, they have fallen well short.

Downing, along with the likes of Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam, has had to take the bulk of the scrutiny, however, the England international thinks it is a squad responsibility.

"We all still remember Di Matteo's goal so early, going off the bar - I've hated him ever since"
Stewart Downing Quotes of the week

"I've heard the criticism about the new signings, but it's someone's opinion. Others might take it hard, but it doesn't bother me," he said in the Daily Mirror.

"It's easy to look and think just because it's not gone well in the league it's the new players. But that happens at every club.
Revenge

"There are more than four or five players in a squad and we have all not done it, not just the new ones. It's as a team.

"Sometimes the new ones haven't played and we have lost games - it's just a building process, it takes time, it's not overnight.

"To win the Carling Cup in the first season and potentially the FA Cup as well would be a great start."

Meanwhile, Downing, who was the man of the match in the Carling Cup final as Liverpool defeated Cardiff on penalties, is out for revenge against Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

The boyhood Middlesbrough fan is still scarred by Roberto Di Matteo's goal in the opening seconds of the 1997 final and he wants payback on Chelsea's current interim first-team coach.

Downing said: "We all still remember Di Matteo's goal so early, going off the bar - I've hated him ever since."

Even though you don't want to take responsibility Stuart, you ARE one of the reasons we've been so poor in the league!

Again, our midfield IMO needs an overhaul, they collectively don't score enough goals to back up our GD and of course we need a goal poacher.

Downing, though has disappointed, although to be fair I never expected much of 'Mr Average' anyway - certainly Dalglish's buys are questionable. But I hope he puts it right in the summer and have every faith in him doing so.

Yeah, I don't like to pick on any one player, but as signings have gone, Stewart Downing is possibly our worst signing ever. He has been abysmal.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing Downing play today. He seems to perform a lot better in cup competitions, and he's been looking threatening in recent games as well. This is the perfect occasion for Downing to score his first goal, and make it the winning one too :buttrock
